Race Report

The PCT season kicks off Down Under with the aptly named Down Under Classic. 81k of fast and furious racing, the roulers will launch some late attacks but with an easy parcours the sprinters will hope to be able to control things and make it a bunch sprint for the victory.

Two Assa Abloy riders top the favorites list: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Konychev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Dainese.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/favs.jpg

About 7k gone, lots of interest in the break but right now the only rider with an official gap is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/gla.png O'Loughlin. He has 28 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/01.jpg

70k to go, the first lap of the short circuit is complete. O’Loughlin still out front on his own, he has 28 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Bonello, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Piccolo, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mcy.png Mendoza. Another 19 seconds to a 5-rider group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Giulietti, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Forcellini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Canal, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Fominykh, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Battsengel and 28 seconds further back to the peloton, which is still chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/02.jpg

The peloton decides that is an acceptable number of escapees and 2 laps later they have almost come together, while O’Loughlin might be better served to let them catch him, he is still slightly ahead. 57k to go the gap from O’Loughlin to the peloton is 1’41.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/03.jpg

42k to go, up front the 9 breakaway riders are finally together, but their lead is down to 1’18 with Fastned, DK Zalgiris, Assa Abloy, Tryg, Sony and Bralirwa all represented near the front of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/04.jpg

Just under 30k to go. Gap to the break is 45 seconds. The first 10 riders in order are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tlt.png Moulingui, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Batmunkh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Thwaites, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lmp.png Medvedev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Magnusson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Sleen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Dainese, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/brs.png Habimana and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Halvorsen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/05.jpg

23k and the break is over with the work mostly done by Trans, Lampre and Stela-Vita. But with the catch made pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Magnusson goes to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/06.jpg

With 15k to go it is Sony – Force India keeping the pace high with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Havik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Kooistra.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/07.jpg

13k to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/xr0.png Houle launches the first attack, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ubt.png Jacobs also near the front. Kooistra chasing and Kraftwerk has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Juntunen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Zubov working on the front as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/08.jpg

Houle tries twice and is shut down quickly both times. With just under 8k to go Kraftwerk has their sprint train on the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Zabel following pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Tesfom and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png De Buyst.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/09.jpg

Under 4k to go, Sony – Force India back to the front with Kooistra followed by the Kuroeda brothers as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Varga launches an attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/10.jpg

2.7k to go, the pace it too high for Varga to get a gap. The Sony – Force India train is on the front it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Saya Kuroeda, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Shiki Kuroeda then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/sfi.png Vesely. In the Kraftwerk train pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/kmm.png Rumac has replaced Tesfom then it is De Buyst and Zabel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Halvorsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/muw.png Saber, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Kamberaj are the riders on Zabel’s wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/11.jpg

1.5k to go, both trains have lost their first rider and Kraftwerk has overtaken Sony.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/12.jpg

900 meters, Zabel launched with about 1k to go and he is holding the lead for now. Closest to him is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Halvorsen, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Dainese, Kamberaj and Saber. Can a CT team hijack this race for the second year in a row. The next two are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Manninen. Vesely’s lead out collapsed and he is on Kamberaj’s wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/13.jpg

500 meters, Zabel is the point of the spear, Dainese and Halvorsen gaining on him on the left and the right. The riders are bunched together and some of those behind are having trouble finding a sprint lane.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/14.jpg

Zabel collapses and it is Dainese versus Halvorsen with Groenewegen, Kamberaj and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn, in the center, closest. 300 meters to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/15.jpg

100 meters, Halvorsen is fading. Dainese leads now from Groenewegen pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Afewerki is coming fast in the middle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Howard is making good progress near the barrier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/fas.png Groenewegen times it right and grabs it on the line. A victorious start for Fastned in the PCT. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Dainese holds on for 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Afewerki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Howard are fighting out 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/17.jpg

Howard wins the battle for 3rd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Manninen is 5th, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/tir.png Degenkolb who ends up best of the CT sprinters as the other fade.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/spr.png Einhorn is 8th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/stv.png Kamberaj and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Halvorsen settles for 10th, he was in the wind a little too early.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Reports/HC/DUC/19.jpg

It is much worse for the teams with lead outs as Zabel and Vesely finish 16th and 17th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Demare’s PCT debut is a failure as he was never in the picture and finishes 15th, but there will better races for him in the future.
