The town and fort of Réallon

We’ve made it to the Alps! Three days of climbing are ahead of us, a very diverse trio of stages, starting with this one from Voiron southeast of yesterday’s finish in Lyon to the small town of Réallon in the Département Hautes-Alpes. It’s fairly tame for the most part, a lot of up and down with climbs of the second and third category, yes, but no big mountains - in fact, this is classified as a hilly stage by the organizers. And yet, of these three days, it might be the one that creates the biggest time gaps between GC contenders.

This is exclusively due to the final climb to Réallon. With an average of 6.9% over 11 kilometers and slopes of up to almost 11%, it’s rightfully categorized as first category and certainly has the chance to lead to significant time gaps. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov is in yellow for the fifth day in a row, but it’ll be a tall task to defend it against pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz. These are the current Top 5 in the GC:

1Pavel SivakovTinkoff - La Datcha Team39h51'12
2Silvio HerklotzTeam Puma - SAP+ 12
3Ryan EastmanDuolingo+ 54
4Lachlan MortoncycleYorkshire+ 1'09
5Patrick SchellingTeam UBS+ 1'40

Then there are just 15 seconds between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Schelling and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates in 11th place.

In the mountain classification, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Arensman leads by 47 points on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio. There are 52 points available at most, including the finish, so the Dutch will likely keep it at least one more day. But starting with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns yesterday, stronger and stronger riders begin to be involved in the breakaways, so it’ll be harder to score many more points.

Lastly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png ELCO - ABEA still leads the team classification somewhat comfortably, but they’ll likely need a strong breakaway presence to keep it over teams with more climbing prowess such as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png EA Vesuvio, who are currently in third place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Turek opens proceedings. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Jorgenson try to follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/03.jpg

They drag pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Haugard with them, then go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Wright and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Kron.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/04.jpg

Los Pollos finally send someone other than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Nareklishvili (all due respect) into a breakaway, namely pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Lopez Nolasco, followed by yesterday’s escapee pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Parra Bustamente.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Abreu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Seboka join them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Buitrago attack as well. The peloton remains calm.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/06.jpg

And that’s it. 12 riders form today’s breakaway. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Parra Bustamente are the best climbers next to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Seboka, though the man from Lesotho has a rather unique skillset, of course.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/08.jpg

The Côte du Crozet is only 4.5% on average, thanks to a rather easy start and finish. It earns its second category title due to its length of 12 kilometers and stretches of over 7%. Like yesterday, the peloton doesn’t seem eager to let the breakaway just have the stage: Multiple GC teams ride to keep them within around 3 minutes. Notably absent is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Puma, who don’t have too strong a team on hilly and mountainous terrain, so it’s probably a smart move to not overcommit at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns wants to build on yesterday’s efforts and attacks towards the mountain sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Kron follow closest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/10.jpg

Both move past him, leaving pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns with only 6 points. The peloton has slowed down a bit, allowing their lead to grow to 4 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/11.jpg

We’re really among some pretty high mountains now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns once again attacks near the summit of the Col de l’Holme. A small gap emerges behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Kron and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Jorgenson as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Seboka can’t keep up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/13.jpg

Again it’s only third place for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns. With now 24 points, he’s 8th in the mountain classification, the best rider of the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/15.jpg

On climbs, the breakaway manages to gain some time, but on flat stretches, it’s the opposite. Following this long flat stretch between mountain sprints, they’ve suffered accordingly and the lead is down to just under 2 minutes. De Stijl is the most prominent team at the head of the peloton, surely encouraged by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates’ win yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Wright and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Haugard are dropped on the Col Bayard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Jorgenson takes 6 points here, another 4 for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Kron, who’s up to 22 now, and 2 for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Turek is distanced but returns quickly on the following descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/18.jpg

At the intermediate sprint in Gap, the gap between peloton and breakaway stands at 2’30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/20.jpg

In the first slopes of the Col Lebraut, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Turek is immediately distanced again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Abreu is currently doing a most of the work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Seboka then takes over, which is the end of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Lopez Nolasco’s ambitions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/22.jpg

Rather surprisingly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns crumbles next. But under pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Seboka’s high pace, only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Abreu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Parra Bustamente can follow. They also increase their lead over the pack to 3’30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/23.jpg

Near the summit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Parra Bustamente attacks and creates a gap …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/24.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Seboka gets the upper hand again at the mountain sprint. He leaves the other two behind and the gap to the peloton shoots up to 4’40 very quickly. Let’s see how much they still have at the foot of the climb to Réallon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/26.jpg

Despite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Seboka’s really poor rouleur skills, it takes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Abreu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Parra Bustamente quite a long time to catch up to him. They are reunited heading into the climb though, with 44 seconds on a group of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Jorgenson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Kron, and a solid 4 minutes on the peloton. That could be enough to get the stage win, but we’ve seen before how quickly those gaps can be erased if the favorites go for it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Seboka knows he’s the strongest of the leaders and attacks right away – no use in pulling the others in his slipstream.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/28.jpg

Still, with a strong riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Kirsch at the helm, the peloton starts to gain time. Many of the GC contenders are near the front now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/29.jpg

This won’t be helping the breakaway, either: Who else could it be but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Latour, who attacks with 7 kilometers to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/30.jpg

But Puma have taken control now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Stork and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Madouas quickly bring him back, but how many more attacks will those two be able to counter? 1’30 and 5.8 kilometers for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Seboka up the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/31.jpg

We’ll find out soon enough! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates is next, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Warchol in his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/32.jpg

He catches up to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Abreu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Parra Bustamente. With him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Warchol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Godoy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Wellens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Roglic and the two Puma domestiques, but they’ve forgotten about their leader: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz leads the peloton in an effort to close this small gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/33.jpg

Which he does rather effortlessly, of course. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Seboka is caught with 4 kilometers to go, a good effort but ultimately fruitless. 53 riders remain in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/34.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Latour goes again!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/35.jpg

At the other end of the group, we have a surprising victim of this acceleration: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Preidler seems to be running on empty. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Amezawa is fighting to hold on as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/36.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/37.jpg

Back to the front where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Madouas neutralizes the attack, now with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz directly in tow. Can someone else make a decisive move or will this end in a sprint?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/38.jpg

Another shocker! 3rd overall pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Eastman is being dropped!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/39.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz himself has taken over now and even creates a small gap. At the back of the group, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Pogacar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Godoy struggle to keep up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/40.jpg

It’s a full on attack under the flamme rouge and no one seems to be able to counter! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov, fighting for his yellow jersey, lead the chase. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Godoy is off the back and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates is in trouble, too!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/41.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates is indeed being distanced! Ahead of him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Latour and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Karnulin, among others, have to dig deep. Many Top 10 contenders are suffering today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/42.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz is riding towards victory! With a second place and no time gap, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov could save the yellow jersey – the former seems possible, the latter less so.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/43.jpg

He drags himself over the line, no energy left to celebrate, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Silvio Herklotz shows his dominance and celebrates his 4th career Tour de France stage win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/44.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov does indeed finish second, an enormous performance, but he’s timed 17 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz, who therefore takes the overall lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio finishes third, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Pinot barely ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Hirt.

They get the same time as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Geoghegan Hart, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Schelling, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Wellens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Chiarello and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Powless. But then there’s a gap to the next group, and that includes a certain light blue jersey!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/45.jpg

And that belongs to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Morton, who completely collapsed in the final kilometer. He finishes 14th behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Foss and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Roglic, all coming in 52 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz, as are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Warchol and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Karnulin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/46.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Latour takes an even bigger hit, he’s timed with a deficit of 1’25 alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Pogacar, paying for his aggressiveness. The group around pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates comes in at + 1’45, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Godoy loses an additional 13 seconds to that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/47.jpg

The biggest loser among the podium contenders today is of course pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Eastman. He suffers badly and finishes almost three minutes behind the winner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S11/48.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Goldstein, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Schädlich and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Dillier continue to establish themselves as the worst climbers of the race. The Swiss remains in last place, but while they did finish comfortably within the time limit today, they might struggle more over the next two days.

The stage gave us some tough battles and time gaps among the contenders, perhaps even more than expected. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz gets yellow, now 13 seconds ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov, but then there’s already a significant gap. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Schelling, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Wellens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Morton are all between 2’03 and 2’09 behind the German.

Between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Karnulin in 7th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Kritskiy in 14th are also only 1’24. They can hypothetically all still harbour podium ambitions. For guys like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Roglic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Godoy, that gets further and further away, but perhaps it frees them up for big breakaway escapades later on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz also moves up to third in the points classification, now just 30 points behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen, who might be slightly annoyed at the lack of breakaway success yesterday and today. That might change tomorrow though, without a traditional mountain top finish.
