Stage 9

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/01.jpg

Le Château de Coubertin in Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse, home of Pierre de Coubertin, “father” of the modern Olympic Games

Two more stages bring the peloton from the North of France all the way towards the Alps. This first one, the last sprint stage for five days, starts in Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse on the southern outskirts of Paris, though the race organizers were careful not to visit the city limits until the final day, as is tradition. We travel for 195 kilometers to Contres, a small town of just over 3500 inhabitants in the Département Loir-et-Cher.

The stage is unique in that it comes with two intermediate sprints, though that won’t be terribly appealing to the breakaway riders. The only mountain sprint, one of the third category, comes very early in the race, so anyone targetting that better be quick. In contrast to the last two days, the run-up to the finish is entirely flat, so there’s nothing that could mess up the timing in the sprint preparation and not possible opportunity for the puncheurs - just a regular old mass sprint. Unless a rouleur can pull off a big upset?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/02.jpg

Some of the usual suspects are in today’s first breakaway attempt. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Vanthourenhout initiates it, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Arensman is looking for those sweet 6 mountain points, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Neilands actually makes his first appearance here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Jorgenson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Ardila, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Rosskopf and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Domagalski all try to follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/04.jpg

At the mountain sprint, it’s only 2 points for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Arensman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/05.jpg

In what is probably a smart move, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Arensman drops back into the peloton. Instead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Jorgenson joins the other two while the other attackers were caught and once again, wouldn’t you know it, we have a three men breakaway on a flat stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Vanthourenhout “wins” the intermediate sprint, while in the peloton, sprinters get set up to compete for the remaining 2 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/07.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen takes it with ease, one additional point going to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese. Nothing of note happened until the second intermediate sprint, so we can safely skip ahead until then.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/08.jpg

At the second intermediate sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Vanthourenhout takes maximum points again while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sütterlin sets pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen up nicely in the peloton …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/09.jpg

… and it’s another easy one for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu takes one point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/10.jpg

The breakaway riders are solid rouleurs and hold out a bit longer today, but the catch is still made with 11 kilometers to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Huski Chocolate is out in full force.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/11.jpg

Five kilometers to go and the first few rows are still filled with LPH and Huski domestiques. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift are closest to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kemboi follows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit at the bottom of the screen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/12.jpg

Huski don’t quite get their leadout right, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Kalf follows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel at the moment. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann are with them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Moser and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese follow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Kalf finally finds his way to the front and draws level with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Ruiz with 1.4 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kemboi continues to mess up his positioning, he’s pretty far back when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel hit the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen takes the lead with 600m to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu is his primary opponent, it seems. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel is already losing places.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen went too early, he’s passed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu on the left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann on the right!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann moves into the lead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Thijssen in his slipstream!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/18.jpg

And the German does it! One of the more surprising wins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Pascal Ackermann takes stage 9 after falling short yesterday on a stage that, on paper, suited him much better! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Thijssen completes an unusual 1-2, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu finishes third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Moser and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen to finish fourth. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Zariff is 7th, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Harrison, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Rojus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift often has decent positioning, but he simply doesn’t seem to have the strength necessary anymore. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel imploded completely, he’s 13th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Larsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Peak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kemboi.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S9/21.jpg

The peloton splits in the last kilometers, a bunch of riders get a deficit of 2’30, but nothing GC changing, at least at the top. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Young uses the opportunity to lose additional time on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Schädlich and extend his deficit for the lanterne rouge.

Other than that, the main classification in focus today is of course the points classification. With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel struggling, it’s now actually pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann who’s in second place, 20 points behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen, whose consistency at the intermediate sprints adds an extra cushion. He enters the next four hilly and mountaineous days with a lead of 72 points over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz, and those four days will give a good indication if the German can actually enter the race for green or if the sprinters will ultimately fight for that among themselves.

Tomorrow is a hilly transition stage before we enter the Alps. Lots of possible outcomes for that one, tune in to find out what’s going to happen!
