Hong Kong Challenge - Stage 3
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0318.jpg

The final stage is pretty flat with some smaller bumps but then ends with the longest climb of the race. Far from being a mountain, neither being a real hill, something in between. 4 km length and gradients towards 10 % surely should be enough for some nice battles there. The favourites are mainly hybrids but apparently with a small advantage for the climbers as we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Aular and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png McNulty at the top. Later might be the biggest GC favourite by now with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Faglum Karlsson being another interest rider for the GC podium.

Though we also see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Higuita as also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Teuns or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Chaves, which are more hybrid than the others and obviously got a high rating after the hillier opening stage.

With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Paillot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Kung we have some time trialists with decent uphill skills in the prime position now, which surely won`t give up easily and then some allrounders such as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Darbellay, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Goos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Xandri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Barta, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Barbio, who as well first need to be beaten by stronger uphill riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0321.jpg

8 riders form todays break and despite the three early KoM`s no real interest by the high placed riders there.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Lilovski

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0333.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sct.png Koshevoy was the most active in the KoMs early on and goes into 4th with 16 points now followed by Lilovski in 5th.
Bystrom at 32 points though is pretty safe if Barbin or Mugisha won`t surprise in todays finale.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0336.jpg

Is Gjensidige planning something today? Eiking might not be the very best option on a longer climb but he has to show something clearly after stage 1. Then we also have Colombini, Los Pollos or Trans Looney Tunes in the chasing work with just 10km to go. 1min gap to the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0349.jpg

The break is on the climb. Can they keep the gap and surprise the favourites? It`s a small gap only but also a short climb only.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0351.jpg

Paillot is nicely placed in the first rows, so is Kung for Jura GIANTS and Gjensidige still working a lot alongside Colombini.

Checking the positioning today we see the high GC riders mainly in a good position with small changes to day 1:
- Jura GIANTS not really playing their GC advantage well as they seem to go all-in for Kung with both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Darbellay and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Masnada not ideally placed.
- Same goes to a much bigger shock for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Faglum Karlsson, who is not ideally placed in the 2nd half of the group around decently placed riders pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Abreu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/see.png Reguigui, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Osorio and meanwhile Fastned is mixing it again. Today the stronger climber and better placed GC rider with chances for a top10-15 pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Vanhoucke is riding alongside 5 team mates in the very last position, while Vansevenant is up there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0366.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Vink is the strongest it seems. He has gapped all others with Koshevoy and Lilovski following. Then in single groups Bernas, Lammertink and Lazkano. But the peloton of still 170 riders is in total just 70s behind and 3 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0369.jpg

Not bad to have a luxury domestique such as Bagioli. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png McNulty really wants to set up a higher pace now and is behind his team mate in 2nd position.
Well placed then right behind Barbio as 4th in the GC next wo Villella and also Sicard and Goos moving up with Kung and Paillot in 15th position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0374.jpg

1,1km and Vink is the last man standing. Though with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png McNulty now accelerating it`s unlikely the Air NZ rider can keep it up for much longer.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Meurisse next to McNulty seems to have a nice day here.

Bystrom, Villella, Sicard, Goos, Barbio, Errazkin next.

Where are the hybrids Higuita, Teuns, Chaves or the other GC riders?
Barta, Uwizeyimana or Main in 15th position fighting for their top10 chances. Then Eiking, Waeytens and Vansevenant, who only could go for the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0391.jpg

Paillot and Kung slowly struggling and must hope there won`t be any gaps today!
With them other riders, you would expect a bit further up such as Teuns, Aular, Kuss, Pidcock, Izagirre.

And then there are Masnada, Darbellay or Faglum Karlsson even further behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0402.jpg

600 m and McNulty attacking again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0405.jpg

This time there clearly are some gaps opening. A big one after 64 riders, which means, the earlier mentioned riders in bad position are likely to lose time! But also in hte first group 1-2 gaps are opening and might see some bigger GC movement.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0414.jpg

McNulty still strongest but the gap to Meurisse and Sicard not really widening. Will it be enough for him?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0417.jpg

Paillot in danger now as time bonuses for the win might be enough for McCormick`s leader.
Just like Kung he is in the middle of the first group and should hope to avoid any more gaps ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0419.jpg

No question. Deserved win for McNulty. Surely the best today and he might change white to yellow after this stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0421.jpg

Then a small surprise. Experience wins! No other than veteran Sicard takes 2nd here ahead of Meurisse.
Then Higuita out of nowhere in the late phase of todays stage up to 4th ahead of another veteran in Goos!
They are given a 8s gap, so clearly the GC winner will be McNulty!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0424.jpg

Uwizeyimana as best for Bralirwa coming in 6th and is given the same time as Sicard and with Barbio, Badilatti, Gu Jang, Errazkin, Main and Bagioli in that group GC wise Barbio might go up to 2nd even as there is a gap behind them!

Also big news for Goos and Main alongside Sicard or Uwizeyimana as they gain time here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/Hkg/mg23_hkg_03_PCM0426.jpg

Paillot and Kung are actually another group behind and are ranked +37s today alongside Dall'Oste or Osorio. Losing the GC yes, but staying up there in 3rd and 6th GC wise is surely nothing bad at all and might even be higher than hoped pre race.

The group in between at +19 includes couple of highly ranked GC riders such as Barta, Izagirre, Pidcock as also the puncheurs Chaves, Teuns, Bystrom, Waeytens, Eiking, Vansevenant, Müller, which have lost the race earlier or Aular, who couldn`t take profit from his climbing skills today.

Dropping in the GC today due to losing more than 1-2 minutes are the Jura duo Darbellay/Masnada out of the top20 just like Abreu, Faglum Karlsson, Xandri or Reguigui and Vanhoucke.
Some surely could have done better today when being played as clear co-leader. Some teams at least got one of their riders into a high GC, while others didn`t really had a smart tactic.
