Stage 1 Report

Welcome to Stage 1 of the 2023 Tour of Qatar. The PT sprinters will try and get their teams off to a hot start (hot, get what I did there, we’re in the . . . desert).

The stage today goes from Barzan Towers to Doha Golf Club and covers 144.5k, there are two sprint points.

The stage favorites are all the riders you would expect. The organizers put pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Gaviria as the #1 favorite today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/favs.jpg

10k gone, two youngsters off the front in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/grm.png Waerenskjold and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Vandevelde. They have 49 seconds. Others have tried to join them but Moser, ELCO and ISA-Hexacta are working to keep the break small.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/01.jpg

5k to the first sprint point which will come with 111k to ride and the two leaders have 2’22 on the peloton. After shutting down numerous attacks the peloton has allowed a 3-rider group including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Scotson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Durbridge. and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Resell to get a gap, they are 57 seconds behind the leading duo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/02.jpg

The 5 come together before the sprint and Resell wins it ahead of Waerenskjold and Scotson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/03.jpg

80k to go, Moser, ELCO and ISA-Hexacta controlling the chase. The breaks lead maxed at 3’40 and is currently at 2’54.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/04.jpg

At the 2nd sprint point Scotson takes it easily ahead of Resell and Vandevelde. The lead is 2’11 with 59k to ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/05.jpg

20k to go for the peloton, Moser and ISA-Hexacta leading the chase, the break has just 42 seconds left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Ovsyannikov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Andersen also very near the front. In the break Resell has just launched the first attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/06.jpg

5.6k to go and the break is over. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Mraouni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Andersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Santos, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Baska leading the way. Unfortunately pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan is not on their wheel but is further back on the right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Gaviria is near the front but has just pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Bogdanovics left with him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/elc.png Coquard is tucked in just behind Gaviria and still has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/elc.png Koumpetsos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/elc.png Farantakis.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/07.jpg

2.7k to go the ELCO train has launched on the right. In the middle Ewan has found Santos’ wheel but 2.7k is a long way to go with only one rider. Gaviria has dropped back into the pack chasing the ISA-Hexacta riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/08.jpg

1.7k to go Farantakis in the wind now with Coquard on his wheel. Bogdanovics is next to Farantakis, but perhaps wisely Gaviria is sheltering much further back in his Colombian National Champions jersey. Ewan’s lead out is done and he is on Coquard’s wheel. Behind from left to right are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Kemboi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gzl.png Lander and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Jakobsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/09.jpg

1k banner, Bogdanovics is on the front, Farantakis still leading out Coquard just behind. Gaviria is making up ground on the right with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke just behind him. On the left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen has made a dash forward.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/10.jpg

600 meters, Kragh Andersen has the lead. Coquard in the wind now, is sprinting next to Gaviria on the other side with Enger and Van der Lijke just behind them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov has grabbed Kragh Andersen’s wheel with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan just behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/11.jpg

300 meters pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Gaviria has his nose in front, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/elc.png Coquard almost even with him, Enger and Van der Lijke need to find a lane if they are going to move up. Kragh Andersen seems to be fading in the center. Grosu and Samolenkov are catching him on the left. The next row behind those mentioned includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Kemboi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/isa.png Ewan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Jakobsen, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Philipsen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/12.jpg

200 meters, Gaviria, showing his toughness, is still out front. Coquard is fading. Grosu and Van der Lijke also look strong.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/13.jpg

100 meters, Grosu has caught Gaviria.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/rab.png Grosu wins stage 1 of the Tour of Qatar. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mos.png Gaviria a brave second. Third stage win in this race for the Romanian. He has also won the GC once and the points jersey three times.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Groenewegen is best among the PCT riders and completes the podium. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke takes 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Philipsen, who will wear the best young rider jersey tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/PT/Qatar/S1/16.jpg

The second half of the top 10 are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/akm.png Prasad, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ldl.png Kemboi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/elc.png Coquard.
