Stage 3 Report

Tour of Qatar Stage 3 might seem familiar to you, 144k, 2 sprint points and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Gaviria heads the favorites list.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/favs.jpg

Tougher fight for the break today. With 20k gone pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Potts and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Tanfield have 1’18 with frequent flyer pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Resell 32 seconds behind them. Others still attacking from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/01.jpg

90k to go, no others were allowed to escape so the break of the day is Tanfield, Potts and Resell. They have 3’33. With Grosu no longer in the leader’s jersey it is left mainly to Moser (Nommela, Atkins, Turek) to chase

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/02.jpg

At the first sprint with 84k to go Tanfield edges Potts. Resell only able to gain 1 bonus second, he was 10th in GC at the start of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/03.jpg

Potts wins the 2nd sprint, Resell again only 3rd. Peloton at 2’02 with 60k to go. Tanfield is a pretty good Prologue rider so the bonus seconds could help him in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/04.jpg

23k to go, the break leads by 51 seconds. While ISA-Hexacta and ELCO have had riders near the front most of the day, the chasing has almost solely been done by Moser, including by lead out man pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Bogdanovics. Now Minions (Barbier) and ZARA (Castrillo) have come to the front to help.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/05.jpg

13k to go and the catch is made as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Mraouni helps out the Moser boys.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/06.jpg

2.8k to go, lead outs for Moser, ISA-Hexacta and ELCO are all fighting for position. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/elc.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan can’t afford a repeat of yesterday. Each of the top sprinters is in 3rd wheel for his team. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Kanter furthest forward among the rest of the sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/07.jpg

2k to go. On the right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Gaviria just has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Bogdanovics left in front of him. In the middle it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Baska and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Santos for ISA-Hexacta with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan a little further back. On the left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/elc.png Farantakis is the last man left for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/elc.png Coquard. Grosu is on Gaviria’s wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Kemboi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Jakobsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke fighting for Ewan’s wheel. The big name missing today is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Philipsen who is just out of the picture and has ground to make up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/08.jpg

1.3k to go and Gaviria into the wind, his strength will be tested today. Grosu and Kanter behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/09.jpg

800 meters, Gaviria has a big gap still. Behind the next four are Coquard, Kanter, Grosu and Ewan.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/10.jpg

600 meters, Gaviria is dying now, Coquard almost past him. Next are Kanter, Ewan and Van der Lijke. A big group behind them, from left to right: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Silvestre, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Jakobsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Keough, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Ahlstrand, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Philipsen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Enger pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Prasad, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov just behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/11.jpg

300 meters, Coquard out front but he is fading. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke coming fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/12.jpg

200 meters for Coquard, Van der Lijke almost up to him but Philipsen is flying now, he had to make up a ton of ground to be involved in the sprint. Cullaigh also moving fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/13.jpg

100 meters, Cullaigh into first. Philipsen just behind him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Kemboi with a late charge on the far left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh wins stage 3 with a beautifully timed late rush.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Philipsen 2nd, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Kemboi. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/elc.png Coquard holds on for fourth ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/16.jpg

It is tight for 6th through 9th but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Enger edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Jakobsen 8th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Silvestre 9th. A late burst from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Groenewegen nets 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S3/17.jpg

The other teams left Moser to do the work today and they ran out of resources leaving Gaviria exposed in the sprint. He drops to 2nd on GC, 3 seconds behind the new leader, Philipsen, who also leads White ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Waerenskjold. Cullaigh moves up to 3rd on GC ahead of Grosu and Kemboi, Kemboi is best placed of the top prologue riders. Phillipsen also has the points jersey ahead of the same two riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Resell loses contact with the peloton so his breakaway escapades will go for nought on GC.
