Welcome to day number 18 of the 2022 Tour of America! We're still in California, but after countless days in the mountains, we're getting a flat day for once! We're in Porterville for the start of today's stage - just outside Kings Canyon where we were yesterday.

Porterville is located on the Tule River, at the base of the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada. And despite the frequent earthquakes in the area, we don't expect a shakeup of the GC today. If the riders had some free time, some of them might make the trip to the nearby Lake Success, either to celebrate, or hoping to drink some successful water there.

For once, the route is rather direct from start to finish. And we might get some interesting action almost directly after the start, as we'll reach the first out of two 4th category hills - Lewis Hill - after 4.7km already! 5 points are on offer for the first on top - and 5 points is the difference between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Hamilton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard in the KoM standings...

The general direction of the stage is north-west, and 42km into that trajectory the riders will already be on top of the second categorized climb, Rocky Hill. From there, it's 100km of flat roads, passing through Visalia (68km) and Reedly (104km) where we'll have an intermediate sprint each, and finally arriving in Fresno after a rather short stage of just above 140km.

What can be said about that city? It's in the San Joaquin Valley, just like Porterville, and it's the largest city in the greater Central Valley region. About half a million people live here, which makes it California's most populous inland city. Quite big for what started as a railway station 150 years ago.

Fresno was originally inhabited by the Yokuts and Miwok peoples, before the Europeans arrive some 250 years back. The Spanish were the first ones to arrive here, and hence the city (and the county) got a Spanish name - Fresno, which means ash tree. There's indeed an abundance of ash trees lining the San Joaquin River.

If you like trees, you'll find delight in the Woodward Park, the largest Regional Park in the Central Valley, including - among many other attractions - a Japanese Garden and an amphitheatre. Or you could visit Fresno Chaffee Zoo with 190 species. Or - my favorite - the Forestiere Underground Gardens, a vast subterranean network carved by some crazy Sicilian.

Undergound might be a good keyword for the GC riders and other climbers, who may want to stay invisible today while getting some "active rest". But it's definitely not what the sprinters will be looking for - they had to survive 7 consecutive mountainous and hilly stages before finally getting another chance to shine!

And they'll be highly motivated for sure, given that it's their second last chance of the race to get a stage win. And some of them can still realistically target the sprint jersey - so it would be a surprise to see the breakaway take this stage. So the obvious favorites are the men with thick legs - with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Haller joining green jersey favorites pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Eislers and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Van Asbroeck on top of the list. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gla.png Bennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Coutinho and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bee.png Boudat are next. And the bookies definitely haven't learnt their lesson yet, listing again both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn, alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bns.png Nizzolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Mareczko.

5 different sprinters have won a total of 7 stages so far - let's find out what we'll get today!

What happened so far

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_01.jpg

It's a mostly sunny, yet windy day here in California. We've got wind from the south, which means that we'll mostly have tailwind or crosswind from the left on today's zig-zag route.

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard apparently decided that he needed some rest today, as he was in the last positions of the pack at the startline. A big chance for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Hamilton to extend his KoM lead?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_02.jpg

There indeed was an pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Amaysim rider among the first attackers - however, instead of attacking on his own, the KoM leader sent teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Bayly up front. The other early attackers were pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Fenn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Jallays and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Richardson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_03.jpg

There were plenty of other attacks, which triggered the sprinter teams to chase - and so only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Bayly survived the first ascent ahead of the pack:

KoM - Lewis Hill (4th)

1.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Bayly5 (17)
2.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Richardson3 (3)
3.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Fenn1 (2)

So all pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard could do today would be to tie pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Hamilton for the lead by winning the second KoM sprint of the day - but given the pretty large gap in the GC between them, the Aussie was unlikely to lose the jersey today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_04.jpg

Of course, leaving pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Bayly all alone up front wasn't an option for the other teams, and so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Jallays tried again. This time, he had pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Alexander and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Biermans with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_05.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png McCormick are clearly doing well in showing their jersey in their home race, as they once again got two riders in the BotD, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Hecht joining pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Eriksson. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Norbert was latching on as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_06.jpg

The sprinter teams were happy with that constellation, and so we soon had a 7-rider breakaway of the day:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Jallayspcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Hechtpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Alexanderpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Norbert
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Baylypcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Erikssonpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Biermans

Neither of them was dangerous in any standings, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Alexander having most KoM points so far (21) but already out of contention for the jersey, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Bayly having the most sprint points (26) and behing highest in GC (56th). The only danger of this group would be for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Amaysim's team standings lead, given the double pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png McCormick representation.

But the pack - mostly led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Van Tricht, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Freuler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Moazemi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Kipkemboi - was just controlling them, trailing by 2'30" to 3'00" for most of the stage. They definitely knew that all of those ahead were at least decent rouleurs, so they didn't get much leeway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_07.jpg

There wasn't the least trace of a fight for KoM points on Rocky Hill, with everyone knowing it would be insignificant anyway. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Norbert happened to cross the line first.

KoM - Rocky Hill (4th)

1.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Norbert5 (5)
2.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Hecht3 (12)
3.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Bayly1 (18)

The peloton was trailing by 2'45". pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Xero no longer helped with the chase, instead we had a massive pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Crabbe presence at the front of the pack. And, as said before, some pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk rider as well - maybe they finally agreed on supporting pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Haller today?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_08.jpg

As the leaders reached the intermediate sprint in Visalia, the pack had started closing in more seriously, with the gap dropping below 2'30" for the first time in a long while. The wind would likely be the only factor that might help the group get to the line.

Sprint - Visalia

1.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Jallays10 (19)-6"
2.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Biermans6 (12)-4"
3.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Eriksson4 (28)-2"
4.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Norbert2 (2)
5.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Bayly1 (27)

And now as the riders are approaching the second sprint point, let's join the live action!

LIVE +++ LIVE +++ LIVE

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_09.jpg

Both groups currently are on the longest straight section of the stage - a tailwind section with the wind blowing at 20km/h, so the speed is pretty high. We have roughly 60km to go, and we can still see a strong pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Crabbe presence in the chase, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Van Tricht, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Campenaerts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Manfredi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Bardet. The other teams currently are watching and waiting.

The breakaway is still 2'13" ahead, not much has changed over the last couple of kilometers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_10.jpg

And neither does anything change on the next 20km. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Norbert is the first to reach the sprint point in Reedly.

Sprint - Reedly

1.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Norbert10 (12)-6"
2.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Bayly6 (33)-4"
3.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Jallays4 (23)-2"
4.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Biermans2 (14)
5.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Eriksson1 (29)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_11.jpg

Now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Assa Abloy are also looking pretty determined, with the trio of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Mosca, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Freuler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Gallopin (re-)joining the chase. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Crabbe still have the same four riders, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk now participating with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Rumac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Moazemi.

40km to go, the gap is down to 1'52" already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_12.jpg

Another 20km later, the pack's deficit is only 52" - and one explanation is that they're riding really hard on those crosswind sections! We've seen the pack almost splitting up several times already - and in case this should happen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Van Asbroeck and pretty much every GC rider would be screwed! Most sprinters are up front - and so is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Bennett!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_13.jpg

15 kilometers left! We've again seen splits occurring and being undone, but so far no rider has been definitely dropped from the pack.

The breakaway group is still at full strength as well - although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Alexander and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Hecht haven't been taking turns for quite a while already. They'd better do so, if the group should have even a tiny chance of making it, as they're just 36" ahead now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_14.jpg

10km (and three 90-degree turns) left, and the breakaway's advantage is down to 25 seconds!

The GC riders have learnt their lesson from those temporary splits, as they're all in the first third of the pack now - and so are the sprinters. It looks like an easy catch for the pack - what do the escapees have left?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_15.jpg

Not much, it seems. Under the 5km sign, they're almost caught by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Gallopin. And look at that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk presence up front, they're definitely committed to preparing the sprint for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Haller today!

And we also get notice about another split, one that could persist - with the highest placed GC riders on the wrong side being pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Roman (22nd) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Hibatullah (25th). Definitely not the best race for the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Cedevita rider, while the Indonesian probably won't care as long as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Campero is up front. And he is.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Alexander, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Hecht and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Eriksson now are making their move with 3.5km to go! Unfortunately for them, we'll have crosswinds on the last 3 kilometers - with tailwinds this attack would have way better chances to stick!

Behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Coutinho just has one leadout with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Mosca, while an entire pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk train is taking shape on the other road side!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_17.jpg

2.5km to go - and the men in red have surged to the front after the final turn of the stage! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Eriksson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Hecht and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Alexander are still 13" ahead - but it's still a long way to go for them! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Jallays, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Biermans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Bayly and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Norbert have just been caught.

Most top sprinters are in the first positions already - except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Van Asbroeck, whom we can see to the left, as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gla.png Bennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Zariff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bns.png Nizzolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Feiereisen!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_18.jpg

And with 2km to go, the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk train - consisting of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Rumac, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png De Buyst and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Haller - surgest past the three remaining escapees!

Due to the crosswinds, there's just one very long line of sprinters - they're lined up in this order:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Haller
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Eislers
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Coutinho
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bee.png Boudat
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pns.png Moschetti
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Stash
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lec.png Boivin
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/caa.png Itami
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Mareczko
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Krieger
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/esc.png Berger

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Van Asbroeck has got free roads ahead - but he's probably too far back! And remember that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Eislers and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Coutinho are just 8 and 26 points behind the green jersey, with 50 points available for the stage win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Zariff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bns.png Nizzolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gla.png Bennett and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Feiereisen are behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Mareczko - but they still have a small gap to make up for!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Rumac is done with his leadout task under the red kite, now it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png De Buyst's job to bring pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Haller up to speed!

It's an impressive line of sprinters there on the right road side - but those who are further down in the line will have a hard time overtaking all of those ahead!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Christensen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Van Asbroeck have all the space they want - can they use it well?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_20.jpg

700m to go, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png De Buyst is still leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Haller - this looks like some far better timing than on stage 2! Some sprinters are leaving the slipstream of the long line now, in an attempt to gain some spots!

Someone who looks to be doing pretty well is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Van Asbroeck, who's currently by far the fastest man out there! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Christensen, on the other hand, was probably too optimistic and is already looking spent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_21.jpg

500m to go, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Haller is still behind his leadout! Can't he go faster, or does he just want to wait for the last possible moment to launch?

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Coutinho is almost past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Eislers already, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bee.png Boudat in the next positions.

Then it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pns.png Moschetti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Mareczko, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lec.png Boivin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Stash, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Van Asbroeck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Krieger. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/caa.png Itami is keeping up as well, while there's a gap opening to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/esc.png Berger behind the Japanese!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png De Buyst is done, now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Haller has the lead with 300m to go! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Coutinho has managed to squeeze in between the Austrian and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Eislers, thereby pushing the latter out of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Haller's slipstream!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bee.png Boudat and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn are next, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pns.png Moschetti, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Mareczko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lec.png Boivin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Van Asbroeck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Krieger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/caa.png Itami and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Stash.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_23.jpg

Just 200m to go! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Haller is still holding on, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Coutinho seems to be unable to pass him! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Eislers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bee.png Boudat and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn are currently fighting for 3rd, whereas pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pns.png Moschetti, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Mareczko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lec.png Boivin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Van Asbroeck are in the next line.

100m to the line, and it's still looking good for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Haller! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Coutinho is a clear 2nd, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Eislers still battling it out against pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bee.png Boudat for 3rd!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pns.png Moschetti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lec.png Boivin seem to be fading, leaving just pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Mareczko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Van Asbroeck in the fight for 6th - however, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Krieger is pretty fast as well and is trying to find some room in between them to squeeze through!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_25.jpg

Not much has changed with 50m left - can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Haller indeed make it today?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_26.jpg

Oh yes, he can! After not having had a single good sprint in five attempts before, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Marco Haller strikes back in style, winning his 11th Tour of America stage - and the first one in 2022! Congratulations!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Lionel Coutinho easily holds onto 2nd, but wasn't quite strong enough for the win today.

And who is 3rd? After looking at the finish line photos for quite some time, the officials conclude that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Ingus Eislers takes the final podium spot of the day - for what is his 6th podium of the race already! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Roman Lutsyshyn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bee.png Thomas Boudat have to settle for 4th and 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_28.jpg

While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Jakub Mareczko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Tom Van Asbroeck in 6th and 7th are pretty clear, deciding on the outcome of the fight for 8th place again is a good occupation for the race officials. It looks like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Alexander Krieger just edged out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pns.png Matteo Moschetti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lec.png Guillaume Boivin, who round out the Top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/caa.png Itami, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Stash and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/esc.png Berger are next, whereas pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gla.png Bennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Zariff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bns.png Nizzolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Feiereisen pay for their bad positioning by never getting in the mix at all. One more chance for the sprinters to do it better!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_29.jpg

Ah, remember that a split was mentioned earlier? Indeed, only the first 103 riders finished inside the pack, with 81 missing out. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Campenaerts and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Van Tricht lead them home - and those behind can actually be thankful that the timekeepers awarded them the same time as those two. 1'19" lost for all of the stragglers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_30.jpg

For once, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Marco Haller had no worries of bad positioning or even getting gapped, as his team did an amazing job today to finally lead him to a stage win!

And it's a historic one, actually - he's only the third rider after Peter Stetina (2013, 2015, 2016, 2018) and Natnael Berhane (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019) to win at least one stage in four Tour of America editions (2018, 2020, 2021, 2022)! And moreover, with his 11th stage win he's now tied with Raúl Granjel Cabrera for the 2nd most stage wins - one win short of Franco Pellizotti, who won 12!!! stages in the inaugural edition of this race! Hats off to the Austrian!

Unlike the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk rider, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Lionel Coutinho and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Ingus Eislers already know the Tour of America 2022 podium pretty well, as it's the 4th Top 3 result for the former (but his first 2nd place), and even the 6th for the Latvian! Good job - and for once, all chasing teams get rewared, which is great to see honestly!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_31.jpg

Although at one point it looked like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png George Bennett might extend his GC lead even further - when all other GC contenders were caught behind in a split - the Top 20 positions finally saw no change at all.

The Kiwi will tackle tomorrow's final mountain stage of the race with a 1'36" advantage over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Ki Ho Choi, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Aleksandr Pluchkin trails by 1'59".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_32.jpg

None of the top contenders for the green jersey won the stage today, and our leader is... still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Tom Van Asbroeck, despite finishing only 7th! However, we can't quite explain this, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Ingus Eislers now ties the Belgian's 172 points - and is more than an hour ahead in the GC! Maybe the number of stage wins plays a role - the officials refused to answer any questions.

What is sure is that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Lionel Coutinho is 3rd, with an 8 points deficit. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Bennett is 13 points behind, which pushes the door wide open for him to take green on the next two days. However, if one of the Top 3 wins the final stage in San Francisco, the points jersey will be his - that's for sure!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_33.jpg

Just like for the green jersey, the fight for the polka dots is still pretty much open. Although there are not four but just two (realistic) contenders left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Lucas Hamilton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Daniel Hoelgaard are separated by only 5 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Hermann Pernsteiner is 3rd, 28 points down. With only 52 points still on offer, only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Bennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Magnusson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin still have some (very) theoretical chances of winning the jersey besides the Top 3.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_34.jpg

Just like most other GC riders, white jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Georg Zimmermann was gapped at one point, but he came back and therefore easily defended his 6 minutes advantage over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Pascal Eenkhoorn. We'll see whether pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Alex Hoehn can make up for his 1'36" deficit to 2nd place in the next two days.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/ToA/S18/mg22_toa_s18_35.jpg

Most teams had at least three riders in the first group - at least the Top 10 did, and so there aren't any notable changes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Amaysim Cervélo take a 3'15" lead over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png McCormick Pro Cycling into the final mountain stage, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Sauber Petronas Racing trail by 4'27".

And that wraps up today's stage 18 of the 2022 Tour of America! Only three days are left - thereof two decisive ones for the GC riders! I hope you'll join us again tomorrow for one hell of a ride up to Mount Diablo - see you!
