Stage 7
Le Château de Commercy
The peloton travels towards the center of France with a finish in Commercy. The Col du Haut Jacques early in the stage is one last parting gift from the Vosges, which are left behind after just one day. After that, it’s mostly flat and the sprinters are expected to go at it for the win, but there’s a bit of a twist: Inside the final 1.5 kilometers, the road rises to up to 3%. Not a lot, but an additional challenge nonetheless.
Manninen is in the spotlight today, wearing the green jersey, but as proven by Harrison, any one of the many good sprinters in the peloton is a reasonable candidate for a stage win. Hsu and Kemboi are among the top favorites who want to improve on their mediocre start. Let’s get into it.
Yesterday’s efforts weren’t enough, apparently: Arensman is on the move again, hunting for more mountain points. Malori is another name we’ve seen a couple of times in breakaways already.
As are Dal Col and Vanthourenhout. Not a lot of creativity among the teams …
They’re all caught again though. In the first slopes of the Col du Haut Jacques, Dversnes makes a move, followed by Pronskiy and again Arensman.
Three has been the magic number for breakaway size on previous flat stages and it’s the same here, that trio builds a 3 minute lead by the summit, where Dversnes attacks first.
Arensman doesn’t look quite as strong today, he collects only 2 points.
Fast forward to the intermediate sprint in Epinal and the group’s lead is around three and a half minutes. They don’t spend any energy here, but with 2 and 1 points left, we can expect some commotion in the peloton.
We indeed see actual leadouts for Van Poppel, Hsu, Bouglas and Dainese. Kemboi and Manninen are a bit further behind.
Van Poppel and Bouglas lead with 500m to go.
And those two win this one.
Huski Chocolate is also very active in leading the peloton today, doing most of the work alongside Los Pollos Hermanos. Notably, there’s no input from De Stijl.
Dversnes takes the Col de la Main Noire head on as well …
… and again Arensman can’t counter. Still, he adds 5 points in total today. Their gap to the peloton is down to 2’30.
Attacks among the breakaway begin with more than 30 kilometers to go already, as their lead drops below one minute.
As per usual, this extends their time in the spotlight a bit, but Dversnes, a lock for today’s most combative rider, is the last of them to be caught with still 15 kilometers to go.
Huski Chocolate and Los Pollos Hermanos set a very high pace to deny any potential late attacks, which leads to a split in the peloton. No super relevant riders are in this second group, though.
With 3km to go, Van Poppel and Manninen get their leadouts by Hofstede and Kalf, and Sütterlin and Ruiz, respectively.
While the Huski guys are alone, many sprinters follow the green jersey on the left, including Petit, Ackermann, Dainese, Zariff, Thijssen, Hsu, Moser and Swift. Kemboi is nowhere to be found, perhaps De Stijl knew he wasn’t feeling well.
Ruiz jumps to the front with a big acceleration. Petit is in Manninen’s slipstream, most others are now following Van Poppel.
Under the flame rouge, the incline rises a bit. A gap opened behind Manninen and Petit, which Ackermann tries to close. Van Poppel still follows Kalf, then Moser and Zariff are closest.
The riders are on the stretch with 3% now. Manninen is in the wind, Petit still nicely tucked in behind him. Hsu is the last rider who still has a chance at a good result, then there’s a gap to Swift and the rest.
Petit overtakes Manninen, but both pay the price for their efforts and are very slow compared to the guys on the right.
Ackermann is going backwards as Van Poppel takes the lead by a good bike length. Zariff is still going strong and so are Dainese and Hsu.
Hsu charges forwards, it looks like it’s between him, Van Poppel and Dainese!
Hsu takes the lead, Dainese tries to attack second place!
But no one can stop Hsuang Ping Hsu today! After a very quiet first two sprint stages, he takes this one in style. Van Poppel finishes second, Dainese third, a very good result for the young Italian.
Two more youngsters follow: Thijssen beats Zariff, the two are fourth and fifth. Ackermann takes sixth place, Moser is seventh.
Peak and Rojus come from far behind to still overtake Petit and Manninen. The green jersey finishes 11th, a horrendous result after an overconfident leadout. The uphill roads in the finale really messed with their timing.
Three of the big first week surprises, Bouglas, Harrison and Larsen, as well as Swift complete the Top 15, only then comes Kemboi. A truly miserable day for the two top sprinters.
As expected, none of the main classifications change hands today. However, Manninen is under pressure with Van Poppel now only 2 points behind him in the points classification. Tomorrow will be the first opportunity for the Dutch to wrestle the jersey away from him! Additionally, there were a couple of splits in the peloton and while there were no implications at the top of the GC, Young actually lost enough time to regain control of the lanterne rouge.
