Tour of Qatar
Stage 6 is 3.9k TT where the prologue specialists get to strut their stuff.
Soren Kragh Andersen is the favorite. If he wins it will be his 3rd consecutive win in the IT stage of this race. Among the riders who have taken bonus seconds only Kemboi is on the favorites list. None of the four riders ahead of him on GC are great in the TTs but GC leader Philipsen has a healthy 29 second edge. Last year Kemboi gained just 8 seconds in the epilogue on Gaviria. And Gaviria is only slightly stronger than the Yellow Jersey in this discipline.
Only 4 riders have lost time through this race, every rider from 32nd to 187th sits 1’04 off the pace, so a strong ride today can move you well up in the GC.
Tanfield is the first serious competitor on the course and he sets the best time of 4’36. But he is one of the riders who has lost time so he won’t be a threat overall.
Yatsevich goes 1 second better. He takes over the stage and virtual GC lead.
Another Tinkoff rider, Goldstein moves into 2nd, 1 second behind his teammate. Soon after Dal Col takes over 4th (+2 seconds) and Vorobev slots into 5th, 6 seconds down. 4 of the top 5 for Tinkoff right now, but still a lot of riders to come. Last year Tinkoff threw away the team’s competition when they all missed a split on Stage 5, this year they didn’t make that mistake.
Viennet (+0, 2nd best), Thomas (+1), Bjerg (+1), Krul (+2), Pelikan (+3) and Cheung (+3) all put in solid times reducing Tinkoff’s domination to 3 of the top 10.
But Russian Champion Zakarin comes in 5th, 1 second down taking Tinkoff back to 4 in the top 10 and 3 in the top 5. But 150 riders still to come.
Lammertink and Christodoulos both go 1 second off the best time, the Dutchman slightly stronger, he takes over 5th.
Current top 5 are Yatsevich, Viennet, Goldstein, Tanfield and Lammertink.
Hansen matches Yatsevich and Viennet’s time but sits in 3rd.
British champion Hayter joins them soon afterwards. He is the new third.
Chavanne is the first of the prologue specialists on the course. He takes over the lead 3 seconds ahead of Yatsevich
Hepburn also joins the top 10, 3 seconds behind the leader in 4th place. But he drops back 1 as Groselj finishes slightly better to take over 4th.
86 riders left to finish and the favorite, Soren Kragh Andersen, is on the course. Can he win this stage for a 3rd consecutive time?
And the preliminary time is that he is fractions ahead of Chavanne.
Howson takes over third 3 seconds off the pace. Cedevita now look the strongest team with 2 in the top 6 and 4 in the top 20.
Dennis takes over 3rd from Howson but on the same time.
A few riders later it is Ganna.
He finishes on the same time as Chavanne and Andersen but 2nd on the leaderboard at the moment.
Larsen takes over 4th, 2 seconds off the pace.
Durbridge is Amaysim’s big hope.
He is the new 4th, 2 seconds off the pace.
That doesn’t last long as Leung finishes soon afterwards and is the new 4th place, 1 second behind the podium trio.
Greek Champion Vlatos finishes 7th, tied with Howon and Dennis 3 seconds off the best times.
There are 32 riders left to finish as Campenaerts is on the course. He is the first rider with bonus seconds to start, if he can finish within a second of the best time he would take over the GC lead.
The Stage leader board looks like this:
Campenaerts does not take the GC lead, he loses 5 seconds, only good enough for 26th on the stage.
Waerenskjold looks sharp in the Young Rider jersey. He was second in that competition at the start of the day. He loses 16 seconds.
Scotson had 4 bonus seconds coming in, he finishes 5 seconds off the pace, he will do well on GC.
Keough is next, he won’t repeat Holloway’s feat of winning this race but he finishes 3 second behind the leader in 7th on the stage. He had 6 bonus seconds to start the day, he is the new GC leader.
Ahlstrand finishes next and loses 17 seconds, 14 seconds worse than Keough. That is a good reference point for the gap between Kemboi and Philipsen. It seems a good omen for the Polar rider who leads by 29 seconds over the Kenyan and 17 seconds over Gaviria.
Ewan finishes 14 seconds down, he had only 11 bonus seconds coming in and will be lucky to be in the top 20, a disappointing race for him.
Coquard next, he will hope to take over the virtual GC lead although he is unlikely to hold it to the end.
He loses 4 seconds, 13th on the day, but enough to give him the virtual GC lead when combined with his 13 bonus seconds.
It doesn’t last long, Enger finishes next, he is 6 seconds off the pace but just two seconds behind Coquard. He had 3 more bonus seconds; he is the new virtual leader. Still 14 riders to finish.
Silvestre is the next rider with a shot at the virtual GC lead. He had a 4 second edge on Enger at the start of the day. He loses 4 seconds to the Cedevita man in the epilogue. The finish order will depend on the fractions.
But it won’t be decisive in terms of the race as Asbjorn Kragh Andersen goes ahead of them both. He loses 11 seconds to the stage leader but had 25 bonus seconds coming in. He is the new virtual GC leader, a great start to the year for Carlsberg wherever he ends up on GC.
Grosu just does enough to take over the virtual GC. He loses 7 seconds to Kragh Andersen in the epilogue but started the day with an 8 second advantage. 6 riders left.
Cullaigh finishes in 132nd on the day 23 seconds behind the leader (still Soren Kragh Andersen) more than enough to drop him behind both Grosu and Asbjorn Kragh Andersen on GC. Kemboi is next.
He can’t win the stage, he is 1 second off the pace, 5th place. But he is well ahead in the virtual GC.
Van der Lijke loses 22 seconds he drops behind Grosu and Kragh Andersen. While Jakobsen loses 20 seconds, 19 to Kemboi, he only had a 9 second advantage to start the day, he is 2nd on GC at the moment.
Gaviria next. He needs to finish less 12 seconds behind Kemboi to take the virtual GC lead.
17 seconds down on the leader, 16 on Kemboi, Gaviria won’t win the 2023 Tour of Qatar.
Only the Yellow Jersey left on the course. He has the Young Rider and Points jersey’s won, can he add the GC? He can afford to lose 28 seconds to Kemboi.
He cuts it a little close, 23 seconds down, but he holds on for the win. A great race for Philipsen and Polar as the youngest sprinter proves the best. Kemboi repeats his 2020 finish of 2nd place while Gaviria scores his 3rd consecutive podium although he has yet to stand on the top step. The same two finish second and third on points.
Soren Kragh Andersen is confirmed as the stage winner for the 3rd time in the Qatar ITT. He finishes 16th on GC.
Despite the early fireworks for Tinkoff and Cedevita it is MOL who takes the team jersey with their collection of prologue specialists.
