Basically a pan flat event but then there`s an early Cat.3 and a plateau high at halftime for half of the stage. In the end all but a sprint though would be a surprise. In especially with couple of teams being interested to win today in such.
Coquard still riding for ELCO is topping the favourite list but Ewan and Kanter are close rivals. In especially the Aussie is not far off. Support wise ELCO might have a small advantage having the best sprinter leadout while the others are more on flat riders next to them.
One Aussie couldn`t wait to show himself in his home country. You would have expected the countries best puncheur on tomorrows stage but McCarthy probably realized that his missing TT skills make him just one of many puncheurs without a real GC chance. So he is in the break today and trying to get the KoM early on. He though miscalculated his attack at the Cat.3 and was passed by Potts on the final meters. Young prospect Van Den Berg was 3rd there but strength wise clearly the no.3 in that group.
Earlier in the race a few more riders tried to join the break as well including Mohoric, who faces a similar issue as McCarthy TT wise. Though with Potts Aker is still in there and so far rather successful.
McCarthy though takes the 2nd Cat.3 not underestimating Potts this time. Though as the Aker rider comes over the line in 2nd, the KoM is shared with the young Dutch being 6 points off in 3rd.
Mainly the sprinter teams ISA, Puma and ELCO are seen working at the front. Add some GC teams such as Grieg for Würtz or Lidl for De Bie and you have the chasing teams.
The maximum gap was around 6 minutes but with 15km to go the trio is caught. Some valuable riders though had to work for their sprinters/leaders such as Bouglas for ELCO, Vakoc for ISA and others.
The sprint preperation is underway but apparently one team has different plans and surprised the others with 4,5 km to go.
ISA moving to the front with Mraouni and Ewan is right behind.
A bit earlier Coquard was well placed just behind Ewan, though the surprising power move by Mraouni wasn`t followed by him and it ended in a bit of blocking for the French.
3.1 km to go and the ISA duo have a 8 s gap!
Puma is the team chasing hard now. Well, not only for Kanter but also the perfect riders there with Ganna and Cavagna as leadout for him
Ganna Cavagna Kanter Kalaba Banaszek Kennaugh Perera Yates Ovsyannikov Prasad Peak Garcia Cortina Carsi Van Poppel
Coquard as said was perfectly placed behind Ewan but then missed out to move over to another sprint train in time and then was horribly blocked by some. He is a bit behind now but moving forward again. Though his team support could be better as no one is around him for some proper help.
With 1,8 km Ewan is caught again. Did he overpower now or was he perfectly covered behind Mraouni?
He is in a good position now having just dropped back just behind Kanter and ahead of all the other sprinters.
Peak and Kalaba won the fight for the best of the rest. All others though somewhere behind them as well and towards the other side of the road.
Coquard not giving up yet. He is moving around on the outside and only having a few meters. Spanopoulos right next to him but the main work is done by the French really. Time will tell if this effort sees him struggle in the end or if he really makes it back.
What a leadout!
Puma really smashing it here. Ganna basically did a 3 km chase/leadout and delivered the duo Cavagna/Kanter under the Flamme Rouge, where Kanter can still wait in the slipstream!
Ewan well placed still with Peak and Kalaba behind with Carsi, Banaszek and then actually already Coquard! in line.
Van Poppel as only sprinter going "solo" on the other side of the road after not having found a better position earlier.
Garcia Cortina, Ovsyannikov, Kennaugh move over behind Van Poppel while the others remain in line to the Puma train.
Though Kanter and Ewan are clearly on another level! Once Cavagna has delivered Kanter to the 400 m line, the German goes into sprint mode and only Ewan is able to follow!
Then a small gap and not sure if Coquard could go faster but is again blocked behind slower sprinters or if he has used all his energy already. He at least won`t make it back in time to go for the win today. And neither will Van Poppel, who is losing ground slowly as well.
150 m left and it definitely will be a duel of Ewan and Kanter. The Aussie having a bit more pace right now and goes into the lead!
And it`s win no.1 for Ewan and ISA this season. Kanter in 2nd after a brilliant leadout and in case of similar lineups later on, this train is something to watch out for.
Peak, Carsi and Prasad being the remaining top5 then with Kalaba, Banaszek, Van Poppel following.
Coquard indeed struggling towards the end being 15th only, which is unfortunate as him joining the top2 today in a direct duel would have been interesting.
ISA with an interesting tactic here as first they went into "attack" mode but Ewan showed his strength still and didn`t suffer from this move. And who knows, maybe it was their tactic today to get rid of the one sprinter faster than him on paper. Then it all worked perfectly fine.
A small note: The breakaway trio all lost a bit in the end, so McCarthy is out of GC competition, but might have gained a bit more room for another KoM attack tomorrow?
