We have now reached the decisive phase of this bike race. Today, tomorrow and the day after tommorow will be the ones where the GC favourites have to stay alert, and especially on the gruesome stage 14. Today the mountains aren’t really that tough, but still the organizers has marked it mountainous, so this could be interesting.
Hungerbühler led a small breakaway group over the first categorized climb to pile up the full 20 points at the top. He has 24 points before today and with 90 points up for grabs in this stage, he might challenge Rui Costa for the jersey, unless the Portuguese gets to the front. Richard Ochoa Quintero, 5th in the GC, also attacked for some points and ended up gaining contact with the four leaders, who quickly after this picture was taken were joined by Magalhaes.
Ciccarese, Frei, Baños Ballester, Magalhães, Hungerbühler and Ochoa Quintero.
So no Rui Costa in the break. This is a great opportunity for stage winner, Hungerbühler. Ochoa Quintero wasn’t relaying the break to the annoyance of Baños Ballester.
Surprisingly the pack led the gap grow meaning Ochoa Quintero was the virtual leader for a short period of time. But with 100 kilometres to go his breakaway companions besides Magalhäes, who had been dropped, attacked and left Ochoa Quintero behind.
Stranded in no-mans land you would think Ochoa Quintero was going to waste a lot of enery out there. He was taking it easy though so he should have it all under control.
Hungerbühler takes full points again at the 2nd Categorized climb of the day and he is getting closer now. The pack crossed the top about 8 minutes back with 90 kilometres to go.
Going up the second of the two toughest climbs on the day the leaders’ gap is shrinking and it looks like the pack have everything under control as we hit the base of the climb with just under 70 kilometres to go.
Back in the pack Botero sparks up some attacks.
At the top it is Hungerbühler who takes the points for the third time of the day.
Behind the leaders a group with Tondo, Botero, Peterson, Mori and Salgueiro has formed. But they haven’t been able to stay with Golcer, who they are trying to chase down. All of them were reeled back in though.
The pack split as we crossed the top and it was not a good split for Bernhard Kohl, who is sitting 3rd in the GC. He gets caught in the wrong end of it alongside a very large group of riders. He is the only GC rider in it though.
With 40 kilometres to go the breakaway still holds a 5 minute lead over the pack, where Kohl is still absent and losing ground. This doesn’t look good for the Austrian. With 25 kilometres to go the break still holds a decent lead, but it is coming down now. Baños Ballester has to give in though.
So with 20 kilometres left, this is the race situation. Ciccarese, Hungerbühler and Frei lead.
They have about 3 minutes on a 26-man group of favourites with all the favourites in it except Bernhard Kohl.
He is sitting in the peleton right here, but he is 1’48 after the Favourites Group.
Hungerbühler was tied on points with Costa before the last KoM Sprint, which he also takes, to pile up a total of 90 points on the day. He will wear the KoM Jersey tomorrow. The pack is very close now as you can see and there are just 12 kilometres to go.
Pereiro Sio and Ochoa Quintero got away in the descend, but so did Efimkin and he is up the road with the four breakaway riders, who have managed to sustain their lead.
Efimkin is strong and he puts a lot of effort into staying away as he is towing the breakaway group with him. It gets to Hungerbühler and Frei, but Ciccarese is still in his wheel as we enter the final three kilometres.
Efimkin starts the sprint and with Ciccarese being in the break all day this should be no problem for the Russian.
But here comes Ciccarese!
And he wins it convincingly! What an effort by Ciccarese to beat Efimkin after being in the break all day. That’s the second win for Dasani in this race. They have really had a nice Vuelta.
The group of favourites come in at 39 seconds led in by Eibegger, the only White Bear Steyr rider in the group.
The peloton with Kohl is led in by Iljo Keisse more than 4 minutes after. Kohl drops to 11th in the GC. What a devastating day for the Austrian.
