Second and last time-trial of the race! This one is a nearly 15 km long climb. He’ll be shaping a bit more the classifications, before the final mountain stage of the race tomorrow.
The red jersey Dombrowski is the main favorite of the day, and he’ll look to maybe seal his victory be regaining some time on his runner-up, Kudus, also runner-up on this list.
It could also be the occasion for Eastman, who won the first time-trial, to place himself well.
We stay in the same regional park that yesterday – I don’t have the patience to repeat it – to climb the Puerto de Navacerrad (cat. 1, 14,7 km, 7,1%, with an ending above 10%).
And, would you believe it? It’s snowing!
Sterbini, the second to depart, is not a climber, but he’s a fairly good time-trialist. He finishes first, in 54’52, soon followed by his teammate Nareklishvili.
Last week, Tesfom occupied the hot seat a good amount of time. He does fairly well today too – for his qualities, that is said.
With 18 riders having finished, he’s the provisional leader, only to be overcome by Rodenberg, who is the first to make the climb under the 50 minutes (49’01).
After 60 riders finished, Van Heerden is on the hot seat, with a time of 45’01. Puncheurs and medium tier climbers are on the road now.
Munoz is one of them. We’ve seen him much in the race, working at the front of the pack, without much success for his team, to be fair.
But the sensations comes from Seboka – a strong pure climber. He leads in the intermediate chrono, and with a finish of 41’19 (17 minutes faster than Lutsyshyn, who probably will be dead last again), he takes the hot seat.
His time lasts quite some time: with 116 riders done, he leads the intermediate chrono by 36’’, and the 103 having finished the race by 1’27. Really a strong time for the other Moser rider.
Stancu leads the intermediate chrono when he passes the line – 10 seconds faster than Seboka.
The last part is too hard for him though, and with 156 riders finished, Seboka still leads by a fair margin.
But the time of the really good climbers comes, and that lead will probably not stay what it is.
Sadly for Los Pollos Hermanos, Munoz continues with his bad race, as he’s 1’26 slower than Seboka.
But Godoy, Vosekalns, Williams and Bongiorno all are fastest than Stancu (who was faster than Seboka) in the first half.
And let’s not forget the young rider fight! At the first chrono, Higuita is already 12’’ slower than Sosa. Inkelaar’s not there yet.
Godoy finally finishes ahead of Bongiorno, and he takes the hot seat, with a time of 41’01. Next is all the top 20.
Sosa loses 1’30, so that’s already one place won by Godoy.
Higuita loses 22 more seconds, so he’ll be behind Sosa and Godoy in the GC.
Chiarello is the Brazilian time-trial champion, but he’s not as good a climber as his compatriot: after the first half, he’s already one minute late.
Eastman had a good first half… that is, until the two favorites pass the line.
And with everyone having done at least the first half, we already can have some expectations on what the final result will be…
Inkelaar took the white jersey yesterday. He finishes 7 seconds ahead of Sosa and 34 seconds ahead of Higuita. His jersey his safe, at least until tomorrow.
Eastman finishes in 40’52, 8 seconds ahead of Godoy. He takes the hot seat, as we wait for the three lasts. The American was 1’31 late on Yates’ podium spot, as the Brit seems to be struggling.
As we wait for his result, I don’t know where to put this photo of the battle of the favorites, so I put it here.
Yates only loses 38 seconds on Eastman, which brings the American under a minute of the last podium spot. That’ll make it an interesting battle to follow tomorrow!
Now it’s time for Kudus and Dombrowski. They are separated by 2’35 in the GC.
Kudus wins 17 seconds on Eastman. What a ride!
Dombrowski still has 300 m to climb. He seems slower…
And I don’t know whether he wasn’t or whether he won time before, but that’s another one for the red jersey! What a ride, what a champion! Third stage for him in this Vuelta.
No big change in the GC as a result of this stage: Dombrowski make his advance bigger on everyone with Kudus, who’ll probably be the only one to be able to challenge him tomorrow, and the 4th place moves away Formolo.
Latour and Chiarello did exchange positions, but they’re only separated by 1’’, so nothing sealed.
Olivier climbs back up to 11th, and might have a shot at 10th.
Godoy wins 5 places and is now 15th. Sosa also overcomes Higuita, but even with a 3 minutes lead, seeing how yesterday played out, the white jersey fight surely is not finished.
Degenkolb now only has an 18 points advantage on Dombrowski, so he’ll hope that the red jersey doesn’t win tomorrow, to let the pressure off in the last day.
Gazelle takes back 2 minutes in the team classification, but let’s be sure that it wont be their main goal tomorrow.
Last mountain stage tomorrow! I can’t wait!
