Stage 14
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/P.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/01.jpg

The Pont Saint-Bénézet, better known as the Pont d’Avignon, where we dance, where we dance.

After four tough stages in the Massif Central and the Alps, the riders get a bit of a respite today - at least regarding the terrain. The road from Draguignan to Avignon, once home of several popes, has some bumps in it in the first two thirds, then levels out to an easy, flat stretch that should end in a bunch sprint. It is, however, also the longest stage of the race at 216 kilometers long, so it’ll still be a tough day in the saddle.

The sprinter teams are expected to control the race today as it’s the first of only three opportunities left during this Tour for the fastest men in the field. As such, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen will try his best to regain control of the points classification, trailing GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz by 11 points. Getting that back today should be the bare minimum, but he needs to extend his lead by as many points as possible before we return to the mountains.

While we don’t expect a breakaway victory today, the mountain points available today, 22 at most, might entice some of the riders competing for the polka-dots jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/1.jpg

Six riders attack early. They are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Rosskopf, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Konrad, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Postlberger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Sergent, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Knotten and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Razumov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/02.jpg

As we know, more than three riders in a breakaway is not to the peloton’s liking on a flat stage. Many sprinter teams combine to bring them back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/03.jpg

Then, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Godon goes, and … nobody follows. Not a single attack after that, so we’re going to spend today with one man up front. A long, lonely ride ahead for the French.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/04.jpg

We won’t show him crossing every single climb alone, instead focusing on what’s perhaps more relevant: The guys from the peloton fighting for the remaining mountain points. On the Col de la Bigue, that’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Foss and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Ardila.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Foss takes 4 points, taking his total to 52, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio pockets the remaining 2 for a total of 55.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/07.jpg

Between the two Cat 3 climbs, we suddenly have another attack from the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Godon is close to 2 minutes in front and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Abreu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Arissol and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Neilands want to bridge across. Los Pollos Hermanos and Huski Chocolate, who we’ve become used to seeing at the head of the peloton on flat stages, won’t have any of that though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/08.jpg

And so, we have the same riders competing for points on the Côte de Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Arensman is in the mix here, too, but is outmatched, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Foss is too late. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio takes another 4 points, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Ardila gets 2. He now has 45.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/09.jpg

Cows!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/10.jpg

For the third and fourth mountain sprint, it’s only 3 and 1 points for second and third place. On the Côte de Riez, those go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Foss and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Ardila …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/11.jpg

… and on the Col de Montfuron to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Ardila. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Arensman remains empty-handed today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/13.jpg

Nearing the intermediate sprint in Apt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Godon’s lead is at 2’30 thanks to continuous work by LPH and Huski. He’s not going to go far today, but it’s still an admirable effort.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/14.jpg

Up to 6 points are available for the sprinters in the peloton, a juicy proposition for many teams.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/15.jpg

They go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen, then 4, 2 and 1 to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Godon is caught with almost exactly 20 kilometers to go, following some 180km alone in the wind and having collected 22 mountain points. Now, the stage is set for the sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/17.jpg

With 4 kilometers to go, Huski have taken the lead for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel, who’s followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen leads a long line of sprinters including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Larsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Rojus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Moser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Thijssen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kemboi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Harrison and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu a bit to the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Ruiz comes to the front with 2 kilometers to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel is now in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen’s slipstream. There is some headwind on the finishing straight, which could complicate things.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen waits until around 800 meters to go to release. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift are closest to him, trying to overtake him on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas actually takes the lead with 500 meters to go, but it’s still wide open.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Rojus takes over, he is very fast as are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Thijssen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/22.jpg

It looks like it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Rojus or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/23.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Alberto Dainese takes it! He’s been so solid all race and now crowns it with a fantastic victory. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Rojus comes through with a big surprise to take second place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Harrison both overtake pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Thijssen late, then it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Peak in 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu in 7th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann in 8th place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S14/25.jpg

This was simply one of those days where going too early was extremely punishing. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel finishes 9th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas 10th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen only 11th.

Following this result, the points classification looks actually wild. Despite the poor finish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen moves past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz by a single point - but thanks to steady scoring before and now this win, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese takes the green jersey by another single point, meaning just two points separate the Top 3!

The sprinters have two flat stages left to collect more points compared to three mountain stages for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz, plus the hilly stage tomorrow and perhaps outside chances to score minor points in the time trial. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese will keep their fingers crossed that breakaways are more successful than they have been before.

The first opportunity for that is indeed tomorrow, which on paper looks perfect for attacks. We’ll see if it’s finally that time.
