Stage 21
The streets of Paris are lined with cycling fans today, celebrating the riders and cheering them on.
We’ve made it! After a long 20 days and an also very long transfer flight from Luz Ardiden to Chantilly, a small town north of Paris, the remaining 181 riders make their way to the Champs Elysées today. It’s not a long ride, just a few dozen kilometers into the city and then five rounds on the iconic circuit between the Arc de Triomphe and the Place de la Concorde. Time for most riders to either celebrate their achievements or lick their wounds, but for some, this is one of or maybe even the most important stage of the race.
First and foremost, the points classification hasn’t been decided just yet. Herklotz is the leader and the main favorite, but Dainese can still take the green jersey with a stage win, while Manninen needs a stage win and additionally a first or second place at the intermediate sprint. Both possible scenarios, but longshots nonetheless.
For other sprinters, this is simply the opportunity to either crown an already good race, or to switch the narrative and make an otherwise mediocre or even disappointing race look much better. And then, there’s of course also the outside chance of a breakaway surprising everyone.
The four leader jerseys line up together for one last time. For Beltran, it’s also the first time.
The first attack of the day comes from Konrad and Powless.
And that’s it. The two quickly build a lead and enter the streets of Paris with 1’30 on the peloton.
At the intermediate sprint on the first lap of the Champs Elysées circuit, that’s up to 2’30. With this, Manninen no longer has a chance to win the points classification.
Fully focused on the stage win now, none of the sprinters go for the remaining points. Los Pollos Hermanos and Aker – MOT lead the way.
With one and a half laps remaining, the gap is down to 1’20.
Half a lap to go and Powless leaves Konrad behind. De Stijl have taken the lead in the peloton. Kemboi has had a horrendous race so far, maybe he’s looking for redemption today.
They catch Powless just a couple kilometers later. Kemboi is already close to the front, as are Rojus, Harrison, Dainese and Bouglas. Manninen, Van Poppel and Hsu are a bit further behind.
The former two have come closer as they ride through the underpass for the final time.
Onto the finishing straight, Roosen leads Van Poppel and Bettiol leads Kemboi. Manninen got stuck in traffic a bit, Ruiz tries to shepherd him to the front.
He does so excellently, but also very early. Still 1.5 kilometers to go.
Kemboi takes over with 1 kilometer to go. Rojus is in the wind to the right, behind him Van Poppel, Harrison and Ackermann. Dainese is also in the mix ahead of Zariff and Bouglas.
Kemboi remains in the lead, 600 meters to go now. Pidcock is also trying his hand at sprinting here.
Manninen moves past Kemboi, and Dainese now attacks to their left. He’s the fastest right now, this is his push to win the points classification!
Dainese sprints past everyone and takes a big lead!
And he does it! Alberto Dainese wins on the Champs Elysées and wins the green jersey! What an absolute revelation this young man has been in this race.
Manninen finishes second. A good result to add to his two stage wins, even if he ultimately falls short of green. Behind him, it’s really close.
Barely visible to the naked eye, Van Poppel takes third place ahead of Rojus. Ackermann is fifth, Kemboi sixth, which, incredibly, is his best result of the race.
Thijssen is seventh, then Larsen and Bouglas. Peak beats Pidcock by a few centimeters to take 10th, stage 2 winner Harrison comes in 12th.
Zariff arrives in 13th place ahead of Hayter and Zakarin. Herklotz tried his best to take a few points but it’s only enough for 18th.
The peloton finishes as one, Lehtinen is the final rider to cross the line as we bid farewell to this year’s Tour de France.
And with that, three intense weeks of racing come to an end. It was never really close at the top of the GC, but behind Herklotz, who joins Simon Spilak, Andy Schleck and Angel Madrazo as two-time winners of the Tour de France, there were some very tense battles that were decided by as little as 2 seconds.
While the young rider classification was also never a true contest, and the teams classification was up in the air until late but ultimately a fairly sure thing for Moser - Sygic, the other two classifications came down to the wire. Both Dainese and Beltran snatched the jerseys away from their previous owner on the last possible day.
The sprints were primarily dominated by three riders: Dainese, Hsu and Manninen all won two stages, only Ackermann and Harrison managed to break their supremacy.
The non-sprint stages were characterized by a lack of breakaway success. It was therefore the fast and aggressive GC contenders who were able to ride their way to glory: Yates and Latour both won two stages, Herklotz even three.
With all of that in the rearview mirror, there’s only one thing left to do: Let’s head to the podium and celebrate our winners.
