Different to recent years the GC fight is a lot more open. Obviously Würtz and Phinney plus Wirtgen might be the top favourites, not only due to their TT strength but also as they might be a bit less exhausted after yesterdays stage.
Though Mullen or Durbridge aren`t far off and neither are the next 6-7 riders in on the TT list.
Viennet was the only top TT rider, who struggled on the climb and lost time. It`s about a great performance today and maybe surprise the others. His time will be the stage line for quite some time as the 20'43 is pretty solid.
Yatsevich, 165th in the GC and still in the mix being just 24s down.
At halftime is is 4s slower than Viennet but faster than e.g. Goldstein or Dal Col.
At the finish he has lost a bit more. Out of 4s it became 7s in the end. Provisional 2nd.
Bjerg is the new GC Minion and after the strong showings by Kalaba and Kinoshita it could become a nice race for them. His early time is strong. Just 2s to Viennet beating a few better time trialists. And actually his 2nd part is stronger so that he goes same time to Viennet and this means virtual GC leader!
Tanfield was a bit forgotten for EA Vesuvio as eyes were mainly on Wirtgen and Valter or Hepburn, when talking about home riders.
The Brit though is doing well as well going for a potentially high GC. 3s behind Viennet only at half time and same at the finish! Provisional 3rd as dropping behind Bjerg.
Meanwhile Kukrle and Erdenebat also finished and their times are just a bit behind the others, which could be enough for a decent GC.
Durbridge is the strongest TT rider so far and he shows this by going same time at half time, which is 2s faster than Bjerg, who had the fastest 2nd part yet.
And Durbridge tops that even! 3s faster in the end and new lead. Both stage and virtual GC!
NEW BEST: 20'40
More recent finishers but likely more towards top20-30 range:
Howson +11
Hepburn +15
Kämna +16
Thomas +22
Mullen coming to the finish, he wasn`t able to beat Durbridge at any point here. It`s an okay time, but not more. Expectations were probably a little bit higher as he goes 8s slower in the end, which is provisional 5th also behind team mate Viennet, Bjerg and Tanfield.
Meanwhile Christodoulos same time as Kämna`s +16.
Lammertink is always in for a top performance. One of the regular TT performers on any stage. And again, he is on a good day being 3rd and +1 at half time but then losing a bit of his pace. In the end 4th for now behind Bjerg as well. +4 s to Durbridge. Still potential top10 GC.
Hayter +12
Nareklishvili +22
Cataford as well loves those kind of races where a TT with some hard stages combine. He will be Lidl`s main guy now and shows his strength. Same time even at half time and only losing 3s towards the end. Not beating Durbridge, but same time as Viennet and Bjerg and actually being ranked higher than the Dane, so sitting in provisional 2nd GC now!
Ganna had two strong showings now. First as a long leadout, then yesterday on the climb being well placed and never in trouble.
Today though either he is more tired or not on his best day. He goes 11th and +5 at half time and additional 4s towards the end being same time as Kukrle and behind Mullen, Tanfield or Lammertink as well. So not a top5 GC but top10 is still possible.
Oliveira +25
Conci +29
Tenorio +30
Tenorio won`t repeat his double podium from the last two editions. Still a rider to watch for the longer stage races with more climbing but he apparently lost a bit of his punch on shorter climbs and TTs by now.
Mano is one of King Power`s hidden stars and maybe Thailand`s best ever cyclist? 5th and +2 at half time continues to +5 in the end. Behind Cataford and Bjerg as also Lammertink so provisional 5th GC.
Würtz does what Würtz does. He goes and shows his advantage. When we were talking about 1-2-3 seconds in between the top riders, he already had that gap at half time easily being 8s faster and then went on.
It was a long stint for Durbridge on the hot chair but Würtz with a huge mark now for the stage and GC! 12s faster than the Aussie and who knows, even Phinney is under pressure despite having had a bit of a time bonus yesterday.
NEW BEST: 20'28
Wirtgen on podium direction going 2nd early on but already 7s slower than Würtz, which means GC wise the Dane might be ahead.
+11s in the end though means, he will remain ahead of all other earlier starters and goes into 2nd GC virtually ahead of Durbridge, Cataford and Bjerg.
Phinney had a 20s bonus to Würtz before todays TT. Normally you would expect this to be enough, in especially seeing todays time gaps of "just" 10-15 seconds in the top5-10.
At halftime he already is in reach to pass Kanter, who just like Ewan will lose lots of spots today. And indeed the time bonus should see him make the GC winner again. 2nd at halftime but same time as Würtz! No chance he is losing 20s on the second half.
And indeed he won`t. But he also won`t beat him. 2nd in the finish! 2s slower than Würtz. So today it`s the Dane ahead of Phinney, but GC wise, the US rider "easily" goes for his 4th consecutive win in Tasmania!
Wirtgen with his 3rd podium but moving a step back again being beaten by Würtz, who took profit from the slower uphill fight.
Even more Durbridge in 4th GC, Cataford 5th or Bjerg 6th.
GC wise a bit unfortunate for Puma`s Ganna in 11th only having not his very best day or Polar with Mullen still 10th but also not the very best performance and Viennet far off GC wise while having a very good day here in 5th of the stage.
