Tour Down Under
Stage 5
Unley - Mount Lofty
113.8km
Possibly the most challenging stage of the race, the peloton will climb Mount Lofty 5 times in quick succession, starting with an elongated accent on the first passage leaving Unley. This should be a stage for the climbers and puncheurs with almost no flat kilometers the whole way. Expect GC gaps as the climbers try to drop the pure sprinters. There will be lots of mountain points up for grabs today so a change of jersey could be in order.
Garibian is the first to jump away from the peloton on the lowest slopes of Mount Lofty as they conquer this stage. No one jumps with immediately and a 30 second gap opens up between the peloton and Garibian.
After a kilometer or two, the responses begin. First, Van Heerden and Blouwe break from the peloton. As the distance creates more opportunity, Bechkov follows in his own group. Quickly following, Ramirez, McKenna, and Scheit are the final riders to emerge from the main group. With 5km to go in the climb these are all separate groups. A final grouping of Katrasnik, Van Dijke (M) and Barbero escape.
It’s been a brutal breakaway formation and as they top, Van Heerden leads for top points with Garibian in 2nd and Blouwe 3rd. McKenna, Scheit, and Barbero all catch Bechkov as they crest with the remaining points going to McKenna and Scheit - 50 seconds behind the leading threesome. Ramirez, Van Dijke and Katrasnik are just behind, but not established yet. Van Heerden’s 10 points means that any accumulation of points on the remaining climbs could easily hand him the jersey.
The trio maintain their gap on the descent and do not contest the sprint point. Blouwe paces through in first ahead of Van Heerden and Garibian. They still sit 35 seconds in front of the chasers and the peloton sits 3:10 back already. As the road goes up again before the 2nd half of the descent, the back 7 come together as one and then finally the ten combine forces with 92km to go.
The pace is calm all the way until 1km to go in the climb, where Garibian attacks early followed by Blouwe and Van Heerden. As the earliest attackers on the day and on this climb, its clear they are the most interested in the KoM points today. Blouwe sprints around his competitors in a tight battle for the 6 points, leaving the Simba Cement – Tanga Fresh rider for 2nd. Garibian earns 3rd place. The pace in the peloton has increased this climb though, dropping the gap as low as 2:00. They must’ve learned from two early breakaway successes that they can’t give them too much time.
With 65km to go, its the Swiss champion Spengler doing the pacing, ahead of riders from DK Zalgiris, Podium Ambition, McCormick Pro Cycling, and DuckDuckGo - Everesting and the gap is approximately 2:15. They’re all contributing now to keep the gap manageable but the breakaway shows no signs of giving up. With 55km to go, Assa Abloy joins the teams at the front of the peloton just in time for the 3rd ascent of Mount Lofty.
The 1km to go banner is Garibian’s sign to attack again for the KoM points, but Blouwe is right beside him. McKenna sits in 3rd position with Scheit and Van Heerden the others showing real interest.
This time, Blouwe grabs the points again. McKenna fought hard through the line and likely would’ve come out on top if the line was 5 meters farther. Garibian takes another 2 as he nickels and dimes his points. Blouwe is now at 18 points, Van Heerden at 14 and Garibian at 12 in the KoM standings, placing Blouwe in the virtual lead with one climb remaining. 51km to go and the gap is 2:20.
Again, there’s no sprint for the intermediate point and McKenna leads the group through. Garibian and Van Heerden earn the other spots and they’ve opened the gap to 2:45. Ramirez, Katrasnik and Bechkov have barely worked in this breakaway so far nor have they reaped any rewards for being in the front. It’ll be interesting to see their tactics if they can find ways to be useful for their managers.
At the base of the penultimate climb, the peloton is working very hard. Assa Abloy pushed the descent and have handed the pace over to Podium Ambition as the road turns up. They’re definitely expecting a fast final 30km as Demare has moved up into 5th wheel while Varga sits two wheels behind him. Bobridge is also nearby as well as Moscon and Turgis in the first 15 wheels of the peloton. The frantic pace has created a split in the pack as has been trademark of the Australian hills this week. The gap is small, but it will be tough to move up over 100 positions for anyone there to find a way to the front. The only major puncheur in that group appears to be Yates and Serrano although they have other leaders in the front.
The ascent of Mount Lofty has yet again been pedestrian, with no major attacks until the final meters. It’s a photo finish between the two most combative of the day in Blouwe and McKenna. Even though McKenna nipped him in the photo, Blouwe takes the KoM jersey at today’s conclusion. Van Heerden takes 3rd. Behind in the peloton, the gap is actually increasing to 1:50 as the domestiques cannot hold a high pace for long. Mostov pushed hard and then got left on the front for McCormick Pro Cycling without anyone to take over, lowering the peloton’s momentum. Finally, Kvist took over and is suffering the same fate.
It’s 20km to go and the breakaway is still pushing their lead up to 2:00. Katrasnik has joined those pacing, but the trio of Ramirez, Van Dijke and Bechkov still haven’t lifted a pedal stroke in anger. Maybe, just maybe, they’ll have the strength to overtake the others in the final. Caja Rural Cycling Team will also be looking at each other to see how they can use their duo to maximize their winning chances.
In the peloton, 78 riders remain, led by Frankovic and Simmons. Both DK Zalgiris and McCormick Pro Cycling must be hoping to finally find some success with Moscon and the duo of Bagioli/ Narvaez respectively since they haven’t found the podium. The GC teams don’t seem quite as interested in bringing the group back together with Katrasnik the top GC rider up from 3:29 back. White is similarly helping for Podium Ambition.
The group paces as normal for the penultimate 10 km, leaving the front men 1:45 in front. They’re single file now with Barbero forced to work in support of Scheit. Katrasnik and McKenna sit closest to the front with the typical trio continuing their free wheeling on the back.
With the peloton under the same banner, Matsumoto leads the pack for Assa Abloy in support of Gesbert who also needs to a strong result today. They’ll need to crush this climb to make any real progress and even then, it’s unclear whether the entire breakaway can be caught.
Ramirez has given it his all today, but he begins to fall off the pace with 7km to go and the Caja Rural Cycling Team duo is pushing the pace. The other nine leaders still seem strong. Team Popo4Ever p/b Morshynska now leads the peloton to defend the GC lead of Varga and potentially give Budyak a strong stage result.
The leading breakaway continues to disintegrate! Van Dijke, Bechkov, and Van Heerden all lose contact right under the 5km to go banner while the other 6 stay strong. Barbero and Scheit both look strong still while McKenna has been quiet since the last climb. Blouwe seems more unsettled but is still present and poised to attack. Garibian and Katrasnik are the toughest to read.
3.2 km to go and Barbero can no longer pace. He returns to the back of the group and remains in contact, but only because the race grinds to a halt without him pushing the tempo. Scheit phantom paces with his teammate at the back.
Ramirez is caught by the peloton, allowing a slightly greater chance of success with 3km to go for the main group of 53 who have also cut the gap in half over 1.5km. Gladysh is leading that group with Stannard the best positioned of the pre-stage top 10. Everyone in those top 10 slots is still present in the pack, looking strong.
Scheit is still stuck on the front of the lead pack with no signs of anyone offering assistance. Barbero has moved up to 3rd position but both he and Blouwe look to have no punch left unless they’re trying to mask their energy. McKenna has not shown signs of weakness nor has Katrasnik or Garibian. They’ve only got 32 seconds on the peloton though and the 3 dropped riders are being swallowed by the emerging mass of riders.
Stannard is first to jump of any of the favorites followed by teammate Arndt as they lead the group up the slopes. Mosca looks most prepared to cover the gap alongside Gladysh who has worked tirelessly for Team Popo the entire tour. Bobridge is most poised of the top 10 favorites with Turgis (and domestique Meurisse), Varga and Demare still close to the front. Müller and Moscon are also present alongside Gesbert.
Just 500m later and the gap is all but gone. Scheit seems to up the temp of the leaders as they realize they’re almost caught and McKenna seems ready to follow. Stannard is still pushing hard with Arndt following. Meurisse has ushered Turgis into 5th position and Bobridge again stays prepared to pounce.
Just as the breakaway gap is bridge, Scheit and McKenna do manage to get away in the confusion, reestablishing 10 seconds over Garibian and Katrasnik, who hold just 5 seconds over the peloton. Arndt has jumped around Stannard and opened into his full sprint as has Müller. Moscon sits patiently with the Lampre - Pinarello duo and Demare prepped for a sprint finish.
Scheit is away solo and has clear air all the way to the line. McKenna is dropped and Katrasnik is holding on dearly for third but Demare is absolutely rocketing toward the front. Moscon and Turgis are also ready to make a run for the podium here. The rest of the peloton is spread without any official gaps, but as a hilly finish, the smallest opening could be the difference between same time and a minute deficit.
Scheit is almost there with just 200m to go and he’s got 15 seconds over Demare who has stomped past the remaining breakaway riders with no one even attempting to cover the move. The gap looks too big even for the superstar, but he might be able to close the distance enough not to lose time. McKenna refuses to quit in 3rd and Katrasnik has held off the rest of the peloton so far. Gesbert is position in 7th, but sprinting strongly while Moscon and Turgis are struggling to maintain pace.
It’s another breakaway win, this time for Caja Rural Cycling Team! Scheit holds off the rest of the breakaway and the peloton to take the victory on top of Mount Lofty!
Demare is an easy 2nd which should catapult him into the GC lead unless Varga or Haller have been able to climb out of their mind. Again, the gaps behind are still not fully established so it will take a look at the final results to see the differences.
The final podium spot for the day goes to Moscon who will surely jump up from 17th position today. Turgis lands a strong 4th while McKenna earns a solid result in 5th after the heartbreak of his breakaway defeat. Gesbert lands in 6th, Beltran 7th, Meurisse 8th, Arndt 9th and Müller 10th. Bobridge, Bol, Vesely and Stannard all land in the top 20 in what should be the same time as 3rd at least and potentially Demare.
The next major contenders to cross the line are Haller, Varga, and Van der Sande who much prefer the flat and have held their own today. They land around 28th and should be distanced in the time by eye alone – then again it is only the clock and gap-makers who count in that regard. Wippert lands himself about 2:18 back as the final member of the prestage top 10 .
Scheit relishes a victory on top of the podium and we see the first gaps to others.
Demare barely takes the top spot on the leaderboard with 1 second over Varga who must have remained on same time. Demare also earns the points jersey. Stannard stays in white again while Blouwe earned himself top step for the polka dot after strong work in the breakaway.
A closer look at the results show Haller, Varga, and Van der Sande doing just enough to hold onto the 3rd place group and defend their GC positions ahead of stage six.
