The longest, but probably most boring stage awaits us today. 172 km mostly flat, but the organizers managed to sneak in a category 3 climb. No uphill finish today.
Mountain leader Lietaer opens up the attacks. The points are available in the first 50 km of the stage. De Tier is with him.
After many tries Pajur and Johansen are the other duo who manage to open a gap on the peloton.
Lietaer adds 6 points to his KOM tally bringing him one step closer to winning the classification.
Johansen comes out on top for the first of three intermediate sprints. Between him and Pajur they could potentially be fighting for his wears the white jersey tomorrow.
Lietaer wins the 2nd sprint with 72 km to the finish. The peloton is at 2'42''.
Lietaer wins the final sprint as well. I just remembered he was 3rd overall at only 10'', he's now the virtual race leader on the road!
20 km to go the peloton is at 52'', can they catch the breakaway earlier than yesterday?
Not by much! There are only 4 km left.
2.5 km to go. Kanter is already right at the front, 2nd on the road, but we don't see many sprinters in the first 20 positions or so. Just Guerao and Willwohl.
Kanter has to start his sprint under the flamme rouge. Guerao goes to follow, but again the other sprinters are not here.
Kanter leads with 400 m left ahead of Guerao and Willwohl.
Bizarre finish today, but Max Kanter won't care. This must be the easiest win of his career! Willwohl pips Guerao for 2nd place.
Stocker leads in the 'non-sprinters'. Race leader Saber finished 9th.
Lietaer did enough in the intermediate sprints to indeed take the overall top spot. We sure didn't see that one coming! He of course also leads the KOM classification. Kanter's stage win nets him the points lead as well as another day as the best young rider. We expect that to change after the time-trial tomorrow.
