Stage 1 Report

Stage of 1 of the Tour of Lithuania takes the riders along a 177k course made up of 5 and ¾ laps around Kaunas. 3 nasty little official climbs along with some other bumps on each lap so while the stage should end up in a sprint don’t be surprised if some splits occur. Six Cat 4 KOMs and 3 sprint points so lots of stuff for the breakaway to do.

The stage favorites are the three strongest sprinters:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/favs.jpg

Kaunas castle can be seen in the background as the first attack comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Suter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Debusschere, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Campbell.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/01.jpg

Those three are ahead by 1’22 as they tackle the first of the three climbs for the first time. The peloton has shut down all additional attackers so far. The climb is up Silainiu Street, 1.5k at 3.8% and is the first KOM point. Strangely the KOM is placed well beyond the end of the climb so in reality it is the short steep climb in the image and then an 800-meter flat bit before the points are awarded.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/02.jpg

Campbell is the first up the climbing section and then holds off the other 2 to take maximum points. Debusschere 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/03.jpg

Attacks continue in the peloton, one of the attackers is one of the Lithuanians, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Januskevicius (a rider who learned how to animate a race at McCormick). Visible behind is a stretched-out peloton, the final lap could see this phenomenon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/04.jpg

By the time they reach the 2nd climb, Milikoniai Hill (700 meters, 5.8%), all the attacks have resulted in the original three being closed down. This climb has no KOM points but is where the race finishes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/05.jpg

As the start the third climb, up to Christ’s Resurrection Basilica, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Bernas is the lone leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Campbell and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Januskevicius at 13 seconds, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Gaspar another 13 seconds behind and then the peloton 20 seconds behind him. This climb carries Cat 4 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/06.jpg

Bernas (5) takes the points at the top , Campbell (3+5=8) edges Januskevicius (1) for 2nd. Peloton still not far behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/07.jpg

145k to go. The pack catch Gaspar and relent. The front 3 have 1’58 as they have now completed the first lap. No KOM points on the 2nd or 3rd lap so the action will come at the sprint points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/08.jpg

Bernas – Januskevicius – Campbell is the order at the first sprint point. Their lead is 3’12, which is about as large as it has been. 124k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/09.jpg

At the 2nd sprint point it is Bernas again, this time Campbell gets 2nd. The lead got up to 3’48 but is now down to 3 minutes with 85k to ride. Aegon, ISA-Hexacta and Kraftwerk are the teams working.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/10.jpg

The 4th climb of Silainiu Street carries Cat 4 points. Januskevicius is first up the climb but unfortunately for him there is that long flat bit and Bernas (5+5=10) is a much better sprinter and takes first ahead of Campbell (3+8=11). Januskevicius on 2 points. It would be nice if they would like the local guy win one of these, although he is young rider eligible so if he can hang on with the front group at the end, he might get a jersey. Their lead right now is 3 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/11.jpg

At the Basilica Bernas adds 5 more points (5+10=15), he has the virtual KOM as Campbell is only third on this climb (1+11=12). The local take 3 points bringing his score to 5.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/12.jpg

The final sprint is also on this lap. Campbell wins it ahead of Bernas. Peloton let the lead get up to 3’50 again now it is back to 3’10. 51k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/13.jpg

41k to go, the lead down to 2’01. The peloton is on the Silainiu Street for the 5th time, no KOM points here. There will be points at the Basilica on this lap and at Silainiu Street the next time round, during the partial lap to the finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Vansevenant on the front for Aegon, ISA-Hexacta and Kraftwerk also working. The next section is the bumpy part of the route where the peloton has been splitting which has slowed the chase down before. The rain can’t be helping either.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/14.jpg

Before they get to the KOM sprint pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Januskevicius decides he needs to try and go it alone. 33k to go, the peloton has the lead down to 1’21 and no splits at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/15.jpg

The attack doesn’t work, about 2k later the front three are back together.

Bernas drops the other two on the climb of up to the Basilica and takes maximum points. He will wear the KOM jersey tomorrow. Januskevicius prayers of some glory in his home race will only be answered if he can hang on to the front group at the finish and none of the top three on the stage are young rider eligible. Peloton is 1’12 behind Bernas with 25k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/16.jpg

17k to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png De Bie driving on the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Januskevicius is caught. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Campbell pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Bernas just ahead. Pacing from Aegon have created a split with 57 riders up front. Los Pollos trying to close a gap of 1’03 as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Kelderman is one of those who has missed the split. Other notable riders missing are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Prevar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Eiking and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png De Plus.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/17.jpg

15k to go, the break is over. On the front are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Dlamini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Helme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Barbin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Vansevenant and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Denz. Peloton back to 90 riders with Kelderman and De Plus able to rejoin. The other two are in a group at 2’03. Still have one Cat 4 KOM to go which could split things up again. Lead out men pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Santos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Einhorn also behind the split but this was never going to be a traditional sprint finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/18.jpg

Barbin leads the peloton up the final ascent of Silainiu Street, the others have not been able to rejoin. 10k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/19.jpg

2.7k to ride. Kraftwerk in control at the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Helme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Vernon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Chaiyasombat. But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Zabel isn’t in position behind them instead he is about 15 riders back on the right hand rail. A mix of sprinters and puncheurs left up front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png De Bie is the Aegon rider behind the Kraftwerk trio with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen against the rail on the right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lopez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Bobridge are just behind De Bie, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Kwiatkowski is the Mol rider on the left. Behind Groenwegen are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ewan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Houle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Hayakawa. Bib 51 in the bottom left corner of the image is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/20.jpg

1.3k to go. Zabel has found Vernon’s wheel at the front. The hill starts soon. Next are Enger, Ewan and Houle, then Bobridge and Groenewegen. Hayakawa is on the Groenwegen’s wheel with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/vlf.png Kump and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Afewerki behind him. Van der Lijke has found a good position behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Mano, De Bie next to him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/21.jpg

800 meters. Enger, Zabel and Ewan start the sprints. Groenwegen and Houle in the next row. We will see if they can last up the hill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/22.jpg

400 meters, still those 3. Van der Lijke has a nice inside line but has ground to make. Bobridge also sprinting but he has more to do as he is on the far outside. It gets steep from here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/23.jpg

100 meters. Ewan has the lead and the inside line. Houle and Van der Lijke are moving fastest but may have left it too late. The latter getting partially blocked by Groenwegen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ewan wins it, he shows he isn’t a bad climber. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Zabel 2nd, Kraftwerk were the most organized at the end. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Enger holds on for 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen 4th, he gets away with a questionable line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Houle 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Bobridge is the first of the GC guys in 7th. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/vlf.png Kump, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Hayakawa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lopez.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Lithuania/S1/27.jpg

Ewan also gets the points jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Januskevicius does not hold on to the front group so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Mano will wear the White Jersey. King Power also the best team. 77 riders get the same time as the winner, Eiking and Prevar both come in a group at 2’09 down.
