Could this be a stage for the pure punchers? It’s bumpy all along, its 164 kilometers, with a hard ramp 30 km from the finish line, then more bumps and a small climb to the end.
The organization, at least, gives some chances to some rider outside of the GC contenders, even though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Formolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates are seen to cross the finish line first.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125223013_1.jpg

The race begins in Valls, in Cataluna, 78 km West of Barcelona, and 18 km North of Tarragona. The city was the seat of a battle between France and Spain, two centuries ago.

Today, the peloton only needs 10 km to settle on a break which satisfies all the teams. Ten men open the road, for now divided in two groups:
– pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Vangstad (26th, 10 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Carr (34th, 8 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Bax, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Egger (58th, 2 points) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Andersen
– pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Nareklishvili, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Ansons, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Morin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo (12th, 18 points) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Cemazar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125224018_1.jpg

The closest in the GC is Jaromillo (+26’53). Surely he’s no threat for the red jersey Dombrowski. Puma sent two riders to control the best climber fight and let Schinnagel rest a bit.
The peloton is 1’40 behind the front group.

In the peloton, UBS, Huski, De Stijl, Duolingo, Moser and Gazelle are working at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125224146_1.jpg

When the escapees regroup, their gap is 3’20.

90 km to go, and the gap is down to 2’30. Once again, there is fog on the road. That might give nightmares to some teams…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125224632_1.jpg

The pace in the peloton is very high. Beware not to be trapped!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125224839_1.jpg

The leaders will arrive at the intermediate sprint in Manresa in 10 km. While you’re here, take the time to walk in the 18th century city center! It will be more interesting that the complete absence of sprint in the designed point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125225011_1.jpg

And maybe you can avoid the rain.
The gap is down to 1’30 with 45 km to go.

Next step is the Puerto de Montserrat (cat. 2, 7,5 km, 6,6%).

As it begins, the break should soon be caught. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel is at the head of the pack, ready to attack for the points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125225208_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Egger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Andersen are quickly dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125225342_1.jpg

They made it back eventually. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Nareklishvili was caught soon after, and Andersen dropped again. 8 km to climb, the gap is 45 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125225545_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Carr wants to go alone. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo brings him back, but 1,6 km from the top, thy’re 4 to lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125225650_1.jpg

Behind them, we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Bax and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Vangstad.

At the top, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo is the strongest. Then it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Bax, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Carr and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Vangstad.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125225716_1.jpg

All the others are caught.

Some groups are dropped from the pack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Munoz continues to have a nightmarish race and is one of them. As is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Seboka.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125225941_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Ho takes the remaining points from the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Romo has also been dropped.

20 km to go. Only Bax and Jaramillo, with a 36 seconds gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125230205_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Zwiehoff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Khodayari are dropped from the pack.

A bit later, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Kanerva and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Gebrezgabihier who are dropped. The Eritrean is even at the back of his group…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125230409_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo goes alone with 18 km to go. He’s got nearly one minute on the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125230457_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Bax manages to come back some kilometers later.

10 km to go. The two leaders have 45 seconds on the peloton. Jaramillo could not drop Bax in the descent, which is logical, given their skillset.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125230710_1.jpg

5 km to go. We’re at the end of the downhill section. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125230919_1.jpg

In front, Bax dropped Jaramillo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125230955_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Chiarello is the next to go from the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125231015_1.jpg

2 km to ride. Bax has 15 seconds on Jaramillo and Trakhov. Chiarello is 17 seconds behind, and then there is a group of three riders, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Bernard leading out his leader Dombrowki. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Formolo is the only one who followed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125231230_1.jpg

Flamme rouge for Bax!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125231302_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bol still is in the pack, by the way.

800 m. Bax is spent. The others are ready to sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125231509_1.jpg

600 m. He still has a 14 seconds lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125231547_1.jpg

400 m. The Gazelle duo sprints hard, Formolo on their right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125231631_1.jpg

200 m. Dombrowski is ready to have this one in red!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125231720_1.jpg

100 m. Formolo seems ok with a 2nd place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125231758_1.jpg

And indeed, victory for the red jersey! Formolo is 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125231823_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Cerny storms in from the left and pass everybody for a place on the podium, ahead of Trakhov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125231929_1.jpg

Bernard led out his leader perfectly, and is rewarded with a 5th place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125232008_1.jpg

Bax is 6th from the break, which is great. Chiarello is 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S12/20230125232051_1.jpg

And then, the De Stijl duo of Bol and Yates, and a top 10 for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen.

Dombrowski and Formolo are given a 8 seconds gap, then the 91 next riders are on the same time.
In the GC, Dombrowki strengthen his lead, and Formolo is back in 3rd.
Schinnagel was dropped in the finale and is out of the top 20, which doesn’t see any other change.
Dombrowski is now 2nd in the points competition, 71 points behind Degenkolb. Could he take this classification too?

Tomorrow it’s time trial time! And with an uphill finish! It certainly will be interesting too see how it affects the race.
