Stage 5 Report

Stage 5 is the hardest stage so far. The hilly rated stage features three Cat 3 and then the Cat 1 climb to Torneiros. That climb tops out just 12k from the end of the 165k stage. It will be a tougher ask for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Andersen to retain his Yellow jersey today. The stage also includes 3 sprint points.

The organizers think today is a stage for the punchier riders:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/favs.jpg

The breakaway is slow to form perhaps because a sprint point comes just 11k into the race. At the sprint pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Herrera is the lone leader and takes maximum points but behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Losch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij and, Yellow Jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Andersen are showing in interest in the remainder.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/01.jpg

Losch and Van der Kooij take the remaining points. The two points for Van der Kooij move him 2 points ahead of Andersen and the same amount behind Lutsyshyn in the points competition.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/02.jpg

With the sprint point taken care of Herrera is allowed to escape and with 23k gone he is joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Leung, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Menten, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Medvedev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png De Gendt, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Noia. Second day in a row with a San Marinese rider and two King Power riders in the break. Others still trying to bridge across, not clear if they will make it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/03.jpg

No other riders are allowed join the break so once again none of the riders in the break have any KOM points. For a breakaway rider to catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Quispe in that competition they will need to still be in the lead at the top of the Cat 1. To make life harder it is rainy and windy today.

With 101k to go the break begins the first categorized climb of the day, the Cat 3 Joāo de Lobrigos, 4.3k at 5.2% but much steeper towards the top. The break’s lead reached about 4’40 but is now down to 3’57 with Puma, Tinkoff, DuckDuckGo and Binance among the teams working.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/04.jpg

Herrera proves strongest on the climb taking maximum points ahead of De Gendt and Menten.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Oliveira sets a hard pace on the climb and reduces the deficit to the break by a minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/06.jpg

Soon after the break reaches the next climb, the Cat 3 to Cumeira starts with 91k to go. It is 7.6k at 3.7%.

Oliveira pushes the pace again and with 2k still to climb the peloton can see the break. The lead is down to 1’11.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/07.jpg

At the top Menten outsprints De Gendt and Medvedev. Peloton still just over 1 minute behind as Oliveira has slowed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/08.jpg

With the climbing over for a little while the peloton eases off and at the 2nd sprint point with 77k to go the break’s lead is back to 1’59 having peaked at about 2’15. The break do not contest the sprint point. Nobody has been dropped from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/09.jpg

50k to go for the peloton, after letting the lead go back to over 3 minutes, they have it back down to 1’40. Puma (Rutsch, Nieuwenhuis), Binance (Khodayari) and DuckDuckGo (Rachid) on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/10.jpg

32k to go, attacks start in the break as they reach the last sprint point. De Gendt and Menten take the points but their day is close to over as the peloton is just 26 seconds down. Tinkoff, Amaysim and Aker helping the teams noted earlier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/11.jpg

This sprint marks the beginning of the end of the stage, in 2k they will start the final Cat 3 to Pinho (6.1k at 4.4%) then a short descent and the Cat 1 which peaks with 12k to go. The last 12k are mostly downhill.

On the climb Herrera and Leung are immediately dropped and swept up by the peloton. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Menten pulls away from the others. With 4.5k to go he has 45 seconds on the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/12.jpg

3.8k to climb for the peloton as they catch the remnants of the break. Only Menten still ahead, he has 1’14. The sprinters on the front still so the pace isn’t that hard. 5 of the top 6 in the KOM competition have moved up to the front of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/13.jpg

Menten’s lead is 1’04 as he takes 6 more KOM points. Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Chiu has launched the first attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/14.jpg

Chiu holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Zumer to take sole possession of the virtual KOM. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Den Berg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Debesay and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Quispe also on the attack. None of them will take points on this climb but the Cat 1 climb still to come.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/15.jpg

20k banner. The KOM attackers are all caught, Menten has 28 seconds and is about to turn on to the final climb. It is the Cat 1 to Torneiros, 7.3k at 5% with the toughest sections early. Only 1 rider (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Leung) dropped from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/16.jpg

5k to climb. Menten is caught, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Tikhonin has been doing most of the work but now the Amaysim trio of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png McCarthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Evans, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Power have moved up. About 15 riders dropped, mostly sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/17.jpg

With 2.3k to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Meintjes launches the first attack. Behind him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Van Gils, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Sosa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Paulinho, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Almeida. The Portuguese eager to be noticed in their home race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/18.jpg

Meintjes relents and is passed by the others and caught by a peloton led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Dzamastagic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Guerreiro, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Madrazo, among othes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/19.jpg

1k to climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues is caught, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Almeida almost caught. The other 3 still pushing at the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Guerreiro, leading the chase, has a small gap to the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Storer on his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/20.jpg

Sosa on his own by the time he reaches the top, he has 9 seconds over a group of 5 including Almeida, Van Gils, Guerreiro, Storer and Paulinho. Then 15 seconds to a 137-man peloton being led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Nieuwenhuis. We would expect more gaps over the top. There is a short flat section before the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/21.jpg

8.5k to go, Sosa about to hit the downhill. He has 12 seconds on Almeida who is trying to bridge across. The other are caught, the peloton is 9 seconds behind Almeida, no further splits in the peloton so far. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Andersen looks like he could retain the jersey another day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/22.jpg

4k for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Sosa still has 18 seconds. Almeida was caught. All the time Sosa lost on Stage 3 might be helping him here as he isn’t a GC threat right now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Ndayisenga is the Bralirwa rider trying to attack out of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/23.jpg

2k now. Sosa still holding a 16 second lead. Behind Ndayisenga it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Skujins and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Storer leading the chase. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Madouas hovering just a few riders back, if comes back together he will be a favorite in a sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/24.jpg

Under the 1k banner Sosa looks to have hit the wall. Closest chasers are Ndayisenga, Skujins, Storer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric. Madouas just behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/25.jpg

600 meters, agony for Sosa, a much smater attack today but it doesn’t work out. Ndayisenga has dropped back. The other rider not mentioned before in the front group is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Novak.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/26.jpg

Round the final bend, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric on the inside has the edge. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Madouas coming fast between riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/27.jpg

100 meters. Still very close between Mohoric, Storer and Skujins. Madouas doesn’t look like he can close.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Skujins finds a little extra to win the stage ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Storer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Madouas 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Novak 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Budenieks edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Quita for 6th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Ndayisenga gets 8th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Sosa just misses points in 9th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant close out the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/30.jpg

The Yellow Jersey easily survives the stage and finishes 11th, he also scores just enough to take back the lead in the points competition, by 1 point. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vingerling who was second on GC, doesn’t make the front group, but no other changes in the top 10. No changes in the other jerseys either: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund leads White and MOL has the team’s jersey.
