Stage 3 Report

Stage 3 of the Volta a Portugal is the first hilly stage. A Cat 2 climb plus 2 Cat 3s and 2 Cat 4s. The second Cat 4 peaks just 13k from the end and is quickly followed by a Cat 3 that peaks just 4k from the end. Also 3 sprint points on the 178k course. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Andersen's lead will definitely be under pressure today.

The organizers think pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Sagan is the biggest threat. None of the main GC contenders on the favorites list but a rider like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Meintjes might hope to gain some ground.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/favs.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Quispe has the mountain jersey and he seems interested in keeping it as he is the first attacker.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/01.jpg

15k gone, 5k to the first sprint. Quispe has been joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Chiu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Den Berg, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Zumer. This looks like the break of the day, they have 2’29. Chiu getting a chance to show off the Hong Kong NC jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/02.jpg

At the sprint point it is Zumer, then Chiu and Van den Berg. No sweep for Quispe today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/03.jpg

Quispe also struggles on the first Cat 4 and the points go to Chiu ahead of Zumer and Van Den Berg. The break have 3’30 on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/04.jpg

With 118k to go the break reach the main climb of the day, the Cat 2 Serra da Lousā, it is 7.2k at an average of 5%. Their lead went out to about 5’15 and has been holding there for a while with DuckDuckGo, Spark-BNZ and Aker-MOT working.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/05.jpg

3k into the climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Sosa attacks the peloton. They can’t let a rider like that get too far away. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Waerenskjold and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Dillier think it is a good idea and are trying to join him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Johannessen trying to close them down. The action has reduced the break’s lead to 3’52.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/06.jpg

2k to climb for Sosa, he has 32 seconds on the peloton. The other two were easily swept up. Still Johannessen on the front. Not clear what the King Power man is hoping to accomplish but he has reduced the gap from him to the break to 2’17.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Zumer wins the mountain sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Chiu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Van Den Berg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Quispe. The peloton still chasing Sosa and the break’s lead is down to 1’57.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/08.jpg

Quispe does pick up 4 points but his lead in the KOM is down to 6 with both Chiu and Zumer on 13 points.

At the 2nd sprint point at the bottom of the descent Zumer takes the points ahead of Van Den Berg and Chiu. Quispe was dropped on the descent and has some ground to make up. Sosa is 1’27 back, having extended his lead to 43 seconds on the peloton which is still being led by Johannessen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/09.jpg

At the next Cat 3 Chiu takes maximum points ahead of Zumer and Van Den Berg. Quispe was able to rejoin but was dropped on the climb. Chiu now tied with him for the KOM lead. The only remaining climbs come in the last 15k, so not clear if the break will score more points today. There are 81k to go, Sosa is still 52 seconds behind the leaders with the peloton at 1’41. If Sosa can’t reach the leaders soon, he will be in trouble, as the next 65k or so before the closing climbs is relatively flat.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/10.jpg

67k to go, Sosa caught and Quispe almost caught, the others at 1’50. That is still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Johannessen on the front, a heroic amount of work from him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/11.jpg

40k left for the three leaders, their lead is 2’02. The peloton eased off after the catch of Sosa and Quispe dangled off the front for a while, but now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Hayakawa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Rutsch have taken over the chase and Quispe has been caught and the break’s lead is shrinking again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/12.jpg

A late burst from Chiu gives him the final sprint point of the day ahead of Zumer. The leaders have 1’43 with 36k to ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/13.jpg

29k to go. Grupo Compacto. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Banaszek closes the final meters. Peloton down to 139 with yesterday’s stage winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn among those dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/14.jpg

16k to go and the peloton has reached the first of the finishing climbs, the Cat 4 Lagares de Beira, 3.4k at 4.1%. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Rikunov on the front, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Coutinho and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Dzamastagic just behind him. Peloton down to 130 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/15.jpg

1.5k into the climb Tinkoff have been doing a lot of work so it is not surprise when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Skujins attacks. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric looks to follow him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Yates try to join them, Vansevenant makes it, Yates doesn’t. At the top of the climb it is Skujins, Vansevenant and Mohoric in that order. But the steam has gone out of the attack and the peloton is closing fast led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Figueiredo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/17.jpg

9k to go, after the front 3 were caught pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant immediately countered but his lead has never been much above 10 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric leading the chase himself.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/18.jpg

The peloton is all back together as they reach the foot of the final climb with 6.6k to go. The last climb is 3.6k at 3.9% and also offers Cat 3 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/19.jpg

The next attack comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund (in white), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Gladysh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png McCarthy. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Nieuwenhuis leads the pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/20.jpg

1.3k to climb, McCarthy has dropped the other two. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Skujin leading the chase. The attacks haven’t done much damage, still 127 riders in the peloton and the Yellow Jersey still well placed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/21.jpg

McCarthy still has a small gap at the top of the climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric leading the chase, 3.2k to ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/22.jpg

McCarthy caught, 1.2k to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Losch comes to the front. Just behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Madouas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Nieuwenhuis. Then a number of puncheurs like McCarthy, Mohoric, Skujins, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Sagan, as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Andersen (in Yellow) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Guerreiro. Behind them some GC guys plus some more sprinters who made the split, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Coutinho, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Keough, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vingerling. The final push has split the pack and only 60 riders left up front, most notable absentees are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png Sosa (don’t want to be on that team bus after the race) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Inkelaar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/23.jpg

700 meters, Losch has held his position through a couple of bends and now has a clean shot at the finish. Madouas closest to him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/24.jpg

The climbing may have taken too much out of Losch, Madouas goes by him with 400 meters to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/25.jpg

200 meters Madouas has clear daylight, Puma backed their man throughout and he looks like he is going to pay them back. He lost 25 seconds in the prologue so he can’t take the leader’s jersey. Losch trying to hold on to second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Guerreiro is closest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Madouas celebrates. Guerreiro is past Losch and into 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Guerreiro a clear 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Coutinho finishes fast to snatch the last podium spot from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Losch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Sagan takes 5th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Andersen. The latter will keep the race lead and add to his points lead (15 points ahead of Coutinho). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Skujin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png McCarthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Mohoric and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Keough wrap up the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S3/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund holds on to the White Jersey and MOL still lead the team’s competition.
