Today is the only chance for the weaker time trialists to get an advantage. This goes in especially for the top puncheurs, who should be able to open some gaps today. De Bie and Lopez are the main favourites while Gidich has improved into the top tier list as well this offseason.
Aker again very active early on but not sure this went as planned.
Swift beats team mate and much better placed Potts for the early Cat.4. Sweeny in 3rd. So Amaysim again active but not with McCarthy actually, who was definitely expected here today.
All riders were caught again in the valley and more attacks were needed for the break of the day.
In the end a trio makes it:
Godon
McCormick
Swift
And suddenly Aker a bit under pressure but maybe their early "fail" is valuable now. On paper Swift is the weakest puncheur in the KoM fight but his 5 early points might give him an advantage now and actually he also was the one starting this group, which delivered him another 5 points at the following KoM with McCormick following in 2nd with Godon not having scored yet.
The Cat.3 was won by McCormick ahead of Swift, which makes them climb to 9 and 13 points. Double Aker lead by now, but McCormick in range.
The Cat.3 just under 50km to go then again goes to McCormick. This time Godon also beats Swift which makes it
15 - Swift
14 - McCormick
13 - Potts
10 - McCarthy
5 - Godon
Just one more KoM left in this race and being Cat.2 it might change a bit.
The peloton though is close and this might be good news for Aker as Swift likely would lose it against McCormick in a direct duel.
Though in a peloton KoM sprint McCarthy would have been favoured, though the Amaysim rider remains passive here and so the KoM is basically presented to Swift!
Januskevicius for Evonik working at the front taking the 10 points moving into shared 4th, while GC leader Ewan goes over the line in 2nd and also taking some KoM points here, just like Kalaba and Ovsyannikov.
GC wise really only Phinney and Wirtgen are in the top rows by now. Ganna and Würtz also not too far off but the pure puncheurs are not really seen yet.
Vlasov for Skujins and Ulysbayev for Lopez lead the peloton onto the final hill. 2,2 km left only and still everything together. And actually where are those two leaders? They can`t go that fast yet as they are always in need to search for them.
Behind them it`s Plapp, Peak and Wirtgen! Then Coquard, Ganna, Ewan and Würtz with Phinney around.
While the puncheurs slowly move up such as Kinoshita, De Bie, Yates and others, actually the two being worked for are still not ideally placed. Skujins and Lopez next to each other in 35th-40th position only. Just like Gidich actually or EA`s co-leader Valter.
Flamme Rouge and Phinney sees the pace dropping a bit. So he goes into the lead. Behind him Kinoshita and Wirtgen while De Bie is up there on the other side for Lidl.
Also Lopez from far behind suddenly has moved up into 9th position next to Ganna, Würtz, Mano and ahead of Ewan, Yates, Mohoric, Valter, Sagan, Tenorio, Skujins, Vakoc etc.
Phinney struggling! Kinoshita has passed him for the stage win and also Lopez and Yates are closing while Wirtgen and De Bie struggling a bit to hold on after being in the wind for a bit too long.
Mohoric, Valter, Ganna, Sagan, Würtz, Mano also still in the mix trying to keep all gaps together. In general the pace is not that high at the front as they allowed so many to come back.
Struggling? As if Phinney could do so!
The US rider knows this climb to perfection it seems and he is back on track after passing Kinoshita again.
Yates and Mohoric though being very fast now with Lopez still in the mix as well.
EA with Wirtgen/Valter well placed, De Bie, Vlasov (still), Ulyshbayev/Plapp for Evonik (which shows the weird pace here).
Then Sagan, Skujins and others, you would have expected further up the road.
Phinney takes it. Not his first stage win here but actually a big, big move towards the fourth GC title in a row and obviously the perfect start for a new team.
The bonus seconds might be too much for Würtz and others to gain back in the medium TT.
Kinoshita still found hid legs to defend 2nd ahead of Yates with Mohoric and Lopez next.
Wirtgen in 6th is solid on such finish and a good position for tomorrows ITT even though he likely had hoped to gap some of the weaker TT riders, who seem to be in the same big group.
Valter next while De Bie in 10th, Skujins 11th, Gidich 14th or Sagan 16th maybe a bit below expectations while Mano 10thz, Ganna 20th or Würtz 22nd are likely happy.
But let`s see where the gap opened even! Basically there were no gaps here, really a boring finale today with no one really going for it with full throttle. Was more a stop and go tactic for many here, while the weaker puncheurs were able to keep contact by going 110% the full climb. Too short to drop them this way.
And this means, we have an incredible number of 167 riders still in the GC fight! Including most top TT riders and suddenly the likes of Durbridge, Lammertink or Howson are in the GC fight as well while the top puncheurs will drop a lot tomorrow and also Phinney/Würtz/Wirtgen/Ganna/Mano are no longer favoured alone and have allowed a lot more rivals for that decision.
And actually weirdest to see Ewan remain in the GC lead going into the 3rd stage! Not that he will stand a chance but it`s a nice performance nevertheless.
Polar being hit as well as Viennet is one of the few riders with a gap, so his GC chances are gone now and it is only for the stage tomorrow as TT specialist.
