Spain Championships 2009

The French got the Champs Elysses. The Italians got part of the Giro di Lombardia - and the Spaniards get ... 6 laps around the Angliru!
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps1.png

This is SME Cycling's first race of the year and one of their riders, Elias, goes in the break. De la Fuente, Gutierrez Palacios, Grau, Martinez Trinidad, Gonzalez Capilla, Horrach and Lobato are with him
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps2.png

Before the top of the first ascent, de la Fuente has gone solo
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps3.png

On the 2nd ascent, Astarloza went on the attack
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps4.png

Pereiro also made a move towards the top on the same lap
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps5.png

Sevilla, Arroyo and Perez Sanchez then attacked on the 3rd climb
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps6.png

The peleton werent bothered though and the gaps grew
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps7.png

De la Fuente
+ 5'00 - Elias
+ 5'30 - Astarloza
+ 9'00 - Pereiro
+ 11'30 - Sevilla, Horrach
+ 13'00 - Arroyo, Perez Sanchez
+ 25'00 - Peleton

Sevilla pushed on up the climb and caught Pereiro
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps8.png

The climb was too much for de la Fuente, and in the descent he found himself caught by Mikel Astarloza
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps9.png

Astarloza soon left him behind and took a solo lead
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps10.png

Sevilla was chasing him though and around halfway up the fifth ascent, he had caught Astarloza
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps11.png

Around about this time, the riders in the peleton finally woke up. The lead had been up to 30 minutes, but now Gil leads the attacks
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps12.png

Intxausti, Lopez Garcia, Valverde, Mancebo and Gomez Marchante followed him. Valverde and Mancebo were the strongest
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps13.png

While up front, Sevilla is now alone
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps14.png

And the group of lead riders some 20 minutes back is thinning down a lot
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps15.png

Sevilla heads down the descent and with 16km to go - is he on for an unlikely victory?
+ 1'13 is Perez Sanchez
+ 6'32 is Arroyo
+ 8'52 is Astarloza
+ 10'35 is Pereiro
+ 16'07 is de la Fuente
+ 17'53 are Gomez Marchante, Contador, Valverde, Gil, Mancebo, Anton and Plaza

Sevilla might have his hopes dashed by Perez Sanchez, but having come close, the Erste rider seems unable to completely eradicate the gap
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps16.png

The pre-race favourites know that they need to go over a minute faster than Sevilla and Perez Sanchez per kilometre. Theyve left it late but are now turning the screw - however the gap is still 10'45 with 8.7km to go.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps17.png

Contador then attacks the group, getting a gap - but Valverde then makes a move to go straight past him
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps18.png

Contador rejoins Valverde and they are caught up again - only for Valverde to again go clear, this time with Igor Anton. Anton doesnt last long though, as they catch Arroyo.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps19.png

Valverde passes Perez Sanchez as Gomez Marchante looks to come across to him, but Sevilla is in sight!
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps20.png

With just 2.3km to go, and Valverde has caught Sevilla
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps21.png

Amazingly, Valverde still has strength left and bursts away once again, just as Gomez Marchante was beginning to look dangerous
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps22.png

He really dominated the final climb and takes the win. He won't be world champion next year, but at least he gets to wear the colours of Spain instead

Ruben Plaza has been the strongest Spanish time trialist all season. So it came as no surprise that he won today
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps24.png

The battle for 2nd was much more interesting - between Benat Intxausti and David Abal. Intxausti held a slight advantage at the first check, Abal had a slight advantage at the 2nd.

i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/MG09/spainchamps26.png

They ultimately finished on practically the same time, but Intxausti was a split second quicker and takes 2nd.
