Hello everyone, and welcome and Muros for the one and only classical time trial of this 2022 Vuelta a Espana.
Wait. Classical, did I say? While it may seems so at first glance, there’s a nasty bump in the last of the 32,5 km of this stage, and after nearly two hard weeks, it’s hard to say that it will not affect anyone.
The favorites list shows that: with good time-trial skills, stamina and ability to climb should be necessary to have a good result here. Vlasov and Eastman have a card to play today, the latter could even take the red jersey.
In any case, it will be interesting to see what are the outcomes of today’s stage on the dynamic of the race.
We’ve moved to the extreme West of Spain today! We’re some kilometers of Santiago, on the ocean, and we finish up to the Mirador de Eezaro, with its fantstic view on the Fervenza do Ezaro, a unique waterfall and, of course, on the ocean.
Let’s go! Lutsyshyn is the first to go, but he won’t be today’s winner, of that we can be sure.
The first 155 riders are a mix of sprinters and time-trialist, who have in their legs all the hard stages of the previous days, and are probably dread at the idea of the coming week.
Sterbini was often seen at the back of the race, these days.
He’s quite a good race and finishes in 53’44. The hill really is hard on the riders.
That shows when Tesfom finishes, 2 minutes better, in 51’33.
This times keeps on being the best for quite a time, before it’s successively beaten by Kireva, and O'Loughlin, the latter taking time in the last part.
The Irish finishes in 50’59.
De Bod was the next to be better.
With a time of 50’32, he’s even better and take the lead. He can keep for some time until, as we arrived to more potent climber, it begins to change successively.
Gavars can have some hope, after having recover from a 30’ gap after the second intermediate chrono. He seats at 50’28.
Koep is then at the 50’ limit, with a time of 50’01, successively beaten by Uran, Rachid, Vlasov, Rybalkin and, finally, Vingegaard.
With 155 riders done for, let’s have a look to the standings.
Vingegaard being 20’ away from Dombrowski, these won’t change much on the GC.
The next riders are those from 37th to 24th in the GC, aka those who are more than 10 minutes down to Dombrowski.
Not one of them has a notable result. In fact, we have to wait for the GC favorites to see anything able to beat Vingegaard. But as it might have an outcome on the young rider competition, we’ll begin with Inkelaar.
He’s got a so-so time, in 51’28, but it’s still better than the 4th on the U25 competition, so he’ll probably take it.
Vosekalns comes in next, and he has a hard time, as he finishes in 53’56. He’ll lose some places…
It’s not too bad for Sosa who makes for his poor TT skills with a good climb. He finishes in 51’24, so that’s 4 seconds taken to Inkelaar in the best young rider competition. We’ll have to wait for Higuita’s turn to have news in this.
53’15 for Preidler certainly isn’t good. He’ll be going back behind Sosa and Inkelaar in the GC.
Higuita is on the road. He’s got an OK time, 51’54. But that’s half a minute lost to his competitors. He’ll keep his jersey for now, but maybe that’s a warning for the Isostar rider.
Olivier was eleventh at the beginning of the stage, with what might be considered a disappointing beginning of the race. Let’s see whether he can do better today.
50’15. Quite good actually! That’s time won on all the GC guys behind him/
Chiarello had a 0’36 advance on the Dutchman before today, and was 33’’ down to Godoy for 9th.
And what a stage! He finishes in 48’22, and takes the provisional lead. Not a surprising result, as he’s OK on the TT bike, and a quite good climber. Seems like the hill really makes a difference!
Will that be enough to progress in the rankings?
Godoy is a better climber, but the first two parts might hurt him a bit.
Ouch. 52’44. He’ll be losing positions to Chiarello and Olivier, and see Higuita close on him.
It’s better for Latour, who finishes in the same time as Munoz and Arslanov, 50’28. For now, he only loses a place to Chiarello.
Kudus has been crawling back up in the top 10 all the week. A good result today might put him back in the saddle before the last week to have a shot at victory. He begins 2’55 late on Dombrowsi and is an OK TT rider.
48’33! Very nice ride! He’s only 11 seconds down to Chiarello, and holds on the second place of the stage with 6 riders yet to finish. Before today, he was also 1’17 down to Formolo, for a place on the podium.
We don’t know whether Carthy is aware of the results of his contenders. If that is the case, it gave him strength! 50’10 is not bad for him. He’ll go behind at least Chiarello and Kudus in the GC, though.
Now let’s see how the top 5 fares! Except Schelling, they all are under a two minutes gap. But it’s the Swiss time first. And with a result of 48’55, he might take a top 10 today!
He loses a place to Kudus though, and has to hope for a bad result of one of the other to remain in the top 5 in the GC.
We said that Eastman was the favorite, and that it was his occasion to try to grab the red jersey. He’s been battling with Formolo for a place on the podium all week long.
48’18! Eastman takes the hotseat with only 3 riders to go! He’s 4 seconds better than Chiarello.
Podium guys! Formolo has had honor placings all week long, with a second place yesterday.
But ouch. 51’06. That’s not that bad, but he’ll lose positions. Eastman, Kudus, Schelling and Chiarello have better times than him in the GC…
Yates has had a very good week with two wins! He managed to stay under a minute gap with Dombrowski, even though the latter caught some time with his victory yesterday. Let’s see how the Brit fares.
50’22. He can’t keep it under the 50 minutes mark, which means he’ll lose his runner-up position to Eastman, if Dombrowski manages to stay first or second in the GC. He can stay clear of Kudus, though.
And the red jersey closes the day! He had 0’48 on Yates and 1’58 on Eastman, so if he can rider under 50’16, he’ll keep his jersey one more day.
And he does! 48’40 for Dombrowski, which means he’ll even be 4th of the day. What a ride! In a way, the American even strengthen his grip on the red jersey before the third week.
Well forget what we said about this stage being a chance for the TT specialists: stage racers indeed took all the good positions!
Dombrowski remains in red. Eastman takes 2nd, but is still 1’36 behind him. Yates manages to stay on the podium, but he lost much time. Kudus is 2’48 down. Still in the game, but he’ll need to ride aggressively in the mountains if he wants to challenge the American.
Dombrowski snatched 14 more points and is “only” 57 late on Degenkolb now.
Higuita remains in white, but he sees his two opponents close on him. That’ll be another interesting battle to follow!
Bad day for Isostar in the team competition: they’re relegated in third, 6 minutes late on Gazelle. Moser can take the second position, but are also 6’ down. Though, all is not lost as we saw earlier that this advance can shrink in a few stages.
Well. The next two days should be transition stages, and then, well. Hell awaits the riders.
Thank you for following us. We’re waiting to see what are the outcomes from today!
