Stage 2
Norwood-Campbelltown
116.9km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/01.jpg

Another short stage in Australia as we head to Campbelltown with Corkscrew Hill in the final kilometers. This could be a route for the sprinters or the punchers, with the game suggesting pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare as the most likely to end on top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/03.jpg

It’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Fisher-Black in the white jersey leading the breakaway formation again, followed closely by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Selimovic. The road heads uphill almost immediately making it easy for the attackers to create some separation. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Buratti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Uhiriwe are the second group of attackers after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Fisher-Black and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Selimovic already gained a minute on the climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Puccio follows closely after them in group 3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png Wade, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Stoenchev tried to bridge, but instead everyone but the front two are back in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/05.jpg

With the leading duo almost 2 minutes ahead, more attacks see themselves out of the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Buratti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga combine forces for an attack which is quickly followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Puccio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Stoenchev. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Ramirez also joins them, the only attacker not in the original attacks. Podium Ambition brings back the latter 3, but leave the 2nd duo to bridge to the front and establish the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Selimovic had no desire to allow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Fisher-Black full points at the top of Ashton hill, the beginning climb of the day that started after just 1km in the parcours. At the top, the two lead the 2nd group by a minute. They don’t fight for the last spot as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga takes those points. After cresting, there’s still a minute to the front but 2 additional minutes to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/07.jpg

The four leaders come together around 98.5km to go after a tough chase for the back two. Together the lead is now 3:30 over the peloton lead by DK Zalgiris, Adidas - Eurocash and Tryg -Gobyk. Over the undulations before the 1st sprint point, the gap drops to 3:00 even.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga shows himself as the strongest on the flat with an incredible kick to the line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Buratti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Selimovic are able to hold on for the minor placings and close the gap as the road rose to the line, but could not overtake the Hungarian. At least, that was the appearance on first glance, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Buratti has been given the victory at intermediate 1, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Selimovic 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Fisher-Black easily returned to the group after the sprint, but could not add to his young rider lead. As they ride along the plateau, the gap extends to 4:00 over the peloton and stabilizes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/09.jpg

The race continues without much worry from 75km to go until they approach the 2nd sprint point with 52km to go. The gap has descended to around 2:30, but that pacing has been gradual with a few more teams adding to the front in the likes of Lampre - Pinarello, Trans Looney Tunes and Podium Ambition. Still, at the sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga tries the same strategy and accelerates at 1km to go to establish a gap and wins again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Selimovic is overtaken at the line for 2nd with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Buratti sliding in for the 2 bonus seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Buratti earning 5 bonus seconds will slot him above pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Fisher-Black for the white jersey as long as the finish line bonus seconds don’t change the outcome.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/10.jpg

With 40 km to go, the peloton is maintaining the gap around 2:00-2:15 and dropping. At this point, the breakaway attempts to tackle Checker Hill without losing too much time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Selimovic is the first to jump for the KoM points with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Fisher-Black close behind. He must realize that by losing the white jersey, he may still have a way to wear a jersey in stage 3 by overtaking the polka dots.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/12.jpg

Alas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Fisher-Black loses contact in the sprint to the line and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Buratti pushes a massive burst to go from 4th to 1st in the final 250m of the climb. It’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Buratti, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Selimovic, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga together to take the points. They do not slow down to allow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Fisher-Black on but he manages to pull himself back to the front slowly. They all hold 2:00 minutes on the peloton with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Fisher-Black dangling at about 20 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/13.jpg

A group has fallen behind the peloton after Checker Hill with potential to return to the main grouping. It is led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Scully, who will be hoping to make it to the finish line for a potential sprinter. No other clear leaders have fallen back but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Uhiriwe is also in this group. A group of 16 are even further back. Their gap is almost 2:30 to the front of the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/anz.png Scully does just enough to lead his group back but there are more undulations to come and gaps will open and close over the hilltops.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Fisher-Black could never fully reestablish himself and sadly returns to the peloton at 22km to go with the leading trio just 1:20 ahead. Leading the peloton are now Kraftwerk Man Machine to defend pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Haller’s leader’s jersey with Fastned and McCormick Pro Cycling now adding to the troops of DK Zalgiris who were helping earlier. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png De Buyst is furious at the front to lower the gap to 1:00 at the bottom of Corkscrew.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/15.jpg

It is still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png De Buyst leading the peloton under the 10km to go banner and the 3 leaders are furiously trying to crest the Corkscrew. The gap is 600m and 1:04 seconds with 2.8km to go until the descent to the line. A steep 2.2km climb, there should be gaps if riders are not near the front of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/16.jpg

The trio are not giving up! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga is attacking on the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Selimovic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Buratti able to hold the wheel. Behind, the fight is on with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png De Buyst still attacking on the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Bol and Stocker have appeared for Jura near the front alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Pons for Podium Ambition. It is mostly sprinters at the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gesbert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Bobridge, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare the major exceptions in the first 20 spots of the peloton.

500m to go in the climb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Selimovic has reached his limit. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Buratti bridges to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga as they both struggle to maintain their composure. The gap to those two is down just a few seconds, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png De Buyst has not been able to close the lead much. With 6km of descent to the line, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Buratti should have a good shout if they can crest with a lead of 30 seconds or more.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga gaps pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Buratti with 300m left in the climb and leads the full field over the line. With 33 seconds over the peloton it will surely be close. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Buratti is caught by the peloton (as is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Selimovic) but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Buratti still gains 2nd place at the KoM followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Pons, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gesbert, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/crc.png Quevedo. With 14 points each on the day, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Buratti will sit behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ghn.png Uhiriwe in the KoM standings. More importantly though is the stage victory which is still up for grabs!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/18.jpg

With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga passing under 5km to go, the head of the peloton is very unorganized. The best puncheurs have established themselves at the front without many domestiques and no major gaps have been opened in the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Pons is still leading this group, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Mutsumine and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Lagane are about 20 wheels back at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/19.jpg

The gap extends! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga is now up 40 seconds on the peloton as they can’t figure out how to work together. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Bobridge tries an attack that is quickly followed. For GC though, gaps have now been created in the peloton! Only 33 riders are in the front group. Some important riders dropped are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Bagioli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Calmejane, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Arndt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/t3a.png Mayer in A1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Narvaez is leading A2 even further back, but the gaps between groups are miniscule and could appear as nothing at the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/20.jpg

The pacing by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Bobridge does nothing and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga is still alone with 35 seconds on the field in the finishing straight. A fantastic race to go solo to the line and outrace the main favorites. Team Popo4ever p/b Morshynska will be celebrating after a difficult day on stage 1.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga wins with the chasers barely in view about 500m behind!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare is leading the group to the line for 2nd where there are still 18 bonus seconds up for grabs from the GC group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Stannard sits in 3rd with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Beltran trying to hold off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gesbert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Bol.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare easily takes the GC group, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Bol is coming strong as is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Turgis. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Stannard are still fighting to hold them off as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gesbert also attempts to follow on the left side. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Beltran is here as is GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Haller who will give away the jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare takes 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Bol 3rd! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Turgis has the quickest finish of the rest in 4th with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Bobridge rounding out the top 5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Stannard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gesbert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png De Buyst, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Haller are the remaining members of the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/25.jpg

There is definitely a gap to the next group of riders which are being paced by Jura GIANTS and Simba Cement – Tanga Fresh which appear to miss the front group. The gap appears to be about 1:15 to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga before checking the official results. Some smaller groups will definitely be coming in slowly after being distanced on the final climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/C1/TDU/S2/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga takes the overall lead and the stage victory by 35seconds. GC lead is now 29 seconds over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare. With the breakaway points, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga also manages to gain the points jersey by 1 point over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/dev.png Stannard gains the young rider’s jersey after finishing strongly in the front group and gaining some bonus seconds.
