Tour Down Under
Stage 4
Port Willunga - Willunga
134.9km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/01.jpg

One of the flattest overall stages of the tour, we’ll see a final accent in Willunga to test the puncheurs and maybe even some of the sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/02.jpg

Our first attack contains pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Turner and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Uhlig (our last place man on GC). They’re closely followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Matte and attacks continue from throughout the peloton ensuring that break formation is not easy. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Turner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Uhlig, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis are able to counter some additional attacks, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Matte brings a group of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Hessmann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Juneau to join the front men. This six succeeds without question while a few minor attacks from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Lagane in the peloton are thwarted easily and he concedes the group ahead is established. 20km in and the gap is 2:45.

The peloton does not seem concerned about this group at all, as the closest on GC is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis on over 4 minutes and no one has points in the sprint or KoM classifications. WIth 100km to go, the gap is up to 4:15. It’s tough to call the peloton “pacing” but those duties have fallen to Tryg-Gobyk. DK Zalgiris and Team Popo4Ever p/b Morshynska are also pulling through occasionally.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/05.jpg

Another circuit, the race approaches Willunga for the first climb and first look at the finish. The KoM point is about 300m from the finish, so the riders will know how to pace their climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis is the first to attack at the 1km in the climb to go banner and is successful in taking the 5 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Juneau gains the points for 2nd while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Uhlig earns 3rd and a single point. The gap to the peloton is still 4:13 and there’s 81km to the finish. UBS-Tissot has joined the groups willing to put someone on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Turner leads the group into the sprint point but cycles off the front allowing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Uhlig to take the points and the seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Matte and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Juneau take the remaining spots with no attempt from anyone. The gap has descended to 3:40 with 66km to go. We’ll see if there are more attacks as the riders now attempt the 2nd circuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/07.jpg

The peloton is starting to show their interest as they approach 50km to the finish. In the past few kilometers, DK Zalgiris, Adidas-Eurocash, Team Popo4Ever p/b Morshynska, and UBS-Tissot have all contributed on the front. They bring the gap to 2:55 without too much effort and the short climb up to Willunga approaches. Cooperation in both groups is consistent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis tried a 1km attack again for the second climb and challenged for the win, but was not as definitive as the first time around. He still manages to grab the points, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Turner fought him all the way to the line and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Juneau grabbed the 3rd spot. The gap is down to 2:30 even though they all pushed to the line. The peloton does allow the gap back to 3:00 as they finish the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/09.jpg

The front group is simply not interested in the sprint points and allow themselves to just roll over the line again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Turner takes the points this time with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Juneau and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Uhlig taking the remaining. No matter the finish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Juneau should be much happier with today’s breakaway than the previous. The peloton is now pushing to secure the victory though as they trail by only 1:44. There’s a few smaller groups off the back of the peloton from the tiny descent, but no major players. One group comes back to put the peloton at 147 with some still remaining behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/10.jpg

Back to the front and the six leaders are trying their best but it doesn’t look good for the breakaway. It’s just a minute to the GC leaders and the tough climb should remove any chance of survival. At the peloton, a group of 9 has opened a tiny gap, but it is closed before it even opens. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Matte makes an attempt to leave the breakaway behind but he also can’t separate and the gap is still there at 10km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Uhlig is the next man to think he may have better success in a smaller group and he drags pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Hessmann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Juneau away from the other three. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis brings them back within the kilometer though and the 6 are back together. Somehow, they’ve opened up the gap to 1:28 and may now have a real shot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/12.jpg

The peloton is not pushing hard with 5km to go for the leaders. UBS-Tissot is controlling with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Van Asbroeck, but the gap is extending. 3.5km to go and the gap is 1:35 still. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Van Asbroeck pacing alone. The breakaway is all pulling through still, except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Uhlig who sits at the back. Everyone except the breakaway is now in the peloton with no groups left behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis is at the front as they enter the final 2km. The order behind him is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Hessmann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Matte, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Juneau, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Turner, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Uhlig. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Matte should probably be the favorite in this group, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis has earned all the mountain points. The official climb to the finish is tougher with an extended 350m that can reach 10% gradients.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis opens up the final attack again and everyone follows. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Uhlig is the only one to leave the slipstream as he attempts to gain positions before the road turns left and uphill. Quickly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Turner and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Uhlig are left behind with 800m to go and the race is on for the other 4.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/16.jpg

Unlike the previous accents, the riders are now heading to the second line which Ekoi – Le Creuset will be reminding pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis from the team car so he can utilize his energy efficiently. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Hessmann is ready to pounce while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Juneau and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Matte are hoping the front two truly mistimed their attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis seems to be falling back with 300m to go as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Hessmann takes the lead through the KoM banner from the previous attempts, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis is clearly not dead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Juneau and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Matte however has sat down and don’t appear to have any kick left to the finish. Behind in the peloton, the GC leaders are lining up for the finish, but no attacks have occurred.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare has jumped as the road goes up! He realizes that there are still bonus seconds even for 7th and the other puncheurs also want a crack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga is here to defend the GC lead and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Turgis is well positioned in the bunch. They can see the breakaway ahead but shouldn’t be able to catch any of them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/19.jpg

With the attacks coming behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Hessmann are battling to the line. After slipping behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis finds an extra bit and celebrates as he crosses the line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Hessmann is right there for 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Juneau holds on for 3rd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Matte for 4th with a small gap to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/20.jpg

The battle for 5th is much more complicated than it appeared, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Turner does find his way to the line and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Uhlig also manages 6th but by only a hair over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Dzamastagic who earns his 2nd top 10 in as many stages. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare comes home for 8th and the spark duo of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png McCormick close out the top 10! The remaining riders in the peloton comes through together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S4/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eko.png Karatsivis is the daily champion! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga remains in the GC lead with 21 seconds over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Haller. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Uhiriwe has maintained the climbing classification without worry today, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare regains the sprint classification in the tightest battle of the standings. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Stannard remains the best young rider.
