Vuelta a Espana - Stage 21
Imladrik
A final stage in Madrid will, as epr tradition, finish the 2022 Vuelta a Espana. An all flat, short stage, with only 103 km, which could still be me too long after three weeks of mountainous racings.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205150634_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb is obviously the main favorite, as except one, he won every sprint finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen should in theory be his main contenders, but at the end of a Grand Tour, there isn’t much truth anymore, is there?
Outside of the stage victory, the other main interest is the green jersey. The GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski took the lead in the point classification yesterday, and he’s 13 points clear on the German sprinter. Up to 10 points are offered in the intermediate sprint, and up to 50 in the finish.
In the meantime, Degenkolb will indeed wear the green on behalf of Dombrowski.
No mountain points today, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel has won it quite some days ago anyway.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Inkelaar, the best young rider, will only have to not be trapped in an unlikely split to keep his white jersey.

Traditionnal photo on the departure line, and here we go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205151634_1.jpg

A break of three is quickly formed with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Meiler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Sirironnachai and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205151839_1.jpg

Tinkoff, Gazelle, MOL and ISA are in control. If he doesn’t take points in the intermediate sprint, and if Dombrowski isn’t in the top 15 of the stage, Degenkolb has to finish at least 6th to retake the green jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205152041_1.jpg

The said intermediate sprint is passed without sprint by the break. The peloton is 1’30 behind, and there’s 60 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205152312_1.jpg

In the peloton, Degenkolb is at the front, with his leadout Santos.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205152405_1.jpg

Nobody contests him, and he takes 2 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205152425_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Uran takes the remaining point.

The riders now are in the circuit in Madrid, and with 40 km yet to ride, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Vangstad attacks the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205152651_1.jpg

We’re now in the last 20 km. Vangstad didn’t go far, and the gap is reduced to 36 seconds, with MOL, ISA and Tinkoff doing most of the work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205152909_1.jpg

11 km to ride now, and the braves have been caught. Not to see what will be Gazelle’s attitude. For now, the red jersey is some meters behind the sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205153016_1.jpg

4,6 km till the finish, trains are forming, with ISA on the right, MOL in the center and Tinkoff on the left.
Problem: Degenkolb is not in Santos’ wheel. Right now, he’s behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205153314_1.jpg

Dombrowski is safe inside the peloton.

2 km to go, and the 3 trains are ready:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Moricz – Petit – Walscheid
They have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Abdul Halil in their wheel.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Baska – Santos – Degenkolb
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Kanerva – Trakhov – Banaszek
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Steimle try to catch the Tinkoff train.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Sureda, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bol and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas are in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Rutsch’s wheel.
I’m not to sure about what the EA rider is doing here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205153644_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Cisse, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Trondsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Rodenberg are a bit behind.

Flamme rouge! And the trains have been disorganized.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205153704_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Santos is leading under the kite, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Walscheid, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Abdul Halil.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Banaszek is the second Tinkoff rider on the right.

800 m. Degenkolb accelerates t opass his leadout. Abdul Halil is the fastest right now. Banaszek still is leadout by Trakhov. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift is quite fast on the right.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski tries to sprint for Popo4Ever

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205153841_1.jpg

Dombrowski doesn’t seem interested in the green jersey, so Degenkolb has to finish at least 7th.

600 m. Degenkolb is leading, but he’s much, much slower than the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205154121_1.jpg

400 m. Degenkolb is finished, that seems like a disastrous last stage. Banaszek and Aniolkowski are the fastest now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205154233_1.jpg

200 m. Could this be the one for Banaszek?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205154317_1.jpg

And yes, a comfortable win for the Tinkoff rider!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205154332_1.jpg

A surprising Aniolkowski is 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205154402_1.jpg

Abdul Halil is 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205154422_1.jpg

Bol is 4th, Swift is 5th, Sureda 6th and Steimle 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S21/20230205154527_1.jpg

Petit is 8th, and Degenkolb only 9th. That’s hearbreaking, as he’ll finish 3 points short of the green jersey he wore for 20 days! Rodenberg is 10th.

No change in the main positions, the main information being that 3 sprinters climb back in the top 10 of the points classification.

Podium time! We sadly missed it, so you’ll have to imagine it. But be sure it’s fantastic.

Well, it was some nice three weeks to pass with you. I hope to see you soon.
