An inside look of the Cathédrale de Mirepoix.

There are only 28.1 individual time trialing kilometers in this year’s Tour de France. 4.7 of them came in the opening prologue, the remaining 23.4 are on the menue today in Mirepoix. Riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Eastman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov will try to gain some time on their rivals ahead of the three upcoming stages in the Pyrenees, while the armada of time trialing specialists enlisted mostly for the team time trial battle for the stage win - though this late in a tough race, perhaps the GC contenders might have the upper hand there, after all.

Here’s a reminder of the best time trialists on the startlist, including the best time trialists among the strong climbers, and then we’ll get right into it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/02.jpg

Most time trialists are poor climbers and thus, many start the day very early. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Goldstein has held the Lanterne Rouge for a while now, having spent more than four and a half hours longer in the saddle than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz. He sets a good first time at the intermediate checkpoint, but that’s immediately bested by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Viennet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/03.jpg

There’s a steep ramp shortly before the time check where the road rises at almost 10%. It’s not great for the pure time trialists, but they have to conquer it. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Yatsevich has already almost caught pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Zariff and he beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Viennet by 19 seconds there, which exactly doubles to 38 seconds at the finish line. A strong performance by the Russian champion.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sütterlin overtakes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Kalf on his way to a provisional second best time at the finish, 7 seconds faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Viennet. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Noia had a decent ride, beating pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Goldstein.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Leung beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sütterlin by 5 seconds but he’s still far off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Yatsevich.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Haugard finishes just 2 seconds slower than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Leung and then surprisingly also 2 seconds slower than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Sergent, who jumps into provisional second place at the line. A good result on his old days.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Dal Col doesn’t crack the Top 5 but teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Vorobev actually sets a new best time, five seconds faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Yatsevich! Just like we had in the prologue at one point, it’s a Tinkoff 1-2 for now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Howson takes third place, 15 seconds behind the new leader. No one else of this batch comes particularly close, the best one is actually pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Turek, who comes through in 6th place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/10.jpg

The heavy hitters in the fight for the stage win continue to roll in. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Mullen sets a new best time by five seconds at the time check, but at the finish line, he’s 1 second slower than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Vorobev!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Zakarin then takes the best time at the time check by another 11 seconds! He, too, loses some time to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Vorobev in the second half, but still sets a best time by 9 seconds. That’s three Tinkoff riders in the Top 4 now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/12.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Lammertink breaks that up, he finishes one second faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Vorobev, provisional second place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Politt also has a good day, he’s sixth as he crosses the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/13.jpg

Another Russian with a great time, but this one doesn’t wear the Tinkoff jersey: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Razumov beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Lammertink and is the new rider in second place, 5 seconds off the lead. His teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Christian also does well, provisional 7th place for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/14.jpg

Rather surprisingly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Brunel actually managed to set the best time at the intermediate time check and then … he falls just one second short of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Zakarin! A huge ride by the young Frenchman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/16.jpg

Few big names for the stage win remain, but stage 1 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Oliveira is certainly one of them – and he’s not looking too bad for a second victory, indeed. He destroys pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Zakarin’s best time by 19 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/17.jpg

We’re also getting glimpses of what good climbing skills, or rather the energy they may have saved you until this point, can get you. Both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Sendeku enter the provisional Top 10, on par with guys like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Yatsevich or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Politt. And also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Cataford, who has an underwhelming day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/18.jpg

It has started to rain, which certainly won’t make the remaining riders happy. But it doesn’t seem to stop pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Fraile very much. He takes the lead at the time check by 7 seconds but loses 12 in the second half, still enough for second place. His teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh also does well, just missing out on the Top 10.

A few more secondary riders to get through before we take a look at the GC contenders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Goos has a really strong day, he finishes provisional third, 18 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Oliveira.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Powless can’t quite maximize his potential, he’s 10 seconds slower. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png McNulty and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio just barely make it into the Top 20, another 11 and 13 seconds slower, respectively. The rain has already stopped again, nothing to interfere as the best GC riders head onto the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/24.jpg

Both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Kritskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Geoghegan Hart trail pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Oliveira by 12 seconds at the finish line. The Brit is listed first of the two for now, he also overtakes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Foss (provisional 8th at + 25) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Karnulin and moves up to 14th in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Pogacar has some good legs today it seems. He was second at the time check and still is at the finish! He ties pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Fraile, a very strong performance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/27.jpg

No one will lose their Top 10 place today, the gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Chiarello in 11th is just too big. But there will be a few shifts among them: For instance, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Schelling pretty easily overtakes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Godoy to take 9th in the GC, he’s 15th at the finish line (+ 32), 59 seconds faster than the Brazilian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/28.jpg

Looking at what some of the other Top 20 riders did a few minutes ago, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Eastman should be a contender for the stage win. But he doesn’t quite get there. 6th place for him, 17 seconds off the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/29.jpg

He still overtakes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Wellens, who was just 2 seconds ahead of him in the GC prior to today. The Belgian is 29 seconds slower, but he does get closer to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates, who ends up at + 1’01 and also falls behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Eastman, who moves up to 6th overall.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/31.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio is the only realistic contender for the stage win left, and at the time check he beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Oliveira by 11 seconds (and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Latour by 49). But many have beaten the Portuguese at the time check and yet he still is in the hot seat. A lot can change on the second half.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/32.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Morton can’t match that, of course, but he limits his losses to 13 seconds for the time being. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov on the other hand is an active contender for the stage win, he’s just 2 seconds slower than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/33.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz rides at a steady pace. 11 seconds slower than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio at the time check, that’s very acceptable. Now he has to keep it up for the rest of the stage.

GC Ranks 5-1 – Finish
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/35.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Latour doesn’t have great legs today. He ends up just outside the Top 100, losing over a minute and a half. He remains in 5th place by just a few seconds, but the podium is much farther away now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/36.jpg

Time to crown the stage winner, part one: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio does not falter in the second half. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Oliveira was still a couple of seconds faster there, but in total, the MOL captain takes the lead by 9 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/37.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Morton does about as well as one could expect him to. He crosses the line in provisional 11th place, losing 32 seconds to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio. He drops behind him into 4th place overall, but is still well within striking range.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/38.jpg

Time to crown the stage winner, part two: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov was just 2 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio at the time check and now … that’s a gap of 5 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Justo Tenorio wins Stage 17 of the Tour de France, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov can be very proud of this second place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S17/39.jpg

Not a spectacular ride by any means today from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz, but it does the job. He finishes 10th, and by losing 24 seconds to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov and 29 to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio, his lead heading into the Pyrenees remains above the three minute mark. He also gains 3 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Morton.

Alright then. Every bit of time trialing is out of the way, no more hills either, now only three mountain stages remain to determine the final general classification. Only an extraordinary event can stop pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz at this point, but behind him, there are several very interesting battles. Only 41 seconds separate places 2, 3 and 4, and it’s just 31 seconds from fifth to eighth! Plus, the mountain classification has yet to be decided and, of course, some prestigious stage wins are on the table. Will we finally see a breakaway succeed? We’ll find out together starting tomorrow.
