Team Garmin-Chipotle (TSL) is a team of young ravishing talent on the UCI ProContinental Tour. Led by ProTour veterans Christian Vandevelde (USA) and David Millar (GBR), the team of young studs looks to show the world how good a new team of young stars truly is. This will be a career showcasing the talents from the climbing of Vandevelde to the sprinting of Tyler Farrar. From the time trialing of David Zabriskie to the classics riding of Martin Maaskant. This team will have its ups and downs. it's goal to be promoted to the ProTour and more importantly be one of the best teams in the world. Join me, Jeff Hardy Jr. on my quest to lead the Garmin-Chipotle team tactically to the ProTour and to some future grand tour victories.
Meet The Team
Goal: Magnus Beckstedt, one of the only members of this team who has a stage win in the Tour de France, will focus on the cobbles classics for the year (Paris-Roubaix and the Ronde van Vlanderen). Other then that he will work as a lead out man for the sprints. He will be useful early on mountain stages as well before he fades out on the first large climb of the day.
Goal: A late pick-up, Jonathan Belis will develop as a sprinter and will serve for now as the last lead-out man. This means that either Christopher Sutton, Tyler Farrar, or Julian Dean will be the only ones to line up behind him. As his sprinting develops he may be able to move into the punchout role that goes for the stage wins. But he has a long career ahead of him at 19 years of age.
Goal: The Ameican Time Trialist will be very useful on flat stages keeping the sprinters fresh as well as being a huge risk taker. To maximize his ability to ride not only on the flats but hills. Seeing as he isn't a contender though to take sprints or to win any classics, Cozza will use his acceleration to get away from the pack or use his flat abilities to pull back a large advantage.
Goal: An experienced veteran, Tom Danielson serves as one of the leaders on this team. With his solid climbing ability and time trialing ability he will be a threat in many tours. However when it comes down to it, he's second in command to Christian Vandevelde. Danielson will use his veteran experience to really serve well on this team whether it be helping on the flats or in the mountains. Is a contracted leader but is a team player when it comes down to it.
Goal: As one of the knockout sprinters for Team Garmin-Chipotle, Julian Dean will look for as many victories as possible. Seeing as he isn't the best sprinter in the world a good leadout is crucial to the success of his sprinting. However with solid placings in the Giro d'Italia points competition and Vuelta a Espana points competitions in the past he does know how to sprint with the best.
Goal: Currently a true mountain climber he will be a huge help to any leader in the mountains because with his durability and current ability he will develop and become a phenomenal climber. Maybe not grand tour victory material (because he still can't time trial) but as a super domestique he's the guy you look for to have big days in the mountains and really could win a mountain stage on a breakaway.
Goal: A future cobbles classics rider, Duyn serves as a solid time trialist and good assist player in the flats as part of the long leadout train that Garmin tends to implement. He is a very good team player and will protect the main sprinters because any win is a team win. He does have the desires to go out on long breakaways and will be used in that manner as well. Still young, this year is a development year for him as well.
Goal: Easily can be claimed the man with the fastest "kick" on the Garmin Team, Farrar is a young but accomplished sprinter who looks to continue that this season. Still developing he is already one of the teams knockout sprinters and is a man to rely on when you need to get a stage win. It's usually not his fault when the team doesn't win the sprint, that's how good he tends to be. This year he will split most of the races with Julian Dean as the main guy, but if it comes down to one grand tour this season he's the man.
Goal: The young "Fighter" as many like to call him will serve as a man who protects and a man who leads out. Don't expect to see Frischkorn really in any breakways this season because he's a young guy who won't have much development minus on the flats. If you want to compare this to when Lance Armstrong won the Tour over and over again then compare Frischkorn to Benjamin Noval. A true flat rider whose job is to keep the flats under control, however will be leading people out for the sprints as well.
Goal: He's one of the major players on the team, the Canadian Hesjedal will continue to develop (minimally) which may in the end help any chance he has at winning the tours that he enters. Not a contracted leader makes him an even bigger threat because of the reason that people will underestimate him. Expect to seem him attack in breakaways once in a while (like Oscar Perreiro or Kurt Asle-Arvesen) but most importantly expect to see Hesjedal on the marquee climbs and high-up on GC (General Classification). He can climb and he can time trial, usually the key to success.
Goal: He's probably the best white jersey rider we've got on the team right now because he can climb (mountains and the rolling hills quickly) and he can time trial. However he is a teammate and not really a GC man right now so he may sacrifice himself for his team. Trent Lowe is one of the best future stories to consider and its coming sooner rather then later however for this season see him playing the role of Roberto Heras for Lance Armstrong. Put the main guy behind you, you do your attack and then the other guy shoots past you, like a lead-out.
Goal: Like Backstedt, Maaskant will be big in the cobbles classics however may be able to sneak some sprints and some breakaways. However with his main role being as a leadout man (in the same role as Backstedt) don't expect to see many breakaways out of Maaskant. The only team you may see him ride on his own is in Monte Paschi Eroica, Paris-Roubaix, or the Ronde van Vlanderren when victory is approaching. He can compete with Boonen, Devolder, Ballan, Cancellara, etc.
Goal: The Irish Sensation, Dan Martin continues to become one of the faces of Irish cycling and its no different here. The 21 year old will be able to contend for a grand tour soon enough because he can climb and he can time trial and not only can he do that he can do that well. He has huge potential, however for this year he'll play the role of Trent Lowe only will be leading out before Lowe goes because of the pecking order of ability.
Goal: McCarty is one of those frequent breakaway guys simply because of the fact that he's like the unexpected guy to have. He can climb hills, not mountains, and he can ride on the flats. He'll be in a breakaway or looking after one of the leadout men basically. True team-mate. Hell if need be you'll see him on the front reeling the break back in. Regardless, it's guys like this that you need on your team no matter what their role may be.
Goal: Young stud out of Canada. A true man of stage races because of his potential to ride well on all levels in a stage race. Right now he's going to spend the season developing but he should be able to put in some decent results with his climbing abilities as of now. Look for him to do well in the races that have more climbing then flats because he is relatively poor on the flats and can see himself losing time there.
Goal: Meyer is like a younger Paolo Bettini without the strong hill presence. Relate him more to Thor Hushovd with better climbing I suppose. He's a strong sprinter now and will only continue to improve. Look for him to be aggressive though because right now he's basically a leadout man.
Goal: As a former maillot jaune in the Tour de France (thanks to the ITT) he will be really solid for stage victories in the individual time trial but more importantly is good enough on the flats to lend a helping hand in the leadouts. He isn't the worst climber in the world either so he should be able to keep a reasonable spot in tours and maybe be a sleeper attacker (kind of like Cyril Dessel in this years Tour) and take a stage or two on the open road.
Goal: A strong time trialist, Danny Pate will use that to his advantage as of now but keep in mind he will continue to develop and prosper into another strong GC contender down the road. He will serve as protection to sprinters now and maybe go out on some breakaways but development is key so don't expect to see some huge results out of him throughout the season. Development is key for him this year.
Goal: A strong mountain climber but really not so good on the smaller hills, Peterson will look to develop his hill climbing because he has the potential to become a really strong competitor in the one day classics. But then again he could become a key member in stage races. Well that's just what he'll do. Go out on the attack om mountain stages and use his ability to ride alone because people will not expect it. Expect this man to develop because he is still at a very young age.
Goal: Future World ITT Champion for certain, 17 year old Taylor Phinney signed to be apart of Garmin's phenomenal time trial squad. Not at a competative level yet, he's on this team truly for development sakes. Expect him to be in breakaways virtually all the time this season just so he can ride alone. Riding alone is the key to the time trial so expect the manager to push that. However don't expect really any results out of him this year.
Goal: The young talent was signed around the same time as Phinney, however Sagan can really do it all and will be a stage racing man for a long time to come. He's got the potential to do so, now we basically just need the time and resources to allow for him to develop. Like Phinney don't expect many results out of him this year or many attacks but he will race simply for the sake of being in the peloton and riding those kilometers all day long.
Goal: Aussie sprinter Christopher Sutton will serve as the last leadout man for Garmin this season. Much like Gerald Ciolek in the Tour this year for Mark Cavendish, Sutton will allow Dean or Farrar to get to a high speed before they accelerate past him. Keep in mind Sutton has the ability to sprint so he will be able to get some high results as well on stages despite someone passing him on his team regardless. An important piece to the puzzle known as a bunch sprint.
Goal: If anybody is going to stop Taylor Phinney become the World ITT Champ for years to come it will be teammate Tejay Van Garderen. Van Garderen, 2 years older than Phinney has established himself a little more however won't be in a big role. Expect some breakaways and protecting the sprinters. Maybe a leadout here and there, but more importantly look for results in the time trial. Without a doubt.
Goal: VDV is the undisputed team leader of Garmin. He's the best climber, one of the best ITT' riders as well and that will play to his strength. Having ridden for and with so many tour winners in the past (Sastre, Armstrong) he now will get his chance to shine near the end of his career. However, don't expect him to re-sign after this season. Garmin has a luxury with VDV to exemplify his results for the year, drop his contract, use his salary of 100k a month elsewhere and bring in some more diverse talent (or maybe a big time climber). He will be the top point getter on the Continental tour for Garmin this season and maybe on the whole Continental tour.
Goal: Being the only member of the team and most of the pro peloton to have won a stage in all three of the Grand Tours, the former maillot jaune brings his phenomenal time trial to Garmin Chipotle this season. He's a decent climber but he has a very good acceleration which could separate him from other riders if the time comes. He's not always a leader of the squad so he has a luxury similar to Hesjedal.
Goals for the Season
- Wild-card recipient for the Tour de France
- Stage wins in the Tour of California
- Stage wins in the Giro d'Italia
- Stage wins in the Volta a Cataluyna
- Win the Tour of Georgia
The Australians will begin their season at the Australian Championships. The teams formal season begins January 26th at the Tour of Qatar with the Doha Team Trial. |

Australian Championships
Christopher Sutton, Cameron Meyer, and Trent Lowe were the three representatives in the Australian Championship race. It was an interesting race for the Garmin boys which included some heartbreaking falls. Take a look at some of the highlights.
The race begins with Trent Lowe on the front of the peloton. This image didn't last too long as many attacks came throughout this race.
The first breakaway of the day sees Garmin's Cameron Meyer in it along with an Astana rider, a Columbia rider, and two Drapac Porsche riders. This breakaway didn't last too long though.
The peloton reformed for another brief stint as soon enough more attacks would come.
Meyer attacked yet again, however this time he went on a solo effort getting a huge gap from the group behind him. The largest gap was about 2 and a half minutes however slowly but surely that lead came down.
Trent Lowe attacked following McGee who was up the road and Meyer his teammate. Trent Lowe would quickly cause the gap to shrink due to his freshness from being behind teammate Christopher Sutton all day.
Bradley McGee (CSC) was the next rider up the road behind Meyer. He would continue nipping away the advantage that Meyer had and eventually he would join Meyer.
The gap between McGee and Lowe would fall relatively quickly as you see Lowe about to catch McGee...
...Eventually the three of them would make-up the front group and nobody would see them for the rest of the day.
Lowe was the first person to attack from the front group and he made a reasonably large gap between himself and the group of Meyer and McGee. It would appear as if he would be victorious until...
...He crashed on one of the final descends to the finish. This allowed Meyer and McGee to pass Lowe and become the front group.
In a sprint finish McGee would pass the young sprinter Meyer to win the Australian Championships...
...However Meyer celebrated as he was happy despite finishing 2nd. This was his first race as a member of Garmin and he got a very sold result.
Lowe managed to sprint to a 3rd place finish.
Overall Results
1. Bradley McGee (CSC)
2. Cameron Meyer (Garmin-Chipotle)
3. Trent Lowe (Garmin-Chipotle)
The Tour of Qatar begins in about 10 days. |

Once, with Columbia, I went on a massive solo break with Hansen. He got up to 17 minutes gap before it came down, as he had lost all of his energy. On the final descent, with the peloton 6 minutes back, he crashed twice and still won. |
