Stage 15
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/P.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/01.jpg

The eponymous Château of Sévérac-le-Château, today’s destination.

We’re kicking off week three of Le Tour with the second of three transition stages that bring us towards Mirepoix, the location of the individual time trial, and then of course the Pyrenees. Back in the outskirts of the Massif Central, it’s a hilly stage but features the signature climb up the Col de la Lusette in the first third that’ll already separate the wheat from the chaff. There’s hardly any piece of flat roads afterwards, but a lot of downhills will give riders from the head of the race to the last man on the road some breathing room.

Usually, a stage like this should belong to the breakaway. Riders with a good punch who can win a sprint from a small group would be favored, and there is of course a decent amount of mountain points on offer as well. With a flat stage and the time trial up next, riders can really go all out today.

GC wise, it would be a surprise to see any major changes, as the stage likely isn’t hard enough to overwhelm domestiques and the finale doesn’t present any obvious opportunities for a big attack. But if a contender has a bad day, they could find themselves in a vulnerable spot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Knotten and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Smith are the first to attack. The Kiwi hasn’t given up on the polka dot jersey yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Figueiredo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Howson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Osorio are next.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/04.jpg

Then we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Godon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Rosskopf, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Dversnes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Vingegaard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Christian join them and we have a group of 12 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/06.jpg

At the intermediate sprint, they have 3 minutes on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Osorio wins the sprint on the Cap de Coste and takes 6 points, his first of the race, as are the 4 for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Smith increases his total to 22. The rider with most points in this group is actually pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Godon at 30, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns has 22 and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Vingegaard has 20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio has 62, he’s trying to catch up to the breakaway with a rather late attack. Let’s see if he makes it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/10.jpg

He does, in part because the pace in the breakaway is pretty slow. Riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Howson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Knotten are able to hang on all the way to the top of the Col de la Lusette, despite the 16.6 kilometers at 6.9%. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Smith attacks with 2 kilometers to the summit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio is in 5th position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Smith takes it in a very close sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio is 4th and adds 8 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/12.jpg

Several teams at the front of the peloton ride at a decent tempo, which in combination with the slow breakaway means that the lead has only increased to around 3’30. Not a big cushion yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/13.jpg

And it’s down to as little as 2 minutes by the time we reach the Mon Aigoual. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Osorio wins the sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Knotten has been distanced, he won’t make it back to the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/15.jpg

At the foot of the Côte de Meyrueis, the peloton can already see the breakaway again, which really isn’t putting up too much of a fight. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese’s green jersey might compel Aker – MOT to be a driving force in the peloton, while De Stijl could be trying to set up a second stage win by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Osorio wins his third KoM sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Smith adds another 4 points, none for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio this time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Howson is dropped from the breakaway on the way to the Côte de Sainte-Enimie. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Dversnes follows in the first slopes of the climb as the group increases the pace a bit, but it might be too late.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/18.jpg

The breakaway splits up further. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Rosskopf and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Christian are already back in the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Smith and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Osorio seem to be the strongest. The peloton is just 1’20 behind them. 41 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/19.jpg

Aker will have to find a different way to validate their earlier efforts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese is distanced from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/20.jpg

Ahead of him, there’s another split: 14th overall pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Roglic is caught on the wrong side, as are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Kritskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Pinot. Only 40 riders remain in the main group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/22.jpg

With the peloton coming closer and closer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Smith realizes he has to do something if he wants to win this stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Figueiredo, who had managed to bridge the gap to the four leaders, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Osorio are closest, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio seem to struggle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Godon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Vingegaard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos are caught by the yellow jersey group with 22 kilometers to go in the early parts of the final categorized climb on the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Amezawa leads the way at a pretty high pace. It’s notable that next to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann, who we expect to be here and who’s now a major favorite for another stage win, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen has also survived in this group so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio hasn’t given up yet. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Figueiredo can follow and they increase their lead again little by little on the now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Guerreiro-led group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio collects 6 final points, he ends today with 82, just 18 short of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Arensman. But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates has attacked and he reaches the group in no time. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Godoy counters with an attack of his own.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/27.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Sequera brings all of them back and we head into the final 12 kilometers with a group of 40. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen somehow just barely hung on, he and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann would be the favorites now if this group remains together and they can recover enough energy. Other fast men include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Madouas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Pidcock, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Paret-Peintre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Guerreiro, as well as of course pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz among the GC riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/28.jpg

But will it even come to a group sprint? On the final short hill, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates attacks again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Eastman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Wellens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Hirt react.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/29.jpg

This finally pushes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen off the back of the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/30.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates takes a 10 second lead into the downhill. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Beltran is chasing. A group of 6 including the previously mentioned pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Pidcock and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Guerreiro as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Warchol are distanced.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/31.jpg

2.3 kilometers left. They aren’t flat, with a few bumps here and there, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Latour uses one of those to attack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Godoy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov are with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/32.jpg

They catch up to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates and lead the rest by 20 seconds at the flamme rouge. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Madouas chases for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/33.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Godoy doesn’t seem to have the legs, the other three start to sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/34.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Adam Yates quickly pulls away. He was very active and takes a deserved second stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/35.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov is second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Latour third, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz comes flying.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/36.jpg

He takes 4th place, regaining control of the green jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Madouas is 5th, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Wellens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Morton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/37.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Foss finishes 8th, is this really what you’ve been doing all this work for? The breakaway guys won’t be happy with Aker today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Chamorro and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Schelling complete the Top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/38.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann did not have enough in the tank to compete for the win, he finishes at the tail end of the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S15/39.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Roglic loses 2’50 in the end, alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Kritskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Pinot. They drop to 18th, 19th and 20th, respectively, in the GC.

So, this really isn’t a race for breakaways, huh? Some teams continue to make rather strange decisions, but to be fair, the team that perhaps did the most work of them all in the peloton was successful, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates delivering once again for De Stijl. Another successful team: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Gazelle, who thanks to having three men in the front group take the lead in the teams classification by over 4 minutes.

Tomorrow, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen will have their chance to regain green after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz gained 19 points today. Then we’ll have the time trial before we head into the Pyrenees.
