Stage 8

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/01.jpg

The Laon Cathedral, an important piece of early Gothic architecture

We move further north today from Bar-le-Duc in Grand Est to Laon in Hauts-de-France. At first glance, this looks like any given flat stage with some hills on the way, but look closer and you see another short climb - right at the finish line. While this stage is still considered flat, that ramp is actually a classified climb of the fourth category, which means that it awards 5 mountain points on the one hand, but also just 30 sprint points, given it’s not a pure sprint finish.

Will we still see the sprinters compete in the former diocese of Laon, or will the puncheurs and even climbers interfere? There are 20 bonus seconds available at the finish line, the exact difference between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz and GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov … But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The stage has to start first!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/02.jpg

Oh hey, we know those guys! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Dversnes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Vanthourenhout attack straight away. The Polar guy is surprisingly enough not pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Malori but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Viennet, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Wright and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Haugard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/03.jpg

A bunch of teams who’d rather have one of their own in the breakaway, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png ELCO – ABEA and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Zwift, try to shut them down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/04.jpg

They do, but only partly: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Haugard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Wright remain ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/05.jpg

Those two are already 1’30 ahead when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Christian try to get away, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Abreu accelerating as well. But to no avail. We’ll go through today with only a duo up front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/06.jpg

It has started to rain as the leading duo arrives at the intermediate sprint in Châlons en Champagne. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Haugard “wins” the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/07.jpg

From the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen to take 4 points, the final one goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/08.jpg

In contrast to the intermediate sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Haugard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Wright still compete for the mountain sprint, eventhough neither had any points to his name so far. The Brit wins.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Ardila very narrowly beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Miltiadis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Pronskiy for the final KoM point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Wright wins the second mountain sprint, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/11.jpg

And the same three riders contest the final point from the peloton, only this time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Miltiadis has the upper hand. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Arensman comes to the front way too late.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/13.jpg

The two escapees are caught with 20 kilometers to go. They gave their sponsors some good air time but ultimately couldn’t put up much of a fight.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/14.jpg

We jump forward to 3 kilometers to go and riders are all over the place. Los Pollos Hermanos and Huski Chocolate pushed the pace incredibly hard over the past few kilometers and now run the leadouts for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel on the right and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen on the left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift follow the Fin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann is on the Huski train, with everyone scattered behind them. The finish should suit him perfectly.

Some of the top sprinters are pretty far back, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kemboi and former stage winners pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Harrison and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Morton is the most advanced GC contender – the steep roads should suit him, but of course he lacks in raw pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/15.jpg

Two trains emerge heading into the steep parts. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Harrison and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu made it, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kemboi again didn’t.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/16.jpg

We can see just how steep this is. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel is brought to the front by his teammates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen are closest. With the exception of Ackermann, none of the sprinters are strong puncheurs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann moves to the front with conviction. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese moves past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel, then there’s a small gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Osorio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Moser.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann is still well clear with 800 meters to go, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen is going strong behind him. Everyone else is just trying to catch up, with many of the Los Pollos and Huski domestiques still in the mix.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/19.jpg

Did pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann go too early? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese finds a second lung and goes past him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen still looks strong, too. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Moser is also pretty quick right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen takes the lead, could this be his second stage win? The steepest parts are done now. Further behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kemboi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Harrison attack the Top 5!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/21.jpg

300 meters for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen, this is looking good for him! Out of nowhere, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates is suddenly in the mix now, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/22.jpg

What a show of strength! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Matti Manninen wins his second stage in dominant fashion. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese shows some remarkable consistency, following yesterday’s third place up with a second here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann takes third, maybe missing a golden opportunity for a stage win, but still a good result. And what is that? A Puma jersey in the front row?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/24.jpg

Why yes, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz, of course. He thrives on finishes like this, but started way too far back to fight for the win. Still, fourth place gives him a good amount of points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Moser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S8/25.jpg

De Stijl puts three riders in the Top 9 as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kemboi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Guerreiro come in next. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Harrison takes the final Top 10 place ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Morton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Thijssen.

With this impressive victory, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen increases his lead in the points classification to 19 over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel - it could have been more, had this been a true flat stage, but I assume this is only a very minor drop of bitterness. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese is up to 4th place in that classification now, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz up to 8th, though maybe he’ll lament this as a missed opportunity for more.

Tomorrow will be the third consecutive flat stage, this time very much pancake flat. One more for the sprinters before we head to more challenging terrain for a few days.
