Volta a Portugal
Stage 6 is the third and final hilly rated stage in the Volta a Portugal. It isn’t that hilly with just two Cat 3 climbs but the second one is the climb to the finish on the Viana do Castelo. That climb is 3.4k at 6.1%. Probably not hard enough to create big gaps but definitely a chance for the punchier riders. The riders will be glad they don't have to tackle the cobbled descent.
As a result, it is the punchy riders who dominate the start list, yesterday’s winner Skujins at the top of the list.
10k gone, only KOM leader Chiu out front as Genii Hyundai chased down all the other escapees, presumably with the goal of getting their own man in the break. Not a lot for the break to do today, no sprint points and just one Cat 3 climb before the finish. So, anyone on the attack will be hoping the peloton lets them steal the stage win.
Another 10k gone, Chiu (1st KOM, 23 points) has been joined by Quispe (3rd, 19), Zumer (2nd, 19) and, Noia. Only one King Power rider in the break, so far, along with a San Marinese. These 4 have 1’21 on the peloton, two more riders are looking to join them and have 23 seconds still to bridge. They are: Nsengimana and Fortunato. Looks like Genii should get their man in the break.
Just under 100k to go for the peloton, the break has been gradually increasing it’s lead and it has just hit 5’00 minutes for the first time. ELCO (Bouglas) and Spark-BNZ (Battsengel) are the teams working in the peloton to keep the break under control. In about 10k the break will tackled the mid-stage Cat 3.
It is raining again today although the sun keeps trying to break through. The break have a pretty view up the gorge but will be thinking about the Alto de Covide which starts once they cross this bridge. It is 9k at 4% with pretty steady gradients.
Aker decides to push the pace on the climb and about halfway up Zhao has the lead back to 3’07.
Zumer launches the first attack from the break about 800 meters from the top and gets a small gap.
Zumer holds his lead to the KOM point but Chiu takes second meaning Zumer only gains 2 points. Chiu now leads 27 to 25. Nsengimana takes the last points meaning Quispe doesn’t score.
The peloton eases off on the 2nd half of the climb and the break’s lead climbs back to 3’54 with 73k to go.
With 29k to go the peloton has the lead down to 1’49 thanks mostly to Binance (Goncalves), Aker (Zhao), Amaysim (Kennaugh) and Tinkoff (Banaszek). Spark-BNZ also coming to the front now. About 50 riders have been dropped from the peloton. Schelling probably the most notable rider among them.
10k to the start of the final climb, 14k to the finish, the break still has 1’06 but ELCO just sent two fresh riders to the front: Bouglas and Kastrantas. The peloton reformed but has split again with 67 riders caught out, more big names caught out in addition to Schelling again, including Senni (8th on GC), Kämna (4th), Leknessund (6th, 1st Young Rider) Misbah (7th), and Sicard (19st).
5k banner, 1.5k to the finish climb. The break have 31 seconds, seems like they will be caught on the climb. Soulious, Miltiadis, and Figueiredo have joined the chase. The dropped group’s deficit has grown to 1’56 despite Grieg trying to lead a fight back, the riders caught behind are generally secondary leaders so nobody else helping.
2.5k to go, the break haven’t given up yet. Chiu leading, the climb is a pretty steady 6-8% the whole way up.
Just under 2k to go the break is almost caught. Skujins launches the first attack. Sureda is the Carlsberg rider behind him.
Skujins rips past the break and gets daylight from the rest. Giannoutsos and Rodrigues leading the chase. The other puncheurs are all caught further back, mostly GC riders closest to Skujins.
Under the 1k banner Skujins has 15 seconds but he seems to be fading. Across the road behind are Rodrigues, Giannoutsos, Mohoric, Sureda, and Zumer. Skujins edged Mohoric yesterday, the Slovenian looking to return the favor. At the back the dropped riders have regained contacts, although we could see new gaps on this climb.
Skujins isn’t going to win back-to-back stages. Mohoric almost past him with 700 meters to go. The 11 shown have opened up a 21 second gap, they include the riders noted above as well as puncheurs like Paulinho, McCarthy, and Meintjes and two more overall contenders in Galta and Gregaard. The Yellow jersey is well back and will need to hope for minimal time gaps to hold his lead.
500 meters for Mohoric, but he looks to be fading. Galta is moving fastest and is almost past him and Skujins has found a 2nd wind. Almeida has closed the gap to the front 11.
300 meters for Galta, if he can hold this it will be a finish Carlsberg legend Guldhammer would have been proud of.
Galta celebrates his first win in Carlsberg colors. Rodrigues, 2nd, and Meintjes third. The GC guys prove strongest on this stage.
Mohoric and Skujins settle for 4th and 5th.
Giannoutsos takes 6th and Gregaard gives Carlsberg two in the top 7. Almeida 8th and Paulinho and McCarthy wrap up the top 10.
The first 97 riders get the same time, meaning Andersen, who finished 29th, doesn’t look any time, but he does lose the jersey as Galta started the day 19 seconds down. Rodrigues moves up to 4th on GC. Those two are best positioned as we move to the last 2 days where the GC will be decided.
Andersen holds on to the points jersey although he is now tied with Skujins. Leknessund is one of the first riders to miss the front group meaning he will have give the White Jersey to Almeida. Vansevenant 2nd in that competition, 5 seconds back.
Senni (8th on GC), Misbah (7th), and Kämna (4th) all also miss the split dropping them out of the top GC 10 and damaging an otherwise good day for Carlsberg. Other than Andersen the only prologue specialist still in the GC top 10 is somewhat surprisingly, sprinter Lukie Keough. Partially thanks to Keough MOL continues to lead the team competition, they have 21 second over Zalgiris and 30 over Carlsberg, that is likely to change tomorrow.
