Vuelta a Venezuela - Stage 7
niconico
No cobbled sections on today’s mountain so we should see thing happen a bit more by the book. Danielson and Pereiro Sio must have used a lot of energy yesterday and that can come back to haunt them, when we hit the final climb today which leads up to the finish line for more than 20 kilometres. Today riders like Medina, Chacon and Ochoa Quintero really need to come through because they will struggle in the time trial on stage 9.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0002-8.png

12 riders got away in today’s breaks. I say breaks because four riders couldn’t quite make the junction as they would trail the entire stage. In the first group we have Albert, Barberi, Colby, Costa, Del Nero, Rojas Diaz, Mori and Esmaeli.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0005-4.png

The four chasers were Sibila Romero, Perry, Tizza and Salamanca.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0007-6.png

Ernst & Young were of course not interested in giving the break too much leash.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0013-3.png

The first KoM Sprint, which was won by Del Nero was followed by a long descend and all of the sudden, there were some 55 kilometres to go. At this point the break had about 4 minutes on the pack, but with a climber like Rojas Diaz in the break, the peloton can not afford keep letting them extend the advantage.

Let’s fast forward to 23 kilometres to go, as the break now hits the foot of the final climb with about 4’45 on the peloton, this an outstanding chance for Rojas Diaz, to claim his team’s 3rd win of the race.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0015-4.png

Things quickly turn interesting in the break as the group is cut in half after just a few kilometres up the climb. Rojas Diaz, Mori, Costa and Del Nero are in the front group now! But more importantly, Oscar Pereiro Sio now goes off the front back in the pack!

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0017-3.png

Garate, Medina, Kohl and Colorado counter, but somehow none of them can get into Pereiro’s wheel, as he is just going way too fast!

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0020-4.png

Meanwhile, José Chacon seems reluctant to attack.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0019-4.png

Back at the front. Mori and Costa are dropping Rojas Diaz and Del Nero. Very surprising that Rojas Diaz can’t keep up.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0021-5.png

Kohl, Medina, Colorado and Garate are wasting a lot of time right now, as they have caught some of the early attackers, but are letting them relay, Pereiro is taking full advantage, and when Kohl finally takes the front with 17 kilometres left, Pereiro now leads them by over 2 minutes!

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0027-4.png
Big blunder from Kohl, Medina, Colorado and Garate have cost them dearly!

You’re now probably wondering, what about Danielson? Well finally with 15 kilometres to go he and Ochoa Quintero attacks. But still there’s no response from Chacon!

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0029-7.png

Pereiro has now caught the four riders who were dropped from the breakaway at the start of the climb. With 11 kilometres to go he is still 2 minutes behind Mori and Costa.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0036-3.png
Mori and Costa towards a major upset, perhaps?

Pereiro has 2’23 on the Medina Group, where Danielson and Ochoa Quintero have bridged up. The only absent favourite is now Chacon. He is in the pack, which is almost two minutes behind the Medina Group.

With 7.5 kilometres to go Pereiro has caught Mori and Costa, but he has to take a rest as he is now riding behind Mori. Danielson, knowing he can capitalize immediately sets off with Kohl trying to go with him.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0039-1.png

But as we hit the final very steep part of the climb with 3 kilometres to go, Pereiro has left Mori and Costa behind. It’s only steep for one more kilometre though, as there is a KoM Sprint about 2 kilometres from the finish. If he gets there, he’s definitely going to win.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0042.png

Kohl has caught Danielson and they are now 3 kilometres from the finish, they trail Pereiro by 1’26!

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0043.png

Behind them we have Garate, Ochoa Quintero and Medina, they are 52 seconds behind.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0045.png

Chacon is going to be out of GC contention after today, he still hasn’t done anything. In fact, Aleksandr Efimkin is Champion’s leading rider right now. He is far behind though.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0046.png

Pereiro crosses the KoM Sprint.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0047.png

And he takes the stage in convincing fashion!

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0048-1.png

Danielson and Kohl caught Mori towards the end, but what a performance by Benfica’s Rui Costa, as he comes in 2nd place!

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0049.png

Danielson outsprints Kohl for 3rd. They come in at 1’32.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0050-1.png

Mori then holds on for 5th, before Ochoa Quintero and Garate leaves Medina behind on the home stretch taking 6th and 7th respectively.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0051-1.png

So surprisingly Ochoa Quintero is the best Venezuelean. Speaking of Venezueleans, where is Chacon?

He comes in at 4’48! Surely he can’t win this now.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0052-1.png

Another great mountain stage has come to its conclusion here in Venezuela, and we had a surprise winner today. Nobody can doubt Pereiro’s strenght, but his opponents might have done better. Let’s not take anything away from Pereiro’s performance though. He had a hell of a ride today!
