Stage 7 Report

The decisive stages in the Volta a Portugal were always going to be numbers 7 and 8. Tomorrow is the big climbing test but today is the race of truth. 24ks of relatively flat time trialing. There will be two races today one among the TT specialists for the stage win and the other among the GC contenders for the edge going into tomorrow.

The TT specialists dominate the favorites, none of the GC guys a good enough TT’er to make this list.

The First 101 Riders

Overview

With nearly all the pure Tters losing significant time this group has most of the stage favorites including the one strong TTer who should not have lost time but has - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Kämna. But for a silly time loss yesterday he could have hoped to take the race lead today. Luckily for him that race lead sits with his teammate. He will be the 2nd to last rider in this group, which includes riders 1’56 and greater off the GC lead.

The Lanterne Rouge and first man down the start list is one of the stage favorites, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Dillier. Theoretically he could win the stage and still be the Lanterne Rouge as he starts the day over 4 minutes behind the next rider, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Campenaerts, who is another strong TT rider, and seven minutes behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Novikov who is third from last.

Recap

Dillier doesn’t get out of last place as he drops 25 seconds to Campenaert who finishes in 29’07. Dillier lost 54 seconds in the first half before making up 29 second half so the half way times could be misleading.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Leung matches Campenaerts but is given 2nd on the leaderboard while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Noia is 6 seconds slower.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Sterbini becomes the third man on 29’07 but is third on the leaderboard. But stage favorite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Sütterlin makes that tie less significant by setting a new best time of 28’49. 17 seconds better.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Verona (+0’32, 6th) pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Scotson (+0’36, 7th) put in solid times before pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Politt takes over 2nd place, 12 seconds behind the leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Beniusis, in 97th, is one of the highest placed TT riders, he threatens Sütterlin but comes up 9 seconds short. Good enough for 2nd.

And just as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Sütterlin is beginning to dream his hopes are crushed by one of the last riders capable of threatening him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Kämna goes 1 second faster. Kämna made up 8 seconds in the second half of the course so the rise towards the end might be helping the stronger climbers a little. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund, another solid climber also made up time on the 2nd half to take 3rd, 12 seconds down just, before Kämna finished.
-----
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Sütterlin laments the aero drag caused by the many colors on his jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Kämna charges across the line to seize the hot seat.

The Next 59 Riders

Overview

The riders expected to contest the GC are mostly in the top 20 so this group, which covers riders 31 seconds to 1’56 off the GC lead, mainly includes secondary GC riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Gregaard and weaker TT GC riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Inkelaar plus the puncheurs who have already had their chances this race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Erdenebat is the only top TT contender in this group.

Recap

Inkelaar is the first notable rider on the course, he loses 2’03 to Kämna. That will be a smaller loss to other GC riders but he will need to be aggressive tomorrow to get anything from this race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Sosa who tried to be agrressive on Stage 3 and had it backfire loses 1’53.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Ndayisenga loses 2’14, he is mainly here to support pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Meintjes.

Another support rider, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Spanopoulos, who is more of an all-rounder, loses 43 seconds to the leader. That suggests the likes of Sosa and Inkelaar will be losing over a minute to the other GC riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Erdenebat after sitting 3rd at the halfway point drops to 6th at the finish, 15 seconds down. But he is the first rider to crack the stage top 10 in a while and he has the virtual GC lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Novak another top climber, puts in what is probably a good time given his TT abilities, +1’35. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Gregaard is not as successful, he loses 1’43.
-----
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Andriafenomananiaina gets his name mentioned by looking good in his National Champions Jersey. He currently sits 20th on the stage.

The Final 21 Riders

Overview

The last group of riders includes all the GC favorites. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Monsalve will be the first to start, he is 27 seconds off the GC lead.

Recap

Monsalve loses 1’04, a which seems like a solid time and puts him on the same time as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Erdenebat for the virtual GC.

Right behind him though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Cras loses just 41 seconds (26th) and takes over the virtual GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Aular is the next GC man, he matches Monsalve at +1’04 but drops behind Cras in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Kennaugh sets a new best time for a GC rider at +0’35 and takes over the GC lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Carapaz can’t quite match that, he loses 49 seconds.

Kennaugh’s time contines to stand as the best by a GC rider as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Almeida, starting the day in 11th, loses 39 seconds. He was 4 seconds up on Kennaugh to start the day so the teammates are tied on the virtual GC. But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Madrazo, the next rider, just knocks them back, he loses 39 seconds in the TT but started the day with a 5 second edge on the MOL riders.

But Madrazo’s joy is short-lived as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Lasinis puts in a new best time for a GC rider on +0’32 (17th on the day) and takes over the virtual GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Meintjes can’t match that he loses 50 seconds. Nor can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos, +0’45. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Keough’s GC run comes to an end as he loses 4’07.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues shows why he is one of the favorites for the race, putting in the best time by a GC rider yet, +0’30. He is the new virtual GC leader with 3 riders left to finish.

Two of those are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Andersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Madouas, who aren’t big threats, they both lose over 1’30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Galta is the last man on the course. He was 3 seconds slower than Rodrigues in the first half and started the day 7 seconds ahead. He finish 38 seconds down, that 8 seconds behind Rodrigues, we have a new GC leader.

But it will all come down to tomorrow, 14 riders within 36 seconds of the lead.

The consolation for Carlsberg is they win back-to-back stages through pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Kämna, although that might be less consoling considering he would have a big GC lead right now if he hadn’t thrown away time yesterday.

None of the other jersey’s change hands. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Almeida extends his young rider lead to 1’09 whle MOL’s team lead shrinks to 9 seconds.
---------
