Stage 4 Report

Stage 4 of the Tour of Portugal takes the riders 191k from Sabugal to Viseu. A couple of Cat 3’s and 3 sprint points along the way. The stage is flat rated and should be a second shot for the sprinters. But there are a number of bumps along the way so the pack could be under some pressure.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Hayakawa tops the favorites list, stage 2 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn is also listed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/favs.jpg

The race opens with a brief cobble section in Sabugal, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Scotson launches the first attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/01.jpg

10k gone and the breakaway group has swelled to 8 riders. The peloton seemed content with this but now others are attacking behind so things could still change. The current breakaway consists of Scotson plus pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Granigan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Ferreira, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Bloem, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Louvel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Debesay, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Maccagli, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Parashchak. They have 1’30 on the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Quispe, who is wearing polka dots, has missed the move but he is one of the new attackers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/02.jpg

8 was enough for the peloton and the additional attackers were shut down. With 20k gone the lead has already ballooned to 4’06. Quispe missed the move but none of the attackers have any KOM points and with only 12 available today he will keep that jersey another day (tied with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Chiu). Working on the front are Aker (Johannessen), DuckDuckGo (Henao), Lampre (Antonelli) and Tinkoff (Novikov).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/03.jpg

At the first Cat 3 Granigan jumps early, but he isn’t know for his climbing skills and he passed before the line. Debasay takes maximum ahead of Louvel and Bloem. The break lead by 5’45 with 128k to go. Bloem is the closest of these riders on GC, at 1’47 down, so not a big worry for Aker, they are leaving the chasing to the three sprint teams.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/04.jpg

90k to go for the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Strakhov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Henao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Antonelli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Rachid, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Mamykin are the first five. They have closed the break’s lead to 3’44. The break about to tackle the second Cat 3 to Trancoso, 5.1k at 3.9%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/05.jpg

This time Granigan gets it right and takes maximum points, ahead of Debasay and Louvel. Debasay up to 4th in that competition with 10 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/06.jpg

Soon after comes the first sprint point and Bloem by far the most aggressive there as he takes the points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Parashchak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Maccagli. Oddly, Granigan, who is by far the best sprinter in the group shows no interest in the sprint. Peloton at 3’27.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/07.jpg

55k to go for the peloton, they have narrowed the lead to 2’57, same 3 teams working. There was a brief split in the peloton earlier but it was quickly closed. Break will reach the second sprint point soon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Bloem again wins the sprint, he appears the most motivated to sprint, maybe due to his better GC position. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Scotson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Parashchak take the rest of the points. The break has 51k to go and a 2.45 lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/09.jpg

At the third sprint with 30k to go Bloem leaves it late but snatches the points. This time ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Ferreira and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Maccagli. The peloton have upped the pace and have the break’s lead down to 1’20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/10.jpg

The last rise on the course with about 22k to go splits the peloton with 28 riders off the front. Serious fire power being committed as the first part of the peloton is being driven by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Skujins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Dzamastagic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Arndt. They have the break’s lead down to 48 seconds. Puma (Madouas, Rutsch) is leading the second part of the peloton and trying to close the gap, right now it is just 32 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/11.jpg

10k banner, the peloton has the break in their sight but that is still a 42 second gap. The peloton did reform so just a handful of riders off the back now. Both the break and the chase have been a little disorganized. In the break a number of riders have been sitting on while just two chasers on the front of the peloton right now - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Rachid.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/12.jpg

A huge turn from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Mamykin shuts down the break with 6.3k to go. Not a lot of helpers left so this will be a messy sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/13.jpg

2.9k to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Medvedev on the front followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Dzamastagic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Coutinho (in green). Next to him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Skujins leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Banaszek. The rest of the sprinters clustered behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/14.jpg

2.2k to go, both leads outs down to one rider, Dzamastagic and Skujins are strong riders but it seems unlikely they can deliver their sprinters safely home from here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/15.jpg

Skujins is quickly spent and Banaszek shifts to the Lampre train. With 1.4k to go Coutinho looks ready to launch around Dzamastagic. The rider behind him is Banaszek, then from left to right it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Zhao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Mareczko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Keough, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Sureda, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Nieuwenhuis, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Kennaugh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/16.jpg

700 meters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Coutinho isn’t going to win this one, he is already being swamped. On the left Stage 2 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn has found the inside line and is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Losch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij. Stage favorite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Hayakawa is following Sureda, but will need to find space if he is going to win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/17.jpg

400 meters, Lutsyshyn, Zhao and Sureda are the front three. Mareczko and Van der Kooij are coming fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/18.jpg

200 meters Lutsyshyn is in line to make it 2 for 2, Hayakawa has found room on the far right and is the biggest thread along with Van der Kooij.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/19.jpg

But Lutsyshyn left himself a little too much to do today and he cracks, Van der Kooij flies by him on the left, Hayakawa almost up to him on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij wins stage 4 for Rabobank. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vingerling is making a late run for the podium behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn holds on for second, two wins would have been nice but a 1st and a 2nd is pretty good. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Hayakawa completes the podium, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vingerling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Sureda is 5th followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Mareczko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Zhao.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ela.png Bouglas comes late to take the last of the points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Banaszek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Nieuwenhuis complete the top ten.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S4/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Andersen retains the race lead but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn takes over the points jersey 45 – 41.

No changes in the other jerseys.
