Stage 5 is another chance for the sprinters. Not much for the breakaway today with a single KOM, unless the they catch the sprinters teams unprepared and win the stage.
Campbell and Nareklishvili make the first move.
The peloton was going at a fast pace for a while, but maybe they finally settled with allowing two more riders to join the break. Turgis and Nych.
Nych wins the lone KOM sprint as the original two escapees suffer from their previous efforts even on this gentle gradient.
They do regroup though and get another companion in Moricz. The gap to the peloton is 3 minutes.
The intermediate sprints are of no value to these riders. Less than a 100 km left, the peloton is only 2'24'' behind.
The gap is down to 1'14'' thanks to the work from ISA, Tinkoff and Vesuvio.
The breakaway is done just before the 10 km to go banner. It's not exactly a flat run-in to the finish line so positioning should be important in the sprint.
We're on a bit of a downhill now with speeds over 70 km/h, with 1.7 km left and we see Degenkolb trying to follow his lead outs Harrison and Santos. Van der Lijke and Bol are left chasing them down.
Not really much of a lead out though as Degenkolb starts sprinting under the flamme rouge. Van der Lijke is closing him down, but he's been in the wind for a while as well.
Degenkolb is still in the lead with 500 m to go. Samolenkov and Hsu are leading the field of the other sprinters.
Degenkolb is out of gas! It's Van der Lijke vs Bol for the win.
We knew a Dutchman was going to win and it's Cees Bol who takes the stage victory!
Degenkolb just manages to hold on to 3rd place ahead of Samolenkov and Hsu.
Gamper continues to lead the GC. In fact the only change in any classification today is Van der Lijke who will be wearing green tomorrow.
