Vuelta a Espana - Stage 14
Imladrik
Welcome! The second week of the 2022 Vuelta comes to an end, before the dreadful last week, which will seal the definitive victory, or should I say, victories, as the four jerseys still are in competition.
Yesterday time-trial reshuffled a bit the cards at the top of the GC, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Eastman taking the second position, behind an unmovable pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski, who spent the whole week in red, without being too much worried by its contender, even though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates was closing on thanks to two back to back stage wins. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Formolo lost some time in the time-trial, but showed he had good legs all week long, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Kudus nearly has made up for his disastrous 7th stage.

Today shouldn’t be as eventful, the biggest difficulty being the length of the stage: 199,6 km between Lugo and Ourense. The first half is full of short, uncategoried climbs. The second half will consist of three category 3 climbs, with flat sections between them until the end. There is also a short bump in the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127224447_1.jpg

Punchers and punch sprinters are the favorites today. A few days ago, on a similar stage, Dombrowski won and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen, one of the day’s favorites, was 10th. Will the Dutch do better today, with his GC leader now very close to the red jersey?
Only 18 points to take in the best climber classification today, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel’s jersey is safe one more day.

As I said, the race begins in Lugo, in Galicia, in the northwest, not too far from yesterday’s stage. The town is mostly known for its third century roman fortifications, a part of world’s heritage.

But let’s go to racing now!

The break seems settled with 17 km done: they are 8 at the front: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Bax (33rd, 8 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Lopez (9th, 20 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Suter (40th, 6 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Primozic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns (4th, 32 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Gladysh (24th, 12 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Lastra (23rd, 12 points) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Johannessen (27th, 10 points). As you can see, mostly guys we’ve seen more than once up the road in this Vuelta!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127225913_1.jpg

Vosekalns is 19th in the GC and the “closest” to the red jersey (+11’58).
For now, the gap with the peloton is only 40 seconds, with Duolingo, Tinkoff, King Power, Gazelle, Huski, Moser, ISA and Project: Africa working.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127230131_1.jpg

There is not much action in the first half of the race, as the peloton plays cat and mouse with the breakaway. The leaders begin the Alto de Escairon (cat. 3, 9 km, 3,7%) with a 2’15 lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127230440_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Primozic was the first to accelerate, 1 km from the top, but as often, he didn’t get any points. It’s hard to tell who get 1st.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127230649_1.jpg

The judges give the 6 points to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns. Then it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Lastra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Lopez.

84 km to go, and the gap is 2’30.

No sprint in Pereira, as one could expect. The gap is now down to 2’09. In the EA duo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Johannessen is letting Bax work on his behalf.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127231006_1.jpg

The next climb is the Alto de Guitara (cat. 3, 7,4 km, 4%). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Gladysh is the one attacking, and he can resist on the top, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Primozic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Johannessen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127231141_1.jpg

With points spread like that, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel can indeed rest his legs!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Bax has been dropped in the back. He’ll be caught by the pack, from which pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sterbini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Abdul Halil and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Nareklishvili are dropped. The three Los Pollos Hermanos riders are scattered along the road for now.

55 km to go, and the gap is 1’30.

15 km later, the attacks begin in the break, but nobody is really able to go for now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127231615_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Johannessen gets a small gap at the foot of the Alto de Abeleira (cat. 3, 6,7 km, 4,4%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127231733_1.jpg

A great effort by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Chiu reels in the breakaway halfway to the top. The peloton is not generous with the breakaway in this transition stages!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127231855_1.jpg

The acceleration dropped a group of 11, with mainly guys who worked at the front all day long. With 25 km to go, the peloton is 171 men strong.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Redecker is the first pre-race favorites to be dropped, along pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Mavrikakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Uran. They could still make it back though.

No competition for the last mountain sprint of the day, but new splits appear.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127232941_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Warchol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Trondsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Lagane are dropped. There are 83 men in the pack with 20 km to go. Warchol is the only one from the top 20 that missed the split.

Three kilometers later, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Sosa attacks! The Columbian has to be aggressive to take the best young rider jersey to his compatriot pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Higuita.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127233025_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Formolo is on his tail before anyone reacts.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates goes after them, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski leads the chase.

13,5 km to go. Formolo, Yates and Sosa open the road with 12’’ on Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Eastman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Godoy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Inkelaar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127233350_1.jpg

The leaders have 24’’ on the 67 men white jersey group, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen still are.

10 km to go (don’t mind the banner, a trainee put it in the wrong place) and not much change.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127233432_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Carthy leads the chase in the white jersey group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Formolo led the break in the descent, even though he’s the worst in the exercise.

8 km to go and everyone is back together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127233654_1.jpg

6 km to go and, would you believe it, the green jersey attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127233745_1.jpg

5 km till the end. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Sosa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Inkelaar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Schelling have 13 seconds on the red jersey group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127233837_1.jpg

3,5 km to go. The leaders have been joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Chiarello, but he doesn’t wait for the pack, just 8 seconds behind, and accelerates again!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127233930_1.jpg

2 km. Chiarello has 16’’ on the chasing group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127234001_1.jpg

Flamme rouge! The gap has gone up to 24 seconds. Behind Chiarello, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bol leads the peloton, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Formolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Kudus in his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127234043_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates tries to join the fun.

600 m Chiarello. The sprinters are going for it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127234220_1.jpg

300 m. Now it’s uphill to the end. The gap is closing fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127234308_1.jpg

200 m. Degenkolb is already fading.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127234524_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Cerny is the fastest in the back, with Yates and Van Stayen.

100 m. I’m afraid they’ll be a tad too long for Chiarello. Bol is probably going to take this.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127234609_1.jpg

That’ll be a close call…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127234638_1.jpg

And it’s a win for Chiarello! It couldn’t have been any longer! Bol is 2nd, Degenkolb 3rd, with a daring day for the green jersey.

Cerny is 4th, Yates is 5th. Not a bad day for De Stijl, even though they missed on a third stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127234734_1.jpg

Van Stayen quite couldn’t live up to his status – he’s 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127234853_1.jpg

Then it’s Sosa, Trakhov, Formolo and Dombrowski, a wheel ahead of Kudus.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/s14/20230127234904_1.jpg

No gap given for the 71 first finishers, so no change in the GC. The biggest information is that Degenkolb is now 72 clear of Dombrowski for the green jersey fight. He might have a chance to take some more tomorrow.

We will meet you there.
