It seems lots of riders wish to get away, but they all end up getting caught
Until Peter Stetina made his move.
After so many riders had tried, it took a solo attack to work
Three riders were to also get away
Matt Booth is followed by two unsigned riders: Barrio and Schreurs
They would never catch Stetina but nevertheless gained a large gap on the peleton
Australia are controlling the situation behind
Before trying a sneaky move themselves. Sulzberger, Dempster, Ford and Goss are joined by Gautier
Martinez tries to bridge across
They are all brought back though
As in the break, Schreurs leaves Booth and Barrio behind
Lets not forget the lone leader, Stetina
While in the peleton, Wes Suzlberger is setting a strong tempo stretching the peleton - dropping many and putting others into difficulty
The group is wittled down to as few as 35 but the pace lets off again and 10 riders get back into the fold
On the last hill, Rigoberto Uran attacks!
Ulissi and Vanspeybouck counter but cannot match the Colombian, while Booth and Barrio are caught
So we now enter the Champs Elysses. Stetina leads Schreurs by 4 minutes. Uran is close to the Dutchman with the peleton trailing by a minute and a half
Uran catches Schreurs but is losing time on the peleton
They are infact both caught as the riders enter the tunnel for the first time
Coming out of the tunnel, theres an attack from Nico Keinath
Uran and Ulissi try to counter, as does Kruijswijk and it is the Dutchman who gets the furthest, with Keinath also getting a slight gap on the peleton
Spanish hopes ended with the puncture of Florentino Marquez
As things do not look good for Stetina, the fast pace has lowered his gap, and he will soon be caught
Kruijswijk catches him after the tunnel as Gatis Smukulis attacks
Smukulis replaces Stetina in Kruijswijk's company, but its going to be a tough ask
It all comes together and it now seems set to be a sprint finish. Cesare di Maggio leads the peleton into the tunnel for the last time
And he leads coming out of it. There is a strong Cuban presence at the front too - Raul Granjel Cabrera must fancy his chances
But no! He has hit the red zone and is out of contention!
Teammate Martinez keeps at the front, but the Australians look dangerous
Sulzberger hits the front, and is that Matt Goss behind him?
Yes it is! Sulzberger gives his teammate a huge lead as Goss makes his move. Anyone who might have challenged Sulzberger at least was too badly positioned, but surely noone can challenge Goss.
Goss is the new Under 23 World Champion!
Sulzberger eases to 2nd, a great result for the Aussies
Its a close sprint for 3rd, and De Gendt takes his 2nd Bronze of the World Championships, ahead of Claeys, Martinez and Docker
The days most aggressive rider rolled in 7 minutes later. Peter Stetina eventually finishes 47th
Matt Goss downs the rainbow stripes on the podim for the one and only time, he will turn 23 in less than a month and a half
