Le Château de Commercy

The peloton travels towards the center of France with a finish in Commercy. The Col du Haut Jacques early in the stage is one last parting gift from the Vosges, which are left behind after just one day. After that, it’s mostly flat and the sprinters are expected to go at it for the win, but there’s a bit of a twist: Inside the final 1.5 kilometers, the road rises to up to 3%. Not a lot, but an additional challenge nonetheless.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen is in the spotlight today, wearing the green jersey, but as proven by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Harrison, any one of the many good sprinters in the peloton is a reasonable candidate for a stage win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kemboi are among the top favorites who want to improve on their mediocre start. Let’s get into it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/02.jpg

Yesterday’s efforts weren’t enough, apparently: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Arensman is on the move again, hunting for more mountain points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Malori is another name we’ve seen a couple of times in breakaways already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/03.jpg

As are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Dal Col and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Vanthourenhout. Not a lot of creativity among the teams …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/04.jpg

They’re all caught again though. In the first slopes of the Col du Haut Jacques, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Dversnes makes a move, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Pronskiy and again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Arensman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/05.jpg

Three has been the magic number for breakaway size on previous flat stages and it’s the same here, that trio builds a 3 minute lead by the summit, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Dversnes attacks first.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Arensman doesn’t look quite as strong today, he collects only 2 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/07.jpg

Fast forward to the intermediate sprint in Epinal and the group’s lead is around three and a half minutes. They don’t spend any energy here, but with 2 and 1 points left, we can expect some commotion in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/08.jpg

We indeed see actual leadouts for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kemboi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen are a bit further behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas lead with 500m to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/10.jpg

And those two win this one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Huski Chocolate is also very active in leading the peloton today, doing most of the work alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Los Pollos Hermanos. Notably, there’s no input from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png De Stijl.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Dversnes takes the Col de la Main Noire head on as well …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/14.jpg

… and again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Arensman can’t counter. Still, he adds 5 points in total today. Their gap to the peloton is down to 2’30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/15.jpg

Attacks among the breakaway begin with more than 30 kilometers to go already, as their lead drops below one minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/16.jpg

As per usual, this extends their time in the spotlight a bit, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Dversnes, a lock for today’s most combative rider, is the last of them to be caught with still 15 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Huski Chocolate and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Los Pollos Hermanos set a very high pace to deny any potential late attacks, which leads to a split in the peloton. No super relevant riders are in this second group, though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/18.jpg

With 3km to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen get their leadouts by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Hofstede and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Kalf, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sütterlin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Ruiz, respectively.

While the Huski guys are alone, many sprinters follow the green jersey on the left, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Zariff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Thijssen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Moser and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kemboi is nowhere to be found, perhaps De Stijl knew he wasn’t feeling well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Ruiz jumps to the front with a big acceleration. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit is in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen’s slipstream, most others are now following pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/20.jpg

Under the flame rouge, the incline rises a bit. A gap opened behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit, which pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann tries to close. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel still follows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Kalf, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Moser and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Zariff are closest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/21.jpg

The riders are on the stretch with 3% now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen is in the wind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit still nicely tucked in behind him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu is the last rider who still has a chance at a good result, then there’s a gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift and the rest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit overtakes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen, but both pay the price for their efforts and are very slow compared to the guys on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann is going backwards as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel takes the lead by a good bike length. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Zariff is still going strong and so are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu charges forwards, it looks like it’s between him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu takes the lead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese tries to attack second place!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/26.jpg

But no one can stop pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsuang Ping Hsu today! After a very quiet first two sprint stages, he takes this one in style. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel finishes second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese third, a very good result for the young Italian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/27.jpg

Two more youngsters follow: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Thijssen beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Zariff, the two are fourth and fifth. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann takes sixth place, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Moser is seventh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Tour/S7/28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Peak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Rojus come from far behind to still overtake pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen. The green jersey finishes 11th, a horrendous result after an overconfident leadout. The uphill roads in the finale really messed with their timing.

Three of the big first week surprises, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Harrison and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Larsen, as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift complete the Top 15, only then comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kemboi. A truly miserable day for the two top sprinters.

As expected, none of the main classifications change hands today. However, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen is under pressure with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel now only 2 points behind him in the points classification. Tomorrow will be the first opportunity for the Dutch to wrestle the jersey away from him! Additionally, there were a couple of splits in the peloton and while there were no implications at the top of the GC, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Young actually lost enough time to regain control of the lanterne rouge.
