Is the u23/Scouting system Worth the budget?
stealingsilver
I'm currently playing as a custom team and paying a lot of money on scouts.

The main issue I have is that you only sign the drafted rider for a season into your u23 team. It seems like a massive expense in scouting costs to be able to draft a rider for just a season in your u23s.

Am I doing anything wrong or is this just the case?

Yeah you're doing something wrong, second-year juniors can be signed to your main team starting August 1st just like any other rider without a contract for the upcoming season.

Reasons to draft a rider into a U23 team instead of signing him straight to the full-time roster are:

- lack of roster space on main team
- he's not quite good enough, but you don't want the rider to become unavailable for the main team next transfer season by having them sign a contract longer than one year elsewhere
- he's not quite good enough, but you don't want the rider to get deleted by the game if he remains unsigned
- he's not quite good enough, but you still want to have some control over his development by being able to select his training focus

(you can substitute "he's not quite good enough" with "you haven't managed to scout his full potential/stat limits, but some aspect of him looks promising")

Honestly though, unless you're truly out of roster spots or really tight on either budget or negotiation points, there's no valid reason to have a U23 team beyond roleplaying purposes.
You always risk the good ones getting snatched by another team before October 24th anyway.

If you want to game the system however, there's a slight potential reshuffling going on every season on January 6th, and that includes your main team AND U23 team riders. So hoarding many mediocre talents means there's a bigger chance for that reshuffle to turn one into a future star.

I can't disagree with any of above, but I enjoy the process, and it keeps guys in my sight, instead of losing sight of them as they get buried on my short list.

I have never not been able to sign a guy from my U23 team that I wanted to sign when the transfer window opens, and it isn't like NFL where other teams can poach them off your team during the season. If they are available on Draft day, you will be able to sign them if you so choose when the next transfer season opens.

I wish you could effect them more, like hire a trainer for the team etc. Maybe they will add that in the future.

Are you sure? The game doesn't generate junior races so why would it generate junior riders? Can you tell me if you have a career in 2023 then what the birthyear of the youngest rider in the game is?

More precisely: you can make contract offers to any junior who has been scouted by you (i.e. he's on the list of scouted riders in the u23/scouting section of the game) and who turns 18 in the actual year. I can confirm this works even in the following seasons.

It just seems weird to me, but I don't know because I haven't got the game for years now. Maybe to get confusion out of the way what do you consider a junior?
Because junior are riders who are 17 or 18 years of age. I've only seen U23 tables, those are for ages 19-23. That means the year you turn 19 is the year you can start racing in the U23. That's why I asked about the birthyears in whatever season you are in; I'm asking because I'm building a historical DB to use in the game that'll be released next June. I have all riders who are riding pro and U23 but I didn't account for juniors.

Don't know why previous post went out as it did and added my comment to the quote but so here my question:

I should also add you can draft riders again the next draft if he still isn't ready and no team signed him during transfer window up until Oct 20.
The very first round is dedicated to allowing you to chose 3 riders currently on your U23 team to renew for the current team.

I just renewed a u23 rider for the third year in a row.

Once you have $ in the bank that you can't really spend, you really don't even notice the expense.

I have 1-3 riders come through my u23 program every year that I sign for my main squad. Although the past 2 seasons it seems all my scouts find me for the countries that I need for my sponsors are all Northern Classics Cobble guys, and I have not found a 6* junior in 3 years running.

Well, I take back what I said: if your u23 team just disappears after you do your first development draft, then it is most certainly not worth it.

I guess it is a crap shoot, because first career I didn't have a problem with it, but new career I did.
Maybe it is because I didn't start U23 team until 3rd season in the first one, and started it right in the beginning of the new career.

You need to be World Tour to be allowed to have a u23 team.
