Maximize stats in Pro Cyclist?

What is the best way to maximize your total stats in a Pro Cyclist? Is it to evolve for example Stage Race to the max potential, then go on to Puncheur, Sprinter, Fighter etc. - or should you mix? What is the best way?

I find my Pro Cyclists to always be good in Stage Race, but they have zero acceleration, sprint and endurance ability for example.
