Vuelta a Espana - Stage 18
Imladrik
Mountains, mountains, mountains ! Third climbing stage (of five) in a row, and one of the few of this 2022 Vuelta a Espana to not finish uphill. Still, it won’t be easier, with 175 km to ride, and two category 1 to climb two times each.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202204947_1.jpg

No surprise that the favorites are the usual climber of the top 10 today.
The race begins and finishes in the vicinity of Madrid, around the Parque regional de la Cuenca Alta del Manzanares.

64 mountain points to take tyoday, only slightly more than the difference between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo.

There are 25 km of flat before the beginning of the Puerto de Navacerrada (cat. 1, 13 km, 6%). Plenty of time for a big break to form, and for the peloton to organize.

And it’s done after 16 km, even though the break is not that big: only 18 guys are at the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo and an unidentified ELCO rider tried to go, but they where shot down by Huski, Gazelle and Aegon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202205930_1.jpg

The braves of the day are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Papanovpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Chamorro (55th, 4 points)pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Burke (24th, 16 points)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Gavars, Blums (25th, 16 points)pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel (1st, 134 points)pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Nesset (20th, 18 points)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Carpenter (65th, 2 points)pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Beltran, Munoz (39th, 10 points)pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Inkelaar

Schinnagel is also the best placed in the GC (15th, +13’51).
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Higuita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Sosa probably don’t feel too much threatened by this break, as Inkelaar was let go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202210350_1.jpg

The gap is 4’05 at the foot of the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202210535_1.jpg

Quite the surprise, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel is distanced with 2 km left to climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202210752_1.jpg

He should be able to make it back, which is not the case of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Beltran, beside him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Cisse and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sterbini are quickly dropped from the peloton, and that it less surprising.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202210836_1.jpg

There is no real fight for the mountain points – even though Schinnagel made it back in the group, he’s far for the front. The 16 are for Inkelaar, without too much effort.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202210920_1.jpg

The gap is up to 5’48 as the peloton crosses the line, with only 157 men in it. 131 km left to ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202211209_1.jpg

There is a strong pace in the pack under the impulsion of Gazelle, Huski and Aegon: the wind is strong, and a group of 85 has been trapped. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Warchol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Williams and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Vingegaard are at the wrong side of the split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202211712_1.jpg

Aegon has better watch out: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Olivier is not far to be dropped too.

4’20 ahead, a group of 14 is approaching the Puerto de la Morcuera (cat. 1, 11 km, 5,7%).
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Foliforov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Main, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Beltran and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Geniets are between the leaders and the favorites.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Barthe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Bongiorno are distanced from the favorites’ group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel might have looked in difficulties earlier, but he’s more than able to attack and take the next 16 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202212436_1.jpg

The red jersey’s group is down to 27 men as it crosses the line, 7 minutes later. Except Bongiorno, all the top 20 is here or ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202212642_1.jpg

90 km to go for the break.

No sprint in Guadalix de la Sierra. Even those who are well placed in the GC are not interested in the bonus seconds.

Penultimate climb! It’s the Puerto de la Morcuera, but from the Eastern side, and it’s not easier: cat. 1, 9,6 km, 7,1 %.
No more chasing group between the 14 leaders and the 30 favorites, the gap is down to 3’18.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202213112_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Preidler leads a group of 8 on top of the climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Chamorro and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel are a few meters behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202213415_1.jpg

The Austrian is now 5th in the best climber competition, with 54 points.

Without many teams too keen to work, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Bongiorno’s group makes it back in the peloton in the climb. Another group of 54 is 1’40 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202213729_1.jpg

The leader’s advantage is up to 9 minutes. Not sure that Higuita and Sosa’s tactic was the good one…

45 km and one climb to go ofr the 7 leaders: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Munoz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Mamykin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Blums, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Burke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Inkelaar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Preidler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Nesset.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Chamorro is 30 seconds behind, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel’s group 1’43 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202213907_1.jpg

The break is soon back to 13: Chamorro, Phodingam, Parra Bustamente, Gavars, Schinnagel and Carpenter made it back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202214251_1.jpg

The Puerto de Cotos (the first climb, but from the other side) begins: cat. 1, 9,9 km, 5,9%.
The peloton is 6’48 behind, with Papanov in between.

And in the first slopes, there’s an attack in the peloton (well, in the favorite’s group would be a best term): pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Chiarello and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Formolo get a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202214447_1.jpg

Dombrowski tried to react, but without much success, it seems.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Schelling and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Higuita manage to ge ta small gap too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202214531_1.jpg

The favorites group are soon together again, except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Godoy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Latour is the next to attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202214739_1.jpg

In the break, Schinnagel has been dropped once again. Might he be tiring?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Inkelaar takes the 16 final points of the day. 23 km to ride for the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202214835_1.jpg

A group of 10 favorites passes the mountain sprint with a 4’33 gap: Latour, Kudus, Eastman, Yates, Schelling, Dombrowski, Cathy, Higuita, Sosa and Olivier.
Formolo is 24 seconds behind, Chiarello 45.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202215012_1.jpg

The leaders begin the descent with a gap up to 5’41, and 17 km to go. The attacks immediately begin!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202215300_1.jpg

Chiarello and Formolo made it back.

10 km to go for the break, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Preidler has a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202215510_1.jpg

In the red jersey’s group, the said red jersey is resisting all the attacks with the help of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Bernard. Chiarello has been dropped again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202215622_1.jpg

5 km to ride for Preidler.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202215724_1.jpg

He has 16 seconds on the chasing group and 6’13 on the favorites, who are looking at each other now (Chiarello made it back again.) Really a bad move for the two white jersey contenders: Inkelaar still is at the front!

2 km for the Aker rider.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202215904_1.jpg

He’s alone under the flamme rouge! (On the right of the picture, hidden by the ads colors).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202215924_1.jpg

His gap is 40 seconds. Blums tries to react, but it might be to late.

It is! Preidler takes a fantastic victory. He rode very well and attacked at the right time!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202220147_1.jpg

Now to see hom many GC places he’ll win today.

Blums sprint in 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202220221_1.jpg

Nesset is 3rd, but with nothing over Inkelaar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202220238_1.jpg

3,3 km to ride for the favorites. Yates has a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202220439_1.jpg

Under the flamme rouge, he has 13 seconds on Latour and 30 seconds on the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202220533_1.jpg

Yates is 14th and earns some seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202220551_1.jpg

Same for Latour, who’s 15th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202220621_1.jpg

Chiarello is 16th, ahead of Sosa.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202220635_1.jpg

And Quita leads everyone else home.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S18/20230202220713_1.jpg

With their victorious break, Preidler and Inkelaar climb in the top 10. Nesset wins some places to.
Higuita, Sosa, Godoy and Bongiorno are those who lose more. They are relegated at the back of the top 20.
The formers are now 3 minutes behind Inkelaar in the young rider classification.
Preidler is now 3rd in the mountain classification, but he doesn’t have half of Schinnagel’s points.
Isostar is now well in place at the top of the team classification.
This second breakaway win in a row is a good news for Degenkolb, whose chances to keep his green jersey are growing.

Mountain time-trial tomorrow! Now THAT will be interesting. We hope to see you there.
