East Midlands Cicle Classic

Race Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/profile.jpg

East Midlands Cicle Classic. It's a harder race than it looks. 200 km, lots of cobbles and decent amount of climbing all together. Add in some traditional British weather with a strong wind blowing and riders are in for a hard day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0001.jpg

We'll start the action on the first cobbled section. A quick recap first. A group of 9 riders went away, but they were only dangling ahead of the peloton. More riders attempted to make it across before the cobbles.
Currently we have a front group with the below riders, but the gap to the peloton is still very small.

The riders are done with the first few cobbled sections and guess what? No more breakaway, they didn't stand a chance and the peloton is now already down to 50 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0003.jpg

Same circuit of cobbles for the 2nd time now. Getting ahead of the pack are these riders:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Salzmann
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Menten
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Kosic
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Karatzios
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Kulppi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Meiler

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van den Berg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Bolivar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Grand join the front group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0005.jpg

Lots of riders are still jumping from the peloton and with so many teams represented ahead it's not quite certain who in the peloton is controlling the situation.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0006.jpg

Some changes to the front group again as the riders hit the tarmac road. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Kortsidakis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Chokri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Potts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Boros and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Ringheim are new here.
Dropping back were pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Kosic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Kulppi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Grand.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Aker and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff are the main two teams working in the peloton. 85 km left, this is the 3rd circuit of cobbles. The breakaway is just a minute ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Anderberg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Tiller are two of the bigger names that lose contact with the peloton with 73 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0009.jpg

Another circuit completed, another iteration of the breakaway caught and now the main group is down to only 27 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Senechal is dropped with 44 km to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0011.jpg

The pace slows down and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Senechal makes it back and goes straight to the front, he might be working for his teammate today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0012.jpg

We have been waiting for the big attack and it comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Altur and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Theuns with 28 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Ferreira is the only helper left and it seems he's running on fumes by now also.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz knows now is the time to go as he attacks just before the cobbled section.
Note: There are plenty of lapped riders in the photos.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0015.jpg

The trio only have a tiny gap with 20 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0016.jpg

In pursuit about 30'' back are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Pedersen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Wisniowski
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Per
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Summerhill
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Van Hooydonck
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Debesay
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Teunissen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0017.jpg

The trio are working well together, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Pedersen shows some impressive power as he's able to move up to them with a solo effort. Last cobbled section!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0018.jpg

6 km left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Wisniowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Summerhill and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Van Hooydonck manage to bridgs across on the flat.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0019.jpg

It was inevitable that it came down to a sprint finish. Whether it's strength left after a hard race or simply dumb luck positioning after a late 90 degree corner, the worst sprinter in the group  pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz comes out on top to win the sprint!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Pedersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Theuns the two best sprinters complete the podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Midlands/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Spengler finished the best of the 2nd group in 8th place ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev. Disappointing day for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Per and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Zepuntke who round that group in 12th and 13th.
