Stage 2 Report

Stage 2 of the Balkans International is similar to Stage 1 in including a mix of shorter and longer climbs. Today a Cat 1, 2 Cat 2’s, a Cat 3 and 2 Cat 4’s across 170k. Also 1 sprint point. The big difference versus yesterday is that the last 30k are mostly downhill and the finish is flat, so expect a big group at the finish

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png De Bie once again tops the favorites, hopefully it will go better for him today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/favs.jpg

A lot of early attacks today, 10k in, there are 7 riders at the front of the race: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Hermans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Potocki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Bergstrom Frisk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Wibisono, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Hoole, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Cepeda Hernandez, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Debusschere. 17 seconds behind is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Januskevicius with another 4 riders, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Scheit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Siriwardena, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Nsengimana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Beltran at 32 seconds. The peloton still chasing at 56 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/01.jpg

5k to the first KOM point for the leaders, a Cat 4. All 12 riders mentioned above are together. 5 more have attacked from the peloton: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Restrepo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Visser, the 4th LPH rider to be on the move, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Lopez Nolasco and also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Tediashvili. But the peloton seems unsure about letting these additional 5 go and has cut their lead to 32 seconds. Volcanica, Zwift and EA are the teams doing the chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/02.jpg

Hermans takes maximum points at the top bringing his total to 13. KOM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Zakarin has 31 points but is not in the break today. Of those in the break only Hermans had any points from yesterday. All 17 escapees were briefly together on the climb but then it broke up as some riders went for the KOM points. Peloton is 1’19 behind the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Cepeda Hernandez (3) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Potocki (1), and take 2nd and 3rd at the KOM.

All four LPH riders managed to get themselves distanced and they are just rejoining the rest as the break starts the 2nd climb of the day. A 4.9k Cat 2 at 6.3%. The break has 138k to go and the peloton is 3’07 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/04.jpg

Scheit attacks early and stays away long enough to take maximum points on the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/05.jpg

The rest of the points go to:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Hermans 8 (21)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Cepeda Hernandez 6 (7)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Swift 4
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Restrepo 2

The breakaway split up on the climb again but came back together on the descent. At the sprint point with 98k to go only Hermans, Nsengimana and Swift show any interest. Soon the break will tackle the next climb which is another Cat 2, 7.5k at 5.3%. Peloton is at 2’35 with Zwift, Volcanica and EA working, looks like the punchy sprinters fancy a go today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/06.jpg

Scheit again goes long and again it works for him. He takes 10 more points bringing him to 20. Hermans takes second, he is on 29 points, he needs just 3 more for the virtual lead. The rest of the points go to Nsengimana (6), Lopez Nolasco (4) and Visser (2)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/07.jpg

By the time the peloton reaches the top of the same climb their deficit is back to 3’37.

At the next climb Hermans betters Scheit to take 6 points and the virtual KOM jersey. He is on 35 points with Scheit on 24. The Cat 1 climb starts very soon, it is rated that high more for its steepness (9.5%) than its length (5k).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/08.jpg

60k to go and 3k to the top of the Cat 1 for the break. Hermans has been dropped as he pays for his KOM efforts. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Tediashvili also in trouble. The peloton is at 3’10, nobody has been dropped although there were some splits over the top of the last climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/09.jpg

The Los Pollos riders drive the pace on the climb and with 800 meters to go the group is reduced to Lopez Nolasco, Hoole, Siriwardena, Cepeda Hernandez, Restrepo, Scheit and Swift.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/10.jpg

By the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Cepeda Hernandez is on his own. The 16 points bring him to 25. The gap to the peloton has grown to almost 4 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/11.jpg

Scheit takes 6th place and 4 points on the climb to bring him to 28 points. With only a Cat 4 left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Hermans will wear the KOM jersey tomorrow. The break has split into multiple pieces. From here mostly downhill or flat to the finish so there will be time for some regrouping.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/vlf.png Herrada leads the peloton over the top 4’35 down. 57k to ride. At the front of the race Cepeda Hernandez has a 40 second lead over a 5 rider group including Lopez Nolasco, Hoole, Siriwardena, Restrepo and Scheit

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/12.jpg

50k to go for the peloton, the lead already down to 3’17. The front 6 are together and Swift and Beltran are just 33 seconds behind them. Other riders from the breakaway are still chasing and could rejoin the front group. The peloton split over the top of the climb and the first chase group is down to 68 riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Sosa is the only top 20 GC rider missing from the front chase group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/13.jpg

32k for the leaders. The final climb, a Cat 4 summits in 5k. Hoole has been dropped from this group and nobody else has been able to rejoin. So the surviving 5 are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Cepeda Hernandez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Scheit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Siriwardena, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Restrepo, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Lopez Nolasco. The peloton is at 3’17 and is back to 147 riders. Volcanica, EA and Zwift had been doing the chasing but they appear to have run out of domestiques so the gap hasn’t been closing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/14.jpg

Cepeda Hernandez holds off Scheit at the Cat 4. They are on 30 and 31 points respectively, just behind Hermans (35). With yesterday’s big scorer pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Zakarin also on 31 points, that competition is very tight.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/15.jpg

Restrepo has been dropped and the peloton is at 4’11. With 28k of mostly downhill to go it looks like one of the 4 remaining escapees will win the stage. Cepeda Hernandez started the day 4’45 down on GC so a vague threat from him in the overall.

20k banner for the peloton. The gap went to over 5 minutes but with Gjensidige, Moser, Xero, MOL and Strava all helping now it is down to 4’58, not clear why they are aiding Evonik to protect the GC since the stage win is not in play at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/16.jpg

13k to ride and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Siriwardena launches the first attack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Lopez Nolasco is the only one who struggles to follow. Peloton at 4’44. None of these 4 is a great sprinter, Scheit and Cepeda Hernandez are a little better than the other 2.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/17.jpg

Under the 10k banner Cepeda Hernandez has a dig, Scheit just behind. Siriwardena looks to Lopez Nolasco to close the gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/18.jpg

It takes some time but the back two do come back and with 6.7k to go the front four are back together. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Restrepo is the next man on the road at 1’53, so it is between these 4. The peloton, at 4’35, isn’t chasing hard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/19.jpg

1.5k and Cepeda Hernandez decides to go long.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/20.jpg

700 meters and he has a gap on the other 3.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/21.jpg

400 meters, his gap is growing, it looks like a stage win for ISA-Hexacta.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Cepeda Hernandez celebrates a victory in Stage 2 of the Balkans International. The peloton has closed to 4'07 so he won’t be taking the GC lead but will move up a lot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Scheit takes 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Siriwardena and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Lopez Nolasco.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Restrepo holds off the group with the remaining breakaway survivors for 5th, 2’21 behind the winner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/25.jpg

The rest of the top 10 come from that group it is: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Visser then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Nsengimana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Potocki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Wibisono. The other three survivors from the original breakaway are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Hoole, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Beltran and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Bergstrom Frisk. They all finish 2’33 down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke leads home the pack to take 14th, 3’38 down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Balkans/S2/27.jpg

No change in the GC or young rider competitions. Cepeda Hernandez is tied with Lopez for the points lead. Kraftwerk take over the team lead.
