Tour of Norway – Stage 5

It’s the final stage of the Tour of Norway and there’s 198km until we crown our winner. Today’s stage has a versatile parcours so the race will be determined by how hard teams want to force the pace. There are 5 intermediate sprints, all with bonus seconds, so the GC winner could be determined out on course, in addition to at the finish line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Dennis will be trying to hold off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Dunbar, while the fight for the rest of the top 10 is fierce.

The Stage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/03.jpg

The race is off!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Azman is the first to jump away from the pack and should be working to overtake pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tlt.png Waeytens in the KOM competition. Bridging to Azman is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Mugisha and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Boassen Hagen. A group of four is the next to leave the peloton and includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Lindau, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/oph.png Le Gac, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Gaspar, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Campenaerts. Quickly the peloton decides to allow that gap to open up and by the time the 7 leaders have joined forces, the gap is over 2’30”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/05.jpg

As they approach the first sprint, the difference between the peloton and the leaders is 4’30”, having inched over 5’00” at one point. No one decides to sprint and it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Campenaerts crossing ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Lindau and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/oph.png Le Gac. The gap starts to shrink in the kilometers after the sprint and stabilizes around 4’00”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/06.jpg

There are 7 or 8 teams all contributing at the front of the peloton with 125km to go, but notably absent are Minions-Subwoolfer. They must realize that the breakaway is no threat to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Dennis’ GC with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Lindau the best placed rider up front, 5’20” back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/07.jpg

With 100km to go, it’s the status quo. 2’45” between the 7 leaders and the breakaway, but the fighting is about to begin as we head to the first climb of the day. Both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/oph.png Le Gac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Azman sit just 4 points back of first place in the KOM and will not want to give up the 5 points on offer at either of today’s 4th cat climbs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Azman is the one to take the first KOM point of the day, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Mugisha barely edging pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/oph.png Le Gac for 2nd. Le Gac will still have a chance to take the classification on the final climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Boassen Hagen. and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Campenaerts allowed the other 5 to get ahead attacking on the climb, but easily reconnected on the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/09.jpg

At 72km to go, the next sprint point arrives and again there is no fight for those positions. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Boassen Hagen. takes the points officially over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Gaspar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Mugisha. The gap to the peloton is approximately 2’30”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/10.jpg

We’re on the final categorized climb now and are just 2.0km from the final points in the KOM competition, although we will attempt this climb twice more in the final circuits. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/oph.png Le Gac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Azman are clearly well positioned in the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Azman jumps early away early and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Mugisha couldn’t hold the wheel. While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/oph.png Le Gac is able to jump ahead of Mugisha, closing the distance is just not possible and the results are Azman, Le Gac and Mugisha on the final climb. The gap to the peloton is 2’16” and the breakaway is split to pieces. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Campenaerts struggles the most to follow those attacks and ends up almost a minute behind of the leading 6. He decides - or is forced - back to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/12.jpg

Another sprint and another time through where no one fights for the points. Its Tafjorrd Kraft benefiting, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Boassen Hagen., then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Lindau. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Azman takes 3rd. Behind in the peloton, it is clear the pace has risen, as riders begin to stretch out. Individual riders are being pushed out the back, but no one of GC significance

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/13.jpg
This accent of the mountain is much faster from the peloton who has limited the gap to 52” with 36km to go. They’ve also pushed the downhill with gaps forming between major groups. While they should come together again, it shows just how impactful that final accent will be in determining the order of the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/14.jpg

The groups do not come back together and there’s now just 87 men in the peloton. At first glance, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Christodoulosis the highest placed rider not to make this group. The breakaway is also in chaos, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Lindau has attacked and is now up front alone. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/oph.png Le Gac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Gaspar are together and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Boassen Hagen. is alone, too. Somewhere in these attacks, the rest of the breakaway has been caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Lindau takes the next sprint point without concern with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Gaspar ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/oph.png Le Gac in the group behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Boassen Hagen. has been taken in by the peloton whose deficit is on 43”. It is clear they have decided to fight for as many places as possible in the final 25 km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Lindau is still out in front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Gaspar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/oph.png Le Gac now separated from each other and Le Gac about to rejoin the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Borges makes a strong attack away from the peloton and creates a gap quickly gaining about 30 seconds. That spells the immediate catch of Lindau and Borges goes over the top alone.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/18.jpg

A group of 5 also gets away from the front of the peloton as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png McCarthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tlt.png Waeytens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Kung, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Tsatevich, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Houle are off the front by 30 seconds. They’ve still got 25 to go to catch the solo leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/19.jpg
The peloton is 61 strong as they attempt to catch the leaders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Borges still holds 21 seconds over the 5. Those 5 have 27’ over the main group.

[
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/21.jpg

The final kicker has seen the 2nd group on the road caught, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Borges is still out in front. He maintains a small 21’ lead, but the peloton is charging hard. They know there’s still 1 intermediate sprint 2km from the finish and there should be many riders wanting those bonus seconds, along with the seconds at the finish line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Kennett appears to still be in the group, too in the fight for the points jersey, while Kalabpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Kalabaa is dropped. 7.4km to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/22.jpg

It wasn’t a huge kicker, but the group is splitting even further, it has been a hard day! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Borges is being joined by 3 attackers - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Kung, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png McCarthy, while the peloton itself is just 30 strong. The top 20 placings will be changing tonight as even 10th place pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Andriafenomananiaina has been caught out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Kung is looking for as many places as he can get and hes off from the rest of the breakaway. It’s not much of a gap, but he looks to have the most energy of anyone.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/24.jpg

It’s just 1.7km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Kung has taken the sprint point. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Enger sprints from behind with just 8 seconds to Kung and closing quickly. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Borges takes 3rd. Behind, there seems to be no impetus to prepare for the finish line

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/25.jpg

There’s just 3 riders with a shot now, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Kung, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Borges. Enger looks to be laboring, but we’ll see who has the most energy left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Houle leads out the peloton sprint for the minor placings. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png McCarthy has been caught in the leadout.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Borges is coming hard! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Enger is tiring but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Kung is not giving up! It will be a battle all the way to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Kung and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Borges are neck and neck! Is there anything Borges can do to make up the final inches. No, there isn’t enough space! Kung with an attacking win! Borges a close 2nd! Kung celebrates from 50m out, but the cameras turn toward the race for 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Houle with a fantastic finish to close the gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Enger but it will come down to the photo. It’s Houle 3rd, Enger 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/30.jpg

Jensen takes 5th place ahead of yesterday’s winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Pogacar. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Brown, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Fernandes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Dennis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Cosnefroy take the top 10, meaning Dennis has defended his GC lead and should take the crown! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Dunbar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Borisavljevic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Uwizeyimana also finish with the lead group.

Behind the top 30, riders are coming in 4s and 5s as this has been a challenging stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/31.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Kung stands a top the podium after a fantastic final victory! A well earned victory!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Norway/s5a/32.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Dennis takes the GC win! Even without a major placing on any stage, Dennis shows his consistency and strength across this 5-day race.
