Vuelta a Espana - Stage 15
Imladrik
And it’s a second transition stage to open the 3rd and final week of the 2022 Vuelta a Espana.
I’m very happy to greet you in Castro-Urdiales, on the Cantabrian coast, between Santander and Bilbao. The 178,4 km long stage will soon begin.

Yesterday, sprinters had a good results, as they finished 2nd, 3rd ans 6th. Today should be harder for them, as the finale is bumpier, with a quite steep finish. Still, though the bookies favor the punchers, one shouldn’t rule out guys like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen.

If the breakaway doesn’t take this one, that is.
Only 6 mountain points to take today, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel can rest his legs one more day.

As the days pass, the breakaway fights are less and less hard! We have something that resembles a break of the day after only 10km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129162303_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Burke was the first to attack. He’s followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Romo (28th, 10 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Bax (34th, 8 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Kastrantas (5th, 32 points) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Dina (32nd, 8 points).

They have 1’30 on the peloton, where Tinkoff, Project: Africa and Gazelle are working.

150 km to go, and the aforementioned five have been joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Primozic (46th, 4 points) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Geniets (59th, 2 points). Their gap is 2’46.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129162549_1.jpg

Duolingo, Huski and King Power joined the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129162643_1.jpg

We saw Los Pollos Hermanos try to go in the break, but without much success.

Nobody contests the sprint in El Astillero, in the bay of Santander, a town better known for its shipyard and its rowing team than for cycling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129162919_1.jpg

The gap is down to 2’22 with 93 km to go. It didn’t went over 3 minutes. Once again, the peloton doesn’t want to let anything to the breaks.

Next comes the climb of the day: it’s named Alto de San Cipriano (cat. 3, 4,8 km, 4,9%), well inside Cantabria.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129163206_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Dina hauls everybody uphill, only to be overcome on the line by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Romo. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Kastrantas is 3rd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Bax is dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129163328_1.jpg

The gap to the peloton is 2’09 with 56 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sterbini is the first to be dropped from the pack.

The fast pace at the front of the peloton, under the impulsion of Huski, Tinkoff and Evonik, creates splits. All should come together, but that might leave traces.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129163644_1.jpg

35 km to go. The peloton is closing in, it’s raining, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Geniets tries to go alone. He doesn’t go far, though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129163928_1.jpg

20 km left, and the catch will soon be made.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129164255_1.jpg

The peloton still is 175 men strong, but that shouldn't last long ,as it’s more and more stretched.

3 km later and it’s done. A group of 22 has a short gap around pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129164517_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Quita accelerates: indeed, Sosa is there, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Higuita is not.
Many others are missing, like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Preidler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bettiol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Kudus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates.

At the 10 km banner, 158 riders are counted as together, but in my eyes, there are holes everywhere.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129164733_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Sosa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Formolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Gebrezgabihier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Higuita are near the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov is the first to attack, 4 km from the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129164941_1.jpg

2 km later, the Russian still has a 100 meters advance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129165132_1.jpg

Behind, in the front row, we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Geniets and Godoy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Eastman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Delco and Chiarello, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Barthe and Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Formolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Higuita.

Flamme rouge! The last kilometer is all steep climbing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129165212_1.jpg

600 m and it’s all crowded together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129165327_1.jpg

From left to right:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Cerny/Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bettiol/Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Carboni/Olivier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Geniets/Godoy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Barthe/Latour.

400 m and no change.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129165357_1.jpg

200 m. Godoy has been released. Yates, Olivier and Formolo are waiting for the right moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129165428_1.jpg

100 m. That’ll be a show of strength to win this one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129165541_1.jpg

And it’s for Godoy! Great victory, thanks to a well timed release. Formolo is once again 2nd. Bettiol is 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129165633_1.jpg

Then it’s Carboni, Olivier and Dombrowski.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129165739_1.jpg

Follow Yates, Kudus, Chiarello and Latour.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S15/20230129165802_1.jpg

A gap of 17 seconds is given after the 19th rider. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Carthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Inkelaar lose time. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Preidler loses 30 seconds.

No change in any of the classification. Tomorrow, the high mountains are back, with a short stage, but a stagne with the Angliru. I don’t know how it’s for you, but I can’t wait!
