The Race
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Profiles/mg_copmalmottt.jpg

Welcome to the unofficial TTT World Championships here at the Øresund. The teams will start in the capital of Denmark to cross the Øresund Bridge to Malmo in Sweden. Luckily the riders won’t have to pass the passport controls, so they should be able to finish the nearly 60 km in a bit more than an hour. And while the profile is mostly flat, the passage on the Øresund Bridge will be crucial given how much the teams will be exposed to the wind there.
The organizers name pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png EA Vesuvio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Cedevita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff - La Datcha as the primary favorites, but on a good day pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk, wildcard pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Jura GIANTS or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Polar might fight for the win as well.

Teams 1 - 8 | Checkpoint 1

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/01.jpg

We’ll follow the teams in chronological order to get to know the route. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Aker – MOT is the first team to start the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/02.jpg

The second team on the road is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Rabobank, here seen in Copenhagen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/03.jpg

One of the favourites, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk is the next team to race, seen already in the outskirts of Copenhagen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/04.jpg

They’re followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Evonik – ELKO who are just about to start the Øresund Bridge passage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/05.jpg

Fifth on the road – and the bridge – are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff - La Datcha Team, another favourite for the podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Jura GIANTS are here with a wildcard, but are among the favourites nonetheless.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/07.jpg

Team number 7 on the road is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Moser – Sygic. The Øresund passage is about a third of the distance of the entire race, so it’s not just for the pictures you see the bridge that often.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/08.jpg

The last team of the first group is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Amaysim Australia.com. We use their passage of the first Checkpoint to take a view on the split times here.

Provisional Leaderboard
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff - La Datcha Team24’53
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk + 3
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Jura GIANTS +10
4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Amaysim Australia.com+ 17
5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Moser – Sygic + 23
6. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Evonik – ELKO + 37
7. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Rabobank+ 38
8. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Aker – MOT + 1‘22

And the organizers chose their favourites well, as those teams named by them are on the first three places until now and the only ones who are within a reasonable range to still have a chance for a podium finish. We’ll see what the times are actually worth when the next teams arrive at the first checkpoint.

Teams 9 - 16 | Checkpoint 1

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Team Popo4Ever p/b Morshynska are the first team of the second third. They’re a wildcard team and already struggle on the bridge where two of their riders already lost contact. No surprise they’re found on the bottom end of the rankings.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png ZARA – Irizar’s doing much better, contesting pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Jura GIANTS for the last podium spot until now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Gazelle’s really struggling. They are only five on the bridge already, while their other riders are pretty much scattered all over the place. So don’t be surprised to see them somewhere when we have a look at the other teams. At least this guerilla marketing should please their sponsors.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/15.jpg

And here is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Menicucci being overtaken by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Team Puma – SAP, who rank in the upper midfield at checkpoint 1.

Next on the road are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png ISA – Hexacta, although we don’t have any footage of them on the road due to technical difficulties with their TV Moto. And though that’s a shame in general, we didn’t miss much regarding the fight for the win as they do okay, but not much more.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/18.jpg

We see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png King Power already after the Øresund Bridge, though the director couldn’t be bothered to not show the landmark again. Their time is pretty average.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Lidl Cycling’s management can’t be happy with this view. They did alright in the first part of the race, but Gee is already their firth rider to lose contact with them just approaching the second checkpoint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Minions is the last team in our second part, they already show us how to ride the more technical last part of the route. They’re still in touch with the best teams at checkpoint 1, as shown in the provisional leaderboard.

Provisional Leaderboard
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff - La Datcha Team24’53
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk + 3
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Jura GIANTS +10
4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png ZARA – Irizar + 10
5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Team Puma – SAP+ 13
6. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Minions + 15
7. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Amaysim Australia.com+ 17
8. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png King Power+ 19
9. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Moser – Sygic + 23
10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png ISA – Hexacta+ 24

Teams 1 - 8 | Checkpoint 2

And as we’re already approaching the second checkpoint with our little tour around the circuit, it’s a good chance to have a look how the first eight teams did in the second part of the race.

Not much has changed in the provisional ranking (apart from the time differences of course): pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Rabobank and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Evonik – ELKO changed places in the backfield where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Aker – MOT is well off the pace. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Jura GIANTS lost some time to the two leading teams, thus making them the leaders of the midfield which further consists of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Amaysim Australia.com and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Moser – Sygic. But there’s been some movement at the top where the Scandinavians from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk used their home advantage to take the lead from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff - La Datcha Team!

Provisional Leaderboard
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk 43‘47
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff - La Datcha Team + 7
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Jura GIANTS +23
4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Amaysim Australia.com+ 30
5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Moser – Sygic + 43
6. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Rabobank + 1‘14
7. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Evonik – ELKO + 1’16
8. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Aker – MOT + 2’34

Teams 17 - 24 | Checkpoint 1

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/24.jpg

We see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png MOL Cycling Team at the 10 km banner, already in the outskirts of Malmo. They’re among the weakest teams at the first time split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png cycleYorkshire gives us a last view at the bridge from Malmo. They’re just inside the Top 10 until now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/bnb.png Binance is another team at the bottom end of the ranking. The tractor in the picture is nonetheless purely incidental.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/elc.png ELCO – ABEA is exactly at the middle of the table at checkpoint 1.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/37.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png EA Vesuvio was named as the biggest favourite by the organizers and they live well up to it. They set the best time for the first sector!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/38.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Cedevita is well in striking distance with a third place, just 3 seconds down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/35.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Polar is among the best as well with a 4th place and just a couple of seconds behind.

Provisional Leaderboard
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png EA Vesuvio 24’50
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff - La Datcha Team + 2
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Cedevita +3
4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Polar + 6
5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk + 6
6. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Jura GIANTS + 12
7. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png ZARA – Irizar + 13
8. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Team Puma – SAP + 16
9. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png cycleYorkshire+ 17
10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Minions + 18

Teams 9 - 16 | Checkpoint 2

And as we’re already approaching the finish with our little tour around the circuit, it’s a good chance to have a look how the teams in the middle did in the middle part of the race.

There are some smaller shifts in the ranking in comparison to the first checkpoint (most notable the aforementioned leader change and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Team Puma – SAP climbing up to the final podium spot), but the general picture does pretty much resemble the one at the first checkpoint.

Provisional Leaderboard
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk 43‘47
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff - La Datcha Team + 7
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Team Puma – SAP+17
4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Jura GIANTS + 23

Teams 1 - 8 | Finish

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Aker – MOT (or what’s left of them) is the first team to cross the finish line.

No changes at the top, though it did get tense as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff - La Datcha Team nearly overtook pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk again! Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Evonik – ELKO gained some places while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Amaysim Australia.com lost some.

Provisional Leaderboard
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk 1h03’07
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff - La Datcha Team s.t.
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Jura GIANTS +24
4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Evonik – ELKO + 1’41
5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Moser – Sygic + 1‘56
6. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Amaysim Australia.com+ 2’04
7. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Rabobank + 2‘10
8. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Aker – MOT + 4‘02

Teams 17 - 24 | Checkpoint 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/36.jpg

We didn’t forget pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg - Danske Bank in the previous part, we just needed a picture for this one. And here they are, 1 km from the finish. And that they are nearly finished is the best you can say about them, as they were among the last teams the whole race.

EA Vesuvio stays in front at checkpoint 2, extending their lead a bit. Behind them now is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk who really did well in the second sector, in contrast to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff - La Datcha Team who fell to 4th. Given the results here, the fight for the win is between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png EA Vesuvio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk (who already finished) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Cedevita.

Provisional Leaderboard
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png EA Vesuvio 43’41
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk + 5
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Cedevita +7
4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff - La Datcha Team + 12
5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Polar + 12
6. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Team Puma – SAP + 22
7. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Jura GIANTS + 28
8. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png cycleYorkshire+ 30
9. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png ZARA – Irizar + 31
10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/elc.png ELCO – ABEA + 33

Teams 9 - 16 | Finish

Apart from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Amaysim Australia.com falling further in the ranking and missing the top 10 spots, there’s mostly the same picture we’ve already had at checkpoint 2: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Team Puma – SAP is now third and most of the other teams that recently finished are now on places 5 to 9.

Provisional Leaderboard
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk 1h03’07
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff - La Datcha Team s.t.
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Team Puma – SAP+16
4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Jura GIANTS + 24
5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kng.png King Power + 29

7. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Minions+ 33

9. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Evonik – ELKO+ 1‘41
10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Moser – Sygic + 1‘56

Teams 17 - 24 | Finish

Before the last teams cross the finish line, we already have a close initial situation with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff - La Datcha Team on the decimal places. And it gets even closer as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Polar takes over the lead by fractions of a second out of the picture! The director was distracted by the fight between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png EA Vesuvio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Cedevita for the win, sorry to the Finns! So we have three teams on the same time at the top before the two best teams arrive. And that’s not the only ‘s.t.’ we’ll see at the end result, as there are three other places that are only decided by the decimals (including the fight for 22nd between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Aker – MOT and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg - Danske Bank).
But now for the big final:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/33.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png EA Vesuvio is first to arrive at the finish and …
Spoiler
… they take over the lead! They’re 14 seconds ahead of the threesome.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Malmo/34.jpg

The last team is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Cedevita. It’s quickly obvious they’re not able to attack the time just set by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png EA Vesuvio, but as the podium fight is so tight, everything’s from 2nd to 5th is still possible for them. They arrive and …
Spoiler
… they finish with the same time as the other three too! But what will the decimals say? It’s …
… second place for them!

Final Leaderboard
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png EA Vesuvio 1h02’52
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Cedevita + 14
