Tour of Norway – Stage 3


With the surprise gap created on stage 2, there will be a few less contenders fighting for the leader’s jersey after this stage 3 time trial. This 29.9km individual test against the clock should benefit the pure time trialists, as there are really no major slopes anywhere along the course.

Our top time trialist - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Durbridge starts the day 1’48’ back of the our leaders. However, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Paillot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Gonzalez Salas are only ‘20 seconds back and likely to challenge for the overall lead on the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Dunbar also sits only 20” behind on GC and will be trying to get a lead now to hold easily in the hills with his superior hill and mountain stats to the remaining time trial contenders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Kämna and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Dennis should both be looking for major success here too as the other top GC contenders with great time trials.

Our first rider out of the gate is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Kolar, who is the only rider to have lost time on both stages so far, but should now given him a chance to set the first best time of the day. The first major contender to start is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Dumoulin, leaving the start house 10th.

It continues to be a tough tour of Norway for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Kolar, who is passed in the final stretch bypcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/oph.png Jabuka, who started after him. Jakuba takes the first best time of the day before the lead continues to evolve over the first starters until Dumoulin drops a stunner of a time.

The first person to overtake Dumoulin at the first split is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Beniusis, one of the prerace favorites. Before Beniusis can finish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Kittel also slots in, just 2” behind Beniusis at the intermediate check.

At the finish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Beniusis has crushed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Dumoulin over the second half, taking a huge lead. That lead is cut to 3” once pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Kittel crosses the line, but Beniusis manages to hold onto the best time.

The next major challenge comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Durbridge, as imagined. Durbridge is just 1” back of Beniusis at the intermediate sprint and it should be a nailbiter to the line.

Lost in the celebrations of Durbridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Penko sets the 4th best time and should fight for a top 10 at the end of the day.

Standings Update


With the first 99 riders across the line, everyone who is more than 20” back on GC has finished their day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Durbridge is the clear standout and should be content with his chances to win the stage at this point. Beniusis and Kittel will also be happy even though they can’t get the win.

The first rider to set a competitive time from this group is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Wolf, just 1’14” back. That’s enough to put himself in the GC lead. That lead doesn’t last long though as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Campenaerts comes flying just a few folks back.

While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Campenaerts can’t set the new best time on the day, he takes a major chunk out of Wolf putting himself into the new lead. His time of 35’03 puts him in a very competitive position to hold out as the next jersey wearer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Gonzalez Salas is the next major contender and he jumps ahead of Campenaerts by just 9”. The Assa Abloy team is jumping at this result as it should really only be challenged by Paillot, his teammate! Sadly, Gonzalez Salas will face tough competition to hold onto that jersey across the hilly stages to come, but any time in a leaders’ jersey is worth celebrating.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Belevics is the next rider across the line to compete for a final top 10 placing on the day, coming in 45” back of Durbridge. It’s a great result that should also put him near the top 5 in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Christodoulos also comes in closely to secure a top 10 position, landing in 6th place at the time of finish. ‘36 back of Durbridge, but only 12” back of Gonzalez Salas. Christodoulos will feel comfortable with this, knowing he should be able to handle the hillier terrain to come much better that Gonzalez Salas. He will also be celebrating a likely lead in the youth classification as easily the best time trialist to qualify for that jersey.

The Assa Abloy teammate with the most greatest chance of taking over in the new leader’s jersey comes through the midway point “18 seconds down on Gonzalez Salas and 29” off of the best time at that checkpoint. Close behind is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Dunbar, who is only “19 down on the best time. It’s a disappointing result for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Paillot who finishes more than a minute back of Durbridge after being the 2nd favorite.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Dunbar does not appear to give up so easily and wants to set himself up for the GC win that many believe is possible. It’s a great time for one of the best climbers and puncheurs in the race as he finished “47 back of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Durbridge and 23” back of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Gonzalez Salas who maintains the GC lead. Dunbar now knows that he’ll have to attack on the remaining stages to make his way to the top of the leaderboard.

We’ve been waiting for someone to challenge Durbridge outright and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Dennis is making that attempt. Just 6” back of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Beniusis and 5” of Durbridge at the intermediate, Dennis wants to start the hilly parcours with time on everyone, especially Dunbar. The fast first half doesn’t pay off though, as Dennis falters in the 2nd half. He still manages to stay 40” back of Durbridge and enter 8th in the stage classification and take a few seconds on Dunbar.

One of the only other riders attempting a major stage overhaul is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Fernandes who comes through the half-way point at 15” back. Another rough second half crushed their time, falling all the way to 1’11” behind.

The best time trialist left on course is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Cosnefroy and he sets a time only 13” back at the intermediate. It’s a slower second half again, but Cosnefroy keeps it under a minute for a good time.

The race leader is now underway. While he isn’t the best time trialist, his “20 second gap could keep things interesting if the powers of the jersey take him to a new level. With none of the sprinters or breakaway stars from the past days competing seriously for a top result, there are no major updates. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Kalaba is the best of the sprinters who had a few seconds to spare, but still finishes 2’23” back.
