Vuelta al Tachira - Stage Seven

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Tachira/s7/01.jpg

The last stage has set out the theme for the general classification. Today is an opportunity for those who have fallen out of the running to salvage their races by staking a claim on the stage win; or for others to consolidate their holds on their overall positions. It is a relatively familiar route today. The riders depart from Santa Cruz de Mora, nestled between the Sierra de La Culata and the Sierra Nevada de Mérida. Rather than following the valley between the two directly to our destination - La Grita - the route winds its way north, crossing La Culata alongside the Rio Charma. That will take us to the town of El Vigía and the now-familiar passage through Coloncito and into La Fría. The riders will then climb for 25 kilometres @ 5.2% before finishing in La Grita. The climb is broken up by a short descent into the village of Serboruco, so the organisers have marked the minor summit between Las Mesas and Serboruco as a third-category climb.

The cameras come on with the escapees nearing La Fría and more than 5½ minutes on the clock. The group formed without too much of a fight as nobody was willing to work with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Crabbe-CC Chevigny, who have to control the race for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Chiarello. There wasn't much interest in the bonuses available at the intermediate sprints in El Vigía and Coloncito, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Liphongyu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Vauquelin took them by virtue of leading the group as it rolled through. Speaking of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Liphongyu (+ 8'55), he has to be one of the favourites for a win by the breakaway. His main competitors will be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Manfredi (+ 5'35) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Chevrier (+ 8'18). Liphongyu managed an excellent 7th up yesterday's climb, with Manfredi 1'47" down on him and Chevrier much further back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Phelan will also be fighting to maintain his hold on the polkadots. The full 15-man break consists of:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Tachira/s7/03.jpg

With the gap to the peloton rapidly disintegrating, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png McCutcheon launches the first attack. It is possible he's just after some polkadots points, but it could be that he is chasing after something more. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Liphongyu is stuck to his wheel like glue. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Chevrier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Manfredi were lulled into a false sense of security by the slow pace and have been caught out of position. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Murillo leads the response but he doesn't have the strength to bring things back together. Instead it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sae.png Silva, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Mendoza, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/hrt.png Banzer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ade.png Wilksch who bridge across.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Tachira/s7/04.jpg

Just as the breakaway begins to merge back into a cohesive whole, things light up in the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Aurelien Paret-Peintre (+ 1'14) lost a decent chunk of time yesterday; he is eager to make it back today with a very strong attack! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Joey Rosskopf was never going to be enough to stop him and the Frenchman establishes a decent gap. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Remy Rochas has to take charge of chasing duties in order to stabilise things.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Tachira/s7/05.jpg

There was just those few moments of excitement before everything calmed down for the rest of the race. With the pace in the peloton high in order to keep pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Paret-Peintre in check, nobody was able to make their own great escapes. Similarly, the breakaway were forced to work together if they wanted any chance at victory. Things turned into a war of attrition and the man who lasted the longest was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Clement Chevrier. He had enough strength in the legs to beat out his competitors and take the stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Tachira/s7/06.jpg

As the stage was being won, the peloton was coming under the red kite. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Paret-Peintre maintains a small lead with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Natnael Berhane now leading the chase. Well positioned around him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png William Chiarello and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/caj.png Daniel Munoz. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gct.png Sindre Skjostad Lunke is on his wheel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bdx.png Mikel Iturria is over on the far side of the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Tachira/s7/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Chiarello shows why he is such a well-known name with an absolutely excellent punch, he flies around pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Berhane. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Paret-Peintre can sense him coming and is doing his best to manifest one last surge out of the legs. It doesn't look like anybody else can challenge this trio.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C2/Tachira/s7/08.jpg

Did I say trio? I meant duo. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Paret-Peintre has nothing left to give. It was a brave effort, but ultimately futile. Either pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Berhane has found a second wind or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ccc.png Chiarello has slowed. They cross the line alongside each other with their competitors splayed out behind them. The big movements only came in that final kilometre which means that there aren't any big gaps awarded today.
