Kon'nichiwa Welcome to our new HQ in lovely Tokyo.
New year, new us! After six long years, we've made a change in our looks and our location. We've moved on from our half dozen year association with our previous sponsors and are moving on to new pastures, and hopefully new accomplishments. Last season was our best ever result in the MG, and with new motivation, and a new focus, we hope to be able to build on it and improve further.
Founded in 1946, Sony come with a an impressive heritage and currently operate as a conglomerate featuring electronics, cameras, computer hardware, films, music, video games and many more. Their worldwide reputation is something that immediately attracted them to us and was our immediate first choice when our current sponsors announced their departure. Their popularity in the team owner's home country was also a big reason for this choice, with the hope that they can help promote the sport there along with our secondary sponsor. We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership.
Force India extends their contract with us for another two seasons and remain as our secondary sponsors, using their brand and reach to promote the sport of cycling in the team manager's home country. There is serious excitement about the possibility of this being a breakout season for the second most populous country in the world in the sport of cycling, and you know we'll be keeping a sharp eye on how things develop. A few sponsor changes as we bring in a few sponsors from our new home country to support us in our quest this season. Banking and Insurance Partner | ABN Amro | Automobile Partners | Toyota (Cars) and VDL (Buses) | Equipment | Fuji (Frames), SRAM (Groupsets), Shimano (Wheels), Continental (Tyres) and Kask (Helmets) | Jersey | Reebok |
Primary Focus: Japan
Our new focus is the Far East corner of the world, but as was the case also previously, we're not ones to limit ourselves. We do hope to be able to develop the country as well as Asian cycling in general in our new venture though, similar to what we believe we were able to do previously as well.
Secondary Focus: Netherlands
Netherlands remain our secondary sponsor, so we're definitely not giving up on our long term projects completely. We believe we have built up enough goodwill in the region over the past years, to still be relevant there.
A big thank you to Ezeefreak for this wonderful jersey, highlighting our new colour scheme in an excellent way

"second most populous country in the world"
Thought I heard otherwise lately?
Good luck, nice jerseys

Really interesting change, and cool to see someone fill the Japanese niche that Voyagin has left open. With that, you should have plenty of targets in free agency, too, I assume And it's neat that you already have the Kuroedas, and Choi from the broader region. Absolutely lovely jersey, too, that should stand out nicely in the peloton!

Indeed, it might be the best possible timing for the shift to Japan - although I guess you'll face some stiff competition for some of the already known Japanese FAs But good to see the country remain on the MG map. I'm hoping for you that India will eventually bring up some good enough cyclists to actually make it your secondary nation
It will definitely be intriguing to see what you're going to do with your mostly European roster - especially if you want to fit in one of the big Japanese guys in. Good luck for the (slow) transition to become a mostly Asian team, this will surely be fun to follow
And echoing the others, I do like your jersey as well Not much of a color scheme change (except for the Philips blue to be gone), but a really nice design

Seems like a good time to move into the Asian market. The HQ is also top notch as usual
I'm looking forward to see how you shape the squad for the upcoming season.

Love the new theme of the team and you have prepared that change nicely with Choi and the Kuroeda bros last year. You had a strong season last year, hopefully you can build on the success and finally tackle promotion now!
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Word is the Dutch riders are not very keen to ride in an Asian based team and have put in formal transfer requests.

Lovely new sponsor and I love the overall look of the team. I can't wait to see how you tackle the transfer market but chances are I'll be sure to have a look in your shop good luck for the new season!

@MacC: Our census is two years overdue, so can't say for sure! What you've probably read are estimates, which I've seen as well but will wait for official confirmation. Thanks
@cunego: Thought it was a good time for a change after half a dozen years with the previous sponsors. Well Voyagin leaving does open up interesting possibilities, so we'll see what we can do there. Helps to already have some regional influence in the squad for sure as well. Think Ezee did a great job with our jersey as well, thanks
@Fabianski: The change has been coming and getting Choi and the Kuroedas last season was the first steps on that process actually. Have been planning this since then You're right about the competition for the best Japanese FAs, have no doubts about that.
Honestly speaking, India doesn't have enough riders worth even suggesting at the moment, so not sure if it ever becomes a full secondary sponsor but maybe it can if the sport becomes more popular n the next few years. Fingers crossed
The squad will see some changes off courses, but with Dutch secondary sponsorship, there isn't a need for a complete overhaul. We'll see how much of a change eventually happens. Thanks also for the nice words on the jersey
@redordead: Thanks for the nice words on the HQ Looking forward to it myself!
@knockout: Glad you like it. The whole idea to try to get Choi and the Kuroedas was to ease the team into this transition, and I was very glad to get them last season. The plan is to build on last season off course but there will be work to do in transfers with the expected changes.
@alexkr: That is only partially correct
@KaiserAdler: Thanks for the encouragement and you're always welcome to look around

What a team, what a history, what a story and what a season you just had. Unlucky to not promote in the end. Hopefully you can manage to have another succesful transfer season like last year, and maybe this year's the year to end up where you belong. Liking the jersey as well, the red pants should definitely make your riders quite visible as well. It will be my pleasure to race against you this season.

We thought it was time to look back at our team history a little, before we look ahead to the 2023 season. In this post, we've tried to gather some stats on how the riders that have worn our colours have done for us in our six years of existence.

| CT | PCT | PCT | CT | PCT | PCT | Name | '17 | '18 | '19 | '20 | '21 | '22 | Total | Wilco Kelderman | | | 636 | 608 | 375 | | 1619 | Lahcen Saber | | 661 | 511 | | | | 1172 | Pierre Paolo Penasa | | | | | 445 | 400 | 845 | Tiesj Benoot | | | | | | 784 | 784 | Sergio Luis Henao Montoya | | 617 | | | | | 617 | Tom Van Asbroeck | | | | | 312 | 291 | 603 | Ki Ho Choi | | | | | | 533 | 533 | Nico Keinath | | | | 472 | | | 472 | Rui Costa | | 343 | | | | | 343 | David Per (Loan) | 119 | 197 | | | | | 316 |
Kelderman remains on top, with Saber still second in these standings. Penasa moves up to 3rd, with Benoot's superb season bringing him up to 4th in the all time list! Van Asbroeck and Choi are now 6th and 7th, respectively. Two year loan-in (at level 1 and lvl 3) David Per still stays inside the Top 10! A very interesting observation in this table is that eighteen different countries are featured among the Top 20 riders, showing that we truly have been a global team!
Name | '17 | '18 | '19 | '20 | '21 | '22 | Total | Joonas Henttala | | | | 71 | 78 | 73 | 222 | Jasper Bovenhuis | | | 76 | 70 | 73 | | 219 | Tom Dumoulin | | | | 64 | 70 | 65 | 199 | Ronan Van Zandbeek | 60 | 75 | 64 | | | | 199 | Ide Schelling | | | | 94 | 89 | | 183 | Romain Bardet | 52 | | 66 | 62 | | | 180 | Gijs Leemreize | | | | | 100 | 76 | 176 | Piet Allegaert | 14 | 94 | 54 | | | | 162 | Kevin Inkelaar | | | 87 | 74 | | | 161 | David Per (Loan) | 63 | 73 | | | | | 136 |
We have a new leader in terms of RDs for, but its not a name one would expect - Joonas Henttala. Dumoulin moves up to tied third while Leemreize is the other entrant in the Top 10.
Name | Total | Out on Loan | Riccardo Minali | 5 | 3 | Pascal Eenkhoorn | 4 | 3 | Wilco Kelderman | 3 | 0 | Romain Bardet | 3 | 0 | Tom Dumoulin | 3 | 0 | Jasper Bovenhuis | 3 | 0 | Ronan Van Zandbeek | 3 | 0 | Joonas Henttala | 3 | 0 | Ide Schelling | 3 | 1 | Kevin Inkelaar | 3 | 1 |
Riccardo Minali has been on the books of our team for the longest time, but he spent three of those years out on loan. Pascal Eenkhoorn has a similar story, with 2022 being his only season riding in our colours, Avenir notwithstanding. Kelderman, Bardet, Dumoulin, Bovenhuis, Van Zandbeek and Henttala are the riders who have ridden in our colours for the longest time, each for three years.
Name | Total Points | Total RDs | PpRD | Tiesj Benoot | 784 | 40 | 19.60 | Sergio Luis Henao Montoya | 617 | 42 | 14.69 | Wilco Kelderman | 1619 | 114 | 14.20 | Lahcen Saber | 1172 | 83 | 14.12 | Ki Ho Choi | 533 | 39 | 13.67 | Nico Keinath | 472 | 48 | 9.83 | Pierre Paolo Penasa | 845 | 91 | 9.29 | Rui Costa | 343 | 48 | 7.15 | Tom Van Asbroeck | 603 | 94 | 6.41 | Florentino Marquez | 279 | 44 | 6.34 |
Benoot replaces Henao Montoya at the top of the PpRD standings, and that too by a huge margin! Choi jumps up to 5th, with Penasa in 7th. Van Asbroeck remains in the Top 10.
Name | Total Points | Total Wage Earned | Average Wage/Point | Igor Boev | 136 | 0 | 0 | Marcel Wyss | 289 | 55000 | 190 | Nico Keinath | 472 | 140000 | 297 | Michel Kreder | 238 | 85000 | 357 | Ramunas Navardauskas | 204 | 80000 | 392 | Tiesj Benoot | 784 | 375000 | 478 | Tomas Paprstka | 216 | 120000 | 556 | Bert Van Lerberghe | 160 | 90000 | 563 | Jos Van Emden | 79 | 50000 | 633 | Riccardo Minali | 173 | 110000 | 636 |
No changes right at the top but Benoot in 6th and Minali in 10th are the new entrants inside the Top 10. No one is ever catching Boev we think!

The Top 4 remain the same. Penasa and Choi move into 5th and 6th respectively, with Van Asbroeck also moving into the Top 10.

Benoot is the only new entrant for this table and slots into 2nd directly!

Van Asbroeck is the big mover, moving up to 2nd in the all time achievers list. Benoot slots into the Top 10 as well.
Name | Podiums | RDs | RDs/Podiums | Nico Keinath | 12 | 48 | 4.00 | Wilco Kelderman | 17 | 114 | 6.71 | Tiesj Benoot | 5 | 40 | 8.00 | Igor Boev | 7 | 57 | 8.14 | Ki Ho Choi | 4 | 39 | 9.75 | Sergio Luis Henao Montoya | 4 | 42 | 10.50 | Geert Van der Sanden | 5 | 56 | 11.20 | Michel Kreder | 8 | 106 | 13.25 | Tom Van Asbroeck | 7 | 94 | 13.43 | Florentino Marquez | 3 | 44 | 14.67 |
Keinath still sits pretty in this category, with Kelderman in second. Benoot moves into 3rd with Choi now 5th. Van Asbroeck also makes an entry into the Top 10.
| Rider of the Year | Young Rider of the Year | Race of the Year | 2017 | Marcel Wyss | David Per | Course de Solidarnosc | 2018 | Lahcen Saber | David Per | Cheshire Cycling Tour | 2019 | Wilco Kelderman | Thomas Boudat | SAA Tour d'Afrique | 2020 | Nico Keinath | Michael Storer | GP Yekaterinburg and Milano - Torino | 2021 | Pierre Paolo Penasa | Daniel Moricz | Tour du Maroc, Tour of East Java and Giro dell'Emilia | 2022 | Tiesj Benoot | Pascal Eenkhoorn | Giro dell'Emilia |
No rider has won the season ending top award more than once for us. Time will tell if Benoot can do it next season. Eenkhoorn is also the first ever winner of the young rider award, who wasn't a loan-in, which means either we do very good loan-ins, or we haven't had good young riders in the team! The season ending Giro dell'Emillia is the only race to win the race of the year award more than once.

Rate that you're stepping into the shoes of Valv's project and trying to corner the Japanese market this season! The transition started last year with the Kuroedas joining your team and now there are a lot of other interesting prospects in the pool! Should be a fun team when we're done with transfers!

I love those history stats, thanks for doing them
It's interesting to see that Wilco sometimes felt like an absolute failure, but is actually still leading lots of key stats, like most points, best stage racer, best classics rider, and most wins. Even his PpRD and return on wage aren't that shabby - so despite his huge wage, I guess he wasn't *that* bad after all.
Benoot obviously has made a big impact in his first year - the feeling I had all season long is clearly confirmed by the data. Getting from zero to 4th in points - in a team that already has 6 years of existence - is a great achievement (in addition to the raw numbers of more than 700 points), and I guess his PpRD benchmark might stand until you're in PT and get a really great rider. And the best - or worst for us other PCT managers - is that he's only 29 and can still be trained twice
Choi also was a great signing, will be interesting to see what he can do in his final maxed year. Another attempt in America? More but shorter races? I'm definitely not looking forward (yet) to face him

@WJ: Well the decision to change regions was made for me even before last transfers, with, as you point out, the Kuroedas and also Choi being targeted for the same. It was great that we were actually able to sign them! Region focus hasn't always been the top priority all these years, so let's see where that goes. Always nice to have regional riders in the team off course
@Fabianski: Glad you like them
Wilco's good results were mostly in the first two seasons (and in PCM 18). One of those was also in the CT, and even there he was often struggling to beat punchers with -3/4 hill stats! You can see the drop off in the third season in points when we came back to the PCT. We were very lucky to have the other leaders, especially Penasa, step up and save us from going down again. Was sure if would not work out with Wilco after that. Gave him enough chances really.
Benoot and Choi were great signings indeed, as you pointed out, and Benoot, even with training, far outdid my expectations from him! It is exciting that he can be trained further, but that depends on how other stuff happens in transfers. Not really sure how much of an extra differential, if any, that +1 hill can provide. Felt Choi could've scored even more points if not hamstrung by 21 stages in the ToA. He still performed excellently I guess, with 7th (Pro Halstatt, not really super suitable) as his worst result of all the races he attended. Not sure whether we'll go back to ToA, again that depends on how the team looks post transfers.

As always, love those history stat posts. Kelderman is obviously the face of the team history and he leads a few of the important stats but considering that he also brought a lot of frustration at times, the spots on the Philips/Sony/... Mount Rushmore might still be up for grabs. Maybe Tiesj will establish himself as THE Sony guy?
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!
