Paris - Nice - Stage 3
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_03_PCM0141.jpg

The first GC stage today with a short uphill finish after a mainly flat stage.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png De Bie, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Sagan are easily the top puncheurs. No other is coming even close to them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_03_PCM0143.jpg

Similar picture in the break. Again a trio, again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Krasts, again Rabobank jut like on stage 1 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Den Berg. They are joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Kolev today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_03_PCM0147.jpg

Puma chasing is a bit surprising seeing their team here. Just 6 riders in total and no real top climber/puncheur. Their team is around time trialist pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Ganna as strongest rider for easier finishes. Other teams chasing include Binance, Amaysim, Lidl, Polar or Gazelle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_03_PCM0153.jpg

Already with 50km to go teh break is caught by the Puma train. That`s long before the first KoM and so Krasts might have misspend his energy today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_03_PCM0159.jpg

Well, or maybe not. The pace totally dropped after catching the break and so Krasts was able to attack again for the points. He was only followed by Hellemose, who moves up to 4th in the KoM rnaking.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_03_PCM0197a.jpg

The final climb and 175 riders are starting this one together. It is 8,6 km but on average only 3,4 % and seeing teh steepest part already at the end of the first half, most of the final part is far below that average. Will this short ramp be enough for the top puncheurs to create a gap to the strong roleurs?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_03_PCM0163.jpg

Surprisingly the first attack doesn`t come from the top guys. Instead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Cerny, who seems to have more freedom now with Sagan riding elsewhere, is accelerating with 4,9 km to go and on a 5,7 % part.

Behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Errazkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Aranburu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Van Niekerk and then all the top puncheurs. But also all other well placed riders including couple sprinters, who are still around such as Philipsen or Coquard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_03_PCM0171.jpg

3,8 km and the steep sections slowly are behind us. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png De Bie using a 4,6 % section for another attack after the earlier attempt failed.
With him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Gidich and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Sagan.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_03_PCM0174.jpg

Lutsenko chasing as a small gap appeared. Then Kragh Andersen and Bol as best placed sprinters with Izagirre, Wirtgen, Geoghegan Hart, Ganna, Coquard, Philipsen and many more still well placed.
In fact the group is still at 175 riders! Full peloton! No gaps!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_03_PCM0180.jpg

Lutsenko can close the gap and while it looks like the four top puncheurs can open a gap to the others, the sprinters around GC leader Bol are closign this one as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_03_PCM0187.jpg

Again the attack failed as we are at 2 % sections only and no rider really struggles to follow the better puncheurs.
1,2 km to go and again an acceleration. This time Sagan and Gidich are doing so. De Bie and Lutsenko remain in the first spots of the peloton seeing the attacks don`t really open gaps.

As Coquard is actually right next to them, it shows that it might become a uphill sprint finish, where the sprinters might be in favour.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_03_PCM0190.jpg

700 m and Coquard goes past Gidich. Sagan still a bit ahead.
Philipsen, Banaszek, Zhao, Groves all following with Lutsenko and De Bie as well going up.

Then Bol, Wirtgen and many others.

There are now a few gaps with a group of 44 riders apparently being in the first group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_03_PCM0198.jpg

200m and Sagan seems to be the only rider being able to challenge the sprinters. 0,4 % only here and this will surely help the closing sprinters, where Coquard is a lot closer to his first stage win than on the earlier flat stages.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_03_PCM0200.jpg

But it`s enough. The 3rd attack worked out to win the stage and Sagan shows, that despite ageing, he still has it. Great win for Binance, as well a great result for Coquard finally. Not the win but 2nd on todays stage clearly are points, that weren`t really expected and might compensate a bit for the earlier performances.
Gidich then in 3rd a bit behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_03_PCM0202.jpg

Close call but officials give Groves the 4th ahead of Philipsen and Banaszek. Likely 10cm later Philipsen would have passed the Aussie.

Zhao, De Bie and Lutsenko next but no gaps here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/ParisNice/mg23_parisnice_03_PCM0204.jpg

The first gap today opens in front of yesterdays stage winner Rajovic. The Cedevita sprinter is listed at +44s and also behind him a 6s gap.

Notable names to be in that 50s group are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Mano, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Kämna, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Masnada, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Stüssi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Storer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Craddock, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Kiriakidis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Spanopoulos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ferreyra, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Brown, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Senni.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Ardila, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Schmid or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Evenepoel even further behind but given the same time as well.
