Welcome to day number 18 of the 2022 Tour of America! We're still in California, but after countless days in the mountains, we're getting a flat day for once! We're in Porterville for the start of today's stage - just outside Kings Canyon where we were yesterday.
Porterville is located on the Tule River, at the base of the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada. And despite the frequent earthquakes in the area, we don't expect a shakeup of the GC today. If the riders had some free time, some of them might make the trip to the nearby Lake Success, either to celebrate, or hoping to drink some successful water there.
For once, the route is rather direct from start to finish. And we might get some interesting action almost directly after the start, as we'll reach the first out of two 4th category hills - Lewis Hill - after 4.7km already! 5 points are on offer for the first on top - and 5 points is the difference between Hamilton and Hoelgaard in the KoM standings...
The general direction of the stage is north-west, and 42km into that trajectory the riders will already be on top of the second categorized climb, Rocky Hill. From there, it's 100km of flat roads, passing through Visalia (68km) and Reedly (104km) where we'll have an intermediate sprint each, and finally arriving in Fresno after a rather short stage of just above 140km.
What can be said about that city? It's in the San Joaquin Valley, just like Porterville, and it's the largest city in the greater Central Valley region. About half a million people live here, which makes it California's most populous inland city. Quite big for what started as a railway station 150 years ago.
Fresno was originally inhabited by the Yokuts and Miwok peoples, before the Europeans arrive some 250 years back. The Spanish were the first ones to arrive here, and hence the city (and the county) got a Spanish name - Fresno, which means ash tree. There's indeed an abundance of ash trees lining the San Joaquin River.
If you like trees, you'll find delight in the Woodward Park, the largest Regional Park in the Central Valley, including - among many other attractions - a Japanese Garden and an amphitheatre. Or you could visit Fresno Chaffee Zoo with 190 species. Or - my favorite - the Forestiere Underground Gardens, a vast subterranean network carved by some crazy Sicilian.
Undergound might be a good keyword for the GC riders and other climbers, who may want to stay invisible today while getting some "active rest". But it's definitely not what the sprinters will be looking for - they had to survive 7 consecutive mountainous and hilly stages before finally getting another chance to shine!
And they'll be highly motivated for sure, given that it's their second last chance of the race to get a stage win. And some of them can still realistically target the sprint jersey - so it would be a surprise to see the breakaway take this stage. So the obvious favorites are the men with thick legs - with Haller joining green jersey favorites Eislers and Van Asbroeck on top of the list. Bennett, Coutinho and Boudat are next. And the bookies definitely haven't learnt their lesson yet, listing again both Aniolkowski and Lutsyshyn, alongside Nizzolo and Mareczko.
5 different sprinters have won a total of 7 stages so far - let's find out what we'll get today!
What happened so far
It's a mostly sunny, yet windy day here in California. We've got wind from the south, which means that we'll mostly have tailwind or crosswind from the left on today's zig-zag route.
And Hoelgaard apparently decided that he needed some rest today, as he was in the last positions of the pack at the startline. A big chance for Hamilton to extend his KoM lead?
There indeed was an Amaysim rider among the first attackers - however, instead of attacking on his own, the KoM leader sent teammate Bayly up front. The other early attackers were Fenn, Jallays and Richardson.
There were plenty of other attacks, which triggered the sprinter teams to chase - and so only Bayly survived the first ascent ahead of the pack:

So all Hoelgaard could do today would be to tie Hamilton for the lead by winning the second KoM sprint of the day - but given the pretty large gap in the GC between them, the Aussie was unlikely to lose the jersey today.
Of course, leaving Bayly all alone up front wasn't an option for the other teams, and so Jallays tried again. This time, he had Alexander and Biermans with him.
And McCormick are clearly doing well in showing their jersey in their home race, as they once again got two riders in the BotD, with Hecht joining Eriksson. Norbert was latching on as well.
The sprinter teams were happy with that constellation, and so we soon had a 7-rider breakaway of the day:
Jallays
Hecht
Alexander
Norbert
Bayly
Eriksson
Biermans
Neither of them was dangerous in any standings, with Alexander having most KoM points so far (21) but already out of contention for the jersey, and Bayly having the most sprint points (26) and behing highest in GC (56th). The only danger of this group would be for Amaysim's team standings lead, given the double McCormick representation.
But the pack - mostly led by Van Tricht, Freuler, Moazemi and Kipkemboi - was just controlling them, trailing by 2'30" to 3'00" for most of the stage. They definitely knew that all of those ahead were at least decent rouleurs, so they didn't get much leeway.
There wasn't the least trace of a fight for KoM points on Rocky Hill, with everyone knowing it would be insignificant anyway. Norbert happened to cross the line first.

The peloton was trailing by 2'45". Xero no longer helped with the chase, instead we had a massive Crabbe presence at the front of the pack. And, as said before, some Kraftwerk rider as well - maybe they finally agreed on supporting Haller today?
As the leaders reached the intermediate sprint in Visalia, the pack had started closing in more seriously, with the gap dropping below 2'30" for the first time in a long while. The wind would likely be the only factor that might help the group get to the line.

And now as the riders are approaching the second sprint point, let's join the live action!
LIVE +++ LIVE +++ LIVE
Both groups currently are on the longest straight section of the stage - a tailwind section with the wind blowing at 20km/h, so the speed is pretty high. We have roughly 60km to go, and we can still see a strong Crabbe presence in the chase, with Van Tricht, Campenaerts, Manfredi and Bardet. The other teams currently are watching and waiting.
The breakaway is still 2'13" ahead, not much has changed over the last couple of kilometers.
And neither does anything change on the next 20km. Norbert is the first to reach the sprint point in Reedly.

Now Assa Abloy are also looking pretty determined, with the trio of Mosca, Freuler and Gallopin (re-)joining the chase. Crabbe still have the same four riders, with Kraftwerk now participating with Rumac and Moazemi.
40km to go, the gap is down to 1'52" already.
Another 20km later, the pack's deficit is only 52" - and one explanation is that they're riding really hard on those crosswind sections! We've seen the pack almost splitting up several times already - and in case this should happen, Van Asbroeck and pretty much every GC rider would be screwed! Most sprinters are up front - and so is Bennett!
15 kilometers left! We've again seen splits occurring and being undone, but so far no rider has been definitely dropped from the pack.
The breakaway group is still at full strength as well - although Alexander and Hecht haven't been taking turns for quite a while already. They'd better do so, if the group should have even a tiny chance of making it, as they're just 36" ahead now!
10km (and three 90-degree turns) left, and the breakaway's advantage is down to 25 seconds!
The GC riders have learnt their lesson from those temporary splits, as they're all in the first third of the pack now - and so are the sprinters. It looks like an easy catch for the pack - what do the escapees have left?
Not much, it seems. Under the 5km sign, they're almost caught by Gallopin. And look at that Kraftwerk presence up front, they're definitely committed to preparing the sprint for Haller today!
And we also get notice about another split, one that could persist - with the highest placed GC riders on the wrong side being Roman (22nd) and Hibatullah (25th). Definitely not the best race for the Cedevita rider, while the Indonesian probably won't care as long as Campero is up front. And he is.
Alexander, Hecht and Eriksson now are making their move with 3.5km to go! Unfortunately for them, we'll have crosswinds on the last 3 kilometers - with tailwinds this attack would have way better chances to stick!
Behind, Coutinho just has one leadout with Mosca, while an entire Kraftwerk train is taking shape on the other road side!
2.5km to go - and the men in red have surged to the front after the final turn of the stage! Eriksson, Hecht and Alexander are still 13" ahead - but it's still a long way to go for them! Jallays, Biermans, Bayly and Norbert have just been caught.
Most top sprinters are in the first positions already - except for Van Asbroeck, whom we can see to the left, as well as Bennett, Zariff, Nizzolo and Feiereisen!
And with 2km to go, the Kraftwerk train - consisting of Rumac, De Buyst and Haller - surgest past the three remaining escapees!
Due to the crosswinds, there's just one very long line of sprinters - they're lined up in this order:
Van Asbroeck has got free roads ahead - but he's probably too far back! And remember that Eislers and Coutinho are just 8 and 26 points behind the green jersey, with 50 points available for the stage win!
Zariff, Nizzolo, Bennett and Feiereisen are behind Mareczko - but they still have a small gap to make up for!
Rumac is done with his leadout task under the red kite, now it's De Buyst's job to bring Haller up to speed!
It's an impressive line of sprinters there on the right road side - but those who are further down in the line will have a hard time overtaking all of those ahead!
Christensen and Van Asbroeck have all the space they want - can they use it well?
700m to go, and De Buyst is still leading out Haller - this looks like some far better timing than on stage 2! Some sprinters are leaving the slipstream of the long line now, in an attempt to gain some spots!
Someone who looks to be doing pretty well is Van Asbroeck, who's currently by far the fastest man out there! Christensen, on the other hand, was probably too optimistic and is already looking spent.
500m to go, and Haller is still behind his leadout! Can't he go faster, or does he just want to wait for the last possible moment to launch?
Meanwhile, Coutinho is almost past Eislers already, with Lutsyshyn and Boudat in the next positions.
Then it's Moschetti and Mareczko, followed by Boivin, Stash, Van Asbroeck and Krieger. Itami is keeping up as well, while there's a gap opening to Berger behind the Japanese!
De Buyst is done, now Haller has the lead with 300m to go! Coutinho has managed to squeeze in between the Austrian and Eislers, thereby pushing the latter out of Haller's slipstream!
Boudat and Lutsyshyn are next, followed by Moschetti, Mareczko, Boivin, Van Asbroeck, Krieger, Itami and Stash.
Just 200m to go! Haller is still holding on, and Coutinho seems to be unable to pass him! Eislers, Boudat and Lutsyshyn are currently fighting for 3rd, whereas Moschetti, Mareczko, Boivin and Van Asbroeck are in the next line.
100m to the line, and it's still looking good for Haller! Coutinho is a clear 2nd, with Eislers still battling it out against Lutsyshyn and Boudat for 3rd!
Moschetti and Boivin seem to be fading, leaving just Mareczko and Van Asbroeck in the fight for 6th - however, Krieger is pretty fast as well and is trying to find some room in between them to squeeze through!
Not much has changed with 50m left - can Haller indeed make it today?
Oh yes, he can! After not having had a single good sprint in five attempts before, Marco Haller strikes back in style, winning his 11th Tour of America stage - and the first one in 2022! Congratulations!
Lionel Coutinho easily holds onto 2nd, but wasn't quite strong enough for the win today.
And who is 3rd? After looking at the finish line photos for quite some time, the officials conclude that Ingus Eislers takes the final podium spot of the day - for what is his 6th podium of the race already! Roman Lutsyshyn and Thomas Boudat have to settle for 4th and 5th.
While Jakub Mareczko and Tom Van Asbroeck in 6th and 7th are pretty clear, deciding on the outcome of the fight for 8th place again is a good occupation for the race officials. It looks like Alexander Krieger just edged out Matteo Moschetti and Guillaume Boivin, who round out the Top 10.
Itami, Stash and Berger are next, whereas Bennett, Zariff, Nizzolo and Feiereisen pay for their bad positioning by never getting in the mix at all. One more chance for the sprinters to do it better!
Ah, remember that a split was mentioned earlier? Indeed, only the first 103 riders finished inside the pack, with 81 missing out. Campenaerts and Van Tricht lead them home - and those behind can actually be thankful that the timekeepers awarded them the same time as those two. 1'19" lost for all of the stragglers.
For once, Marco Haller had no worries of bad positioning or even getting gapped, as his team did an amazing job today to finally lead him to a stage win!
And it's a historic one, actually - he's only the third rider after Peter Stetina (2013, 2015, 2016, 2018) and Natnael Berhane (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019) to win at least one stage in four Tour of America editions (2018, 2020, 2021, 2022)! And moreover, with his 11th stage win he's now tied with Raúl Granjel Cabrera for the 2nd most stage wins - one win short of Franco Pellizotti, who won 12!!! stages in the inaugural edition of this race! Hats off to the Austrian!
Unlike the Kraftwerk rider, Lionel Coutinho and Ingus Eislers already know the Tour of America 2022 podium pretty well, as it's the 4th Top 3 result for the former (but his first 2nd place), and even the 6th for the Latvian! Good job - and for once, all chasing teams get rewared, which is great to see honestly!
Although at one point it looked like George Bennett might extend his GC lead even further - when all other GC contenders were caught behind in a split - the Top 20 positions finally saw no change at all.
The Kiwi will tackle tomorrow's final mountain stage of the race with a 1'36" advantage over Ki Ho Choi, while Aleksandr Pluchkin trails by 1'59".
None of the top contenders for the green jersey won the stage today, and our leader is... still Tom Van Asbroeck, despite finishing only 7th! However, we can't quite explain this, as Ingus Eislers now ties the Belgian's 172 points - and is more than an hour ahead in the GC! Maybe the number of stage wins plays a role - the officials refused to answer any questions.
What is sure is that Lionel Coutinho is 3rd, with an 8 points deficit. Bennett is 13 points behind, which pushes the door wide open for him to take green on the next two days. However, if one of the Top 3 wins the final stage in San Francisco, the points jersey will be his - that's for sure!
Just like for the green jersey, the fight for the polka dots is still pretty much open. Although there are not four but just two (realistic) contenders left, Lucas Hamilton and Daniel Hoelgaard are separated by only 5 points.
Hermann Pernsteiner is 3rd, 28 points down. With only 52 points still on offer, only Bennett, Magnusson and Pluchkin still have some (very) theoretical chances of winning the jersey besides the Top 3.
Just like most other GC riders, white jersey Georg Zimmermann was gapped at one point, but he came back and therefore easily defended his 6 minutes advantage over Pascal Eenkhoorn. We'll see whether Alex Hoehn can make up for his 1'36" deficit to 2nd place in the next two days.
And that wraps up today's stage 18 of the 2022 Tour of America! Only three days are left - thereof two decisive ones for the GC riders! I hope you'll join us again tomorrow for one hell of a ride up to Mount Diablo - see you!
